I've noticed lately a lot of anons seem shocked that this is the case. Not even the good old case of "social justice witch hunters just trying to infest and colonise a media they previously lacked control over" stuff. Specifically the notion of "get hype" triggerwords and "watercooler gaming".
Heres how some anons seem to think the mainstream market works:

This is whats lead to the current situation. Not casuals playing games on easy mode, not even soyboy journos pretending they are offending so mama anita will grant them the pusspuss but simply because we are outnumbered 10 times over by this 'Ur-Casual' that doesn't even play that games to begin with.

Games stores themselves are weird now. I rarely go to local high streets or malls anymore because aside from Games Workshop and FLGS's theres really little reason to but i went into a GAME for the first time in like 6 years over the weekend and boy did it look grim.
Back in my college days it seemed bad when the shop was 1/3rd ps3/4, 1/3rd divided between xbox 360 and wii U and the rest was all amiibos, skylanders and disney infinity.
Now the plastic dlc memes dead? lotta empty shelves with a few shirts or backs of magic cards, a redbull freezer, a turned off xbone display case covered in dust and stacks of copies of crackdown 3, anthem and fallout 76. The majority of the store was "gamer gear" like cheap light up keyboards, headphones and 'mice tuned for streaming' i shit you not.
HMV was in a better state and that just got saved from bankruptcy. Again. I dont know how it is in murrca but folks i know in europe say game stores are like flea markets with just stacks of games thrown out like every shelf is a bargain bin. The fact that across the western world most seem to be starting to push a 'we can't accept anymore preowned copies of X' for AAA releases is an interesting one. I heard its because they have to pay to send them back for destruction by the publisher but who knows.

GS selling pokemon plushies and Mario memorabilia and Overwatch Nendos is fine since they're game related, but them focusing more on random other geek stuff as Gamestop exclusive rather than game exclusives is as sign that games aren't important to them now. I'm a casual as fuck gamer. I don't watch polaris or whatever the fuck that is. I stop in at the mall on a Friday after work because I need to pretend I have some social interaction so I don't kill myself. I walk around eventually end up in the gamestop. I grab the first box that has interesting artwork buy it. Then I drive to the liquor store, get a bottle of bourbon, and drive home. Then I throw the game in, the console(I have several) play for twenty minutes until I realize I hate it, then put it back in the box. Then I drink and play touhou/some MMO/shitpost the internet until I pass out. Hopefully I pass out before the suicidal ideation starts to overwhelm my better judgement. I'll end up giving the game to the kid next door or my nephew and let them handle that turd.

It's estimated that Steam's userbase has around 95% of people who constantly buy games, but never even have LAUNCHED the fucking thing. Let me begin again, my state of mind right now is neutral, I'm not attacking you. Never did I say that for you to enjoy a video game or any other hobby for that matter, you'd have to be autistic or sit in a dark room. I'm far from that, I go to the gym, maintain a good diet, I work my ass off, so sitting in a dark room is no option for me, I'm saying this not to brag, but to give you context. A certain intrinsic value or a love for that hobby, if it just so happen that you socialize or not, is another matter. Problem is there used to be a time where "AA" titles were a thing. As in, titles from otherwise barely known or very regional developers that would go on to be sleeper hits and cult classics. Nowadays, only Indies can do that but most of them are just shallow ripoffs. There's very few games out there in the market that are either original in their gameplay, respectfully copying older games to fill in a gap or with an interesting enough premise. Other than that, there's barely any that covers at least two of the criteria I've stated.
Popular games now are those that have a shelf life. Fortnite will die, just like Overcuck and all the others, because it relies on central servers/online only experiences/no private matchmaking/scarcity of modding if it's not in-house/no replayability/you name it.
