Take it from someone who learned most of Japanese.
The main barrier is that it is very, very alien (to anyone with a Euro language background) and the different sentence structure will take some time getting used to.
When I say some time, I mean years before you can sit down and comfortably write a sentence about something without it sounding robotic or like it came out of a textbook.
In reality, the biggest problem that most you lads face is that you are native English speakers who probably never tried to truly learn a second language, so any bump in the road leads to massive discouragement.
A language is not something you "figure out" overnight or can grind through in X hours as if it were a game.
You also have to be persistent and not slack.
English is my second language and it took me a good while despite all the exposure to truly learn how to express myself with it.
