Xbox One SAD Edition confirmed ;_;
No disc drive and all digital
http://archive.is/8iljE
>First detailed by Brad Sams of Thurrott.com, Microsoft has been experimenting with a disc-less Xbox One S console codenamed Xbox Maverick, with a launch window thought to be around Q1 2019. According to our sources, we now know a little bit more about the timing and marketing name of this intriguing new console.
>Microsoft is reportedly set to call the disc-less Maverick console the "Xbox One S All-Digital Edition," with preorders aiming for mid-April 2019 and with general availability coming in early May 2019. It looks as though it could be near-global simultaneous launch for almost all existing Xbox markets.
>The disc-less Xbox One S would be a first for the company, offering fans the ability to ditch discs altogether and go all-in on digital game licenses. As Microsoft pushes for greater access to its game library via things like the Xbox Game Pass digital subscription and the incoming streaming service Project xCloud, dropping the disc drive from the "All-Digital Edition" should make it the cheapest Xbox console yet, although we have no word on pricing just yet or whether the console will see any design refinements beyond simply dropping the disc drive.
>In addition to the disc-less Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, we've heard Microsoft may be gearing up to announce a Fortnite Edition console with a custom Fortnite design, rather than a simple game bundle. It's unclear whether the Fortnite console would be a regular S, an X, or a disc-less version at this time, but we'll keep you posted as soon as we know more.
>As always with these sorts of rumors, take them with a pinch of salt until the official confirmation, as plans can and do change, but this is looking pretty solid right now. Losing the disc drive puts a limit on the amount of 4K content you can consume on Xbox, particularly outside of the USA where 4K digital video offerings are lacking compared to physical 4K Blu-ray discs. But going all-digital brings benefits like pre-loading of games, and instant refunds via the Microsoft Account page.
>Whether or not the discless future will extend to the rumored next-gen Xbox Anaconda and Lockhart "Scarlett" range consoles remains to be seen, but if the All-Digital Edition proves successful, it may tip Microsoft's hand.

You forget that there is a significant market that only buy digital and don't care. It's easy to forget when you only hang out around /v/, but normalfags don't mind digital copies and don't care about potentially losing them one day. Why do you think Steam is so big?
If this is cheap enough, this is actually a smart move for them, it could be a cheap consolebox for normalfags.
>>16208737
I think of it more like Flat-screens and paid online. Significant numbers of people didn't want them but had no other option when the industry shifted. If you're a normalnigger that just wants to play GTA6 and Fallout 5 (like 90% of the industry is), what the fuck are you gonna do if it goes stream-only? Just not play them? Do you think many people are going to be that principled to boycott stream-only gaming? They haven't boycotted any other bad practice. Hell, I'm sure a lot of them see streaming as a convenience (games take up so much! I won't need to buy new hard drives to play all these big games anymore! Games can look better with worse hardware, too!.. and so on.) Let's be honest, killing used games and piracy in one swoop is worth the few sales they'll lose in the eyes of these executives. And even if it isn't in practice, they'll do it anyway, like Denuvo, and they'll crash the industry with no survivors. And then Nintendo will be the only one left standing since they're a generation behind and will see what a shit idea it is.
>>16208765

Well the paid online thing was just a way for microsoft to make money for nothing, it's not like it was a real "thing" so to speak, eventually both Sony and Nintendo succumbed to it, because hey, it's literally free money.
As for the flatscreen thing, really, that was only an issue because fucking everything was designed for the limitations CRTs had and it only really had the knock on effect because of the format switch. Flats, now that they don't have as much of the issue of all visual media being designed and compressed for CRT are better.

USB 3.0 is fast enough that they could just make the system modular and leave it out in the base model, while selling a version that has a disk tray, and then creating a peripheral line (or outsourcing it) for attachable BR drives. Which, honestly, I'd kind of prefer since disk trays are always one of the first components to fail in any system and Microsoft makes it as annoying as fuck to swap out a replacement (not hard, but annoying). It'd be a great option to be able to just pop out an old drive and pop a new one in and be done. Though I don't think the casual market will take to that kind of expandability well, and it'll just tip even more assholes to buy all digital - hastening the inevitable death of physical copies.

>>16208710
Not really. Even if you have the game, with many PS4 and Xbox One games you also need patches, and on at least PS4 this requires PSN as a hard requirement. The irony is that with a jailbroken system, digital is often amazing solely because you have full ability to back it up and copy it, and the majority of console communities have good databases of games and checksums and such. There is nothing remotely as good as this for PC, which is frankly disgusting when it needs validation of good copies the most. I prefer no DRM. But even GOG copies of games don't have anything like No-Intro so it is quite possible some faglord has tampered with their "mirror" of a game. Linux package managers got this right ages ago where it doesn't matter which mirror you use because if someone's tampered (or even just suffered disk corruption) with their copy its signature check will fail and it will be rejected. Of course you still need to trust the package maintainer, and that their key hasn't been leaked or something, but it dramatically reduces the threat of people inserting malware into your system.

Though I guess if we're being fair, it's not like PC gaming is doing much better with regards to physical media. You're lucky to be able to find disc versions of anything beyond a select few games, which are either high-profile releases
(mostly Blizzard) or shovelware. And good luck finding PC gaming sections in just about any store these days.
At least the Xbone has such a poor adoption rate that this won't affect most people, but I do fear that it's only a harbinger of things to come. The era of physical media and actually owning your games may be coming to an end.

Spoilers: It's just some homebrew that bricks your console. What's even more shameful is idiots fell for it despite it being the most obvious fake ever at under a megabyte. There's also been similar fakes with MaiDumpTool which are even easier to pass because that does not validate permissions on installing games, unlike VitaShell, which will say if it needs extended or "I can fucking brick you" permissions.
Nowadays though, game copying does not need the executable to be decrypted and the only way that can be tampered with is via rePatch and I'm pretty sure games don't even have the capability to destroy the system, only homebrew can get kernel privileges. But on top of that most game copying is done directly from PSN à la freeShop.

digital games don't have their place, ever in their current form. the only ""good"" thing they have to their favor is that they allow 3rd worlders bypass their jewish middlemen who only offer Fortnite or Fifa and inflate game prices to untold levels (USD$120 physical vs USD$60 digital, with median wage of USD$500/mo). anything else with digital is a massive downside (tied to account, requires 'license verification' and internet, can't lend, trade, or resell, etc.).

Most annoyingly to me, they took over Sun Microsystems who are historically important to Unix, and in more recent-ish times had some major open source projects (OpenOffice, VirtualBox, OpenSolaris). Oracle proceeded to close all of those off. Nowadays you have community-maintained forks like LibreOffice and OpenIndiana. Also patent trolling.

I'm not gonna delve much into their asshole practices, but you should know they're notorious patent trolls and are currently trying to set a precedent for APIs (the functions that allow communication with a program or library) being covered by copyright (even if you implement them yourself them with clean-room engineering). calling that monumentally retarded is a massive understatement.
>Intel
They have always been assholes. IBM made them license x86 to second-suppliers to avoid lapses in supply and prevent a monopoly from forming. Intel did everything in their influence to minimize their agreement's effects. They reached out to AMD in 1982 and made an agreement that made them their second-source supplier. The agreement had them cross-license IP. Intel stopped giving AMD documentation after a couple years, forcing them to reverse-engineer Intel's chips to meet the agreement. Multiple lawsuits were fired from both sides, but Intel benefitted the most by dragging out the cases.
Then there's the "rebates" and "discounts" to OEMs (Dell, HP, Acer, Lenovo, etc.) in exchange for exclusivity. It got so bad in Japan (NEC, Fujitsu, Sony, Toshiba, Hitachi) the JFTC raided Intel's Jap offices. Gooks also did the same in Korea. Germans too in Germany.
Remember Itanium? It was Intel's attempt to corner the PC market. If it had caught on, 50% of PCs would be IA-64. their chips were slower than x86-64 and lacked backwards compatibility with x86 so it failed. Remember overpriced RDRAM? Also Intel's doing. And then there's that time where they threatened to do away with PCI-E slots so people would use their integrated GPUs. And don't get me started on Intel's ICC that cripples performance on non-Intel CPUs and the Intel ME crap.
If AMD are kikes, Intel are ultra giga kikes.
>IBM
You haven't heard of the forced bundling of software with hardware in the 60's, have you? Also in the late 80's IBM tried to abandon their IBM-PC platform and push the proprietary Personal System/2 to create vendor lock-in. Thank god it failed.

The "proper E3" is the actual demonstration at the convention floor. The keynote speeches aren't even at the same venue, so it doesn't really matter if Nintendo does a stream rather than a live show as long as they've got the games set up at the convention.

you do own the disc and the 1s and 0s contained within, but legally you need a 'license' (basically permission) to use them (note, I said license, not EULA which is a contract). if you don't have a license you have no right to play the game. it's just how copyshit law works. whether they can realistically stop you or not is another point entirely.

I wasn't talking about digital. what you said is true but irrelevant nonetheless.
I did some reading and it turns out that apparently you can use software without a license: using software doesn't violate any of the 5 aspects of copyright (distribution, reproduction, making derivatives, public performance, public display). however, if there's a contract (e.g. sale contracts, shrinkwrap EULAs) in the way and you reject it then results vary.
