My friends and I have been playing Zero-K. It is the best Free/Libre game out there and the best RTS in the past few years. It also has shit multicore support so melting your friends crusty old Athlon CPU via terraforming is a legitimate strategy.

I just got into it and am enjoying it, but I just wish it had more character. TA and Supcom had a ton of character, but zero-k just really skimps out on the visual design, unit design, and music. The lack of factions also sucks.

I like some of the unit designs, but yeah, the visuals and music are pretty lackluster. Whenever me and my friends play we just put on a randomized playlist of old RTS music. Hopefully one day there will be a big music and graphics overhaul.

Maybe having to pay for the original software/game in order to use the open source engines? Having access to such engines is useless if you also don't have the necessary data/assets to work with. Asides from the 'piracy' side of things.

Shadows are implemented in the nightly builds now, and I think it's also had improved (marginally) pathfinding compared to vanilla for a while now. It's got distant land too but it'll tank your framerate. In fact, so will a large amount of items in a single cell, static or not. I use OpenMW every time I play the game now but it still has a ways to go before it becomes absolutely perfect.

I'd not bother. The way I play games is on a spare laptop with Windows 7 and a bunch of jailbroken game consoles. What I use for everything else is a Libreboot-compatible system that is running almost entirely FOSS. Annoying exception is requiring Intel microcode updates or it randomly crashes, but not a major one when Intel ME is totally neutered.

I'm starting to come to this conclusion as well. I modded my old Wii U and I'm waiting on an external drive enclosure so I can play the library of games I downloaded. With that, a 3DS, a Vita, and some other consoles I have yet to mod, I'm probably set for most games, with the exception of shooters.

>Aren't basically all Doom engines free software?
That was related to Descent Freespace which has source code but I think forbids non-commercial use among other things, so it's not free according to OSI or FSF definitions, and also generally incompatible with copyleft licensed code.
As far as Doom goes, that's a messy history. Doom originally got released under the Doom Source Code License (non-commercial and similar issues) but was eventually dual-licensed under GNU GPL (1999). Worse was Heretic and Hexen that started out under a similar problematic license but it didn't get dual-licensed to GPL until 2008. In between that, source ports that wanted to play all 3 games had to either use the bad licenses (ZDoom and its derivatives, only exception is GZDoom 3.0.0 onwards which purged all of the bits with problem licensing, notably FMOD) or resort to ugly design to use certain exceptions in what "linking" counts as to copyleft (Doomsday), or to not care (it's license autism after all).
Also interesting is Strife. Its source code is lost, but through painstaking reverse engineering cross-referenced to other Doom engine games a generally faithful re-creation was made, and cleared by a few key people, and so it and the re-release are actually GPL.

All I need for computing to be satisfying (not perfect or even good, just barely acceptable) is a sound system not nearly as shit as ALSA, a realtime equalizer, and getting rid of the last bits of proprietary, poettering and pajeetware in my system.
I already mostly live off of commandline software, but I can't browse the web with w3m because the internet requires shitty browsers with useless antifeatures and actual glow in the dark shit like rajeshscript so I use palemoon, and there are other GUI programs which depend on shitty frameworks and/or GTK I can't find worthy replacements for (zathura, GIMP, claws-mail, transmission.)
Nothing against GUI software in particular, it's just that 99% of it happens to be 1000x worse than commandline equivalents, which in today's world of terminal emulators and ncurses is actually a pretty impressive feat of fuck-uppery.
Overall not particularly comfy, but at least I'm glad to be above the garbage the great majority of people use, and I guess at least the bloatware I have no choice but to use runs at an acceptable speed on a gigahertz system with many gigabytes of ram.
