PS3 has some PS1 and PS2 incompatibilities, and even if you go that route, unless it's a 20/60gb fat (which has an actual PS2 chip), you'd just be stuck with COBRA in it for playing PS2 games.

Do you have a way to play DS games on the 3DS? If not, then get that because the DS library is much better than the 3DS. Vita does have some nice games too like Worms or Virtua Tennis 4, but doesn't come close to OG DS.

Original Xbox I guess? Dreamcast? I don't know, it seems like you have a good selection right now. How is Switch modding by the way? Can you play any switch game, and are they easy to find?

Yeah, there's a way. But some games are a bit iffy on it without a flashcart. But most games I want to play work fine.

Yeah I've been thinking about this but with the only game I really care about (Halo) being on PC it'd probably not be worth it until I see what it can do.

I've thought about it, but most retro consoles I get from CeX, and they don't sell the Dreamcast so I'd have to try my luck with Ebay. Plus I don't really have much interest in the exclusives, aside from the Sonic Adventure games (but even then I don't like them all that much and have them on other platforms) and that one Japanese only Godzilla game that was pretty good.

Pretty good right now, some fucking madman has gotten Windows 10 on the thing and Android is also being worked on it. Pirating Switch games are pretty easy. There's tons of resources and guides on where to obtain em if you look and yes it is every Switch game.

Does the Switch cover PSP and PS1 emulation? That's pretty much the only other reason to get the Vita if it's exclusive don't interest you.

There's also the fact that emulation on the PS3 (Even PS1 emulation) has frame rate lag, which makes half the games unplayable, and the rest a chore after half an hour.

Honestly, OP, just get a PS2 if you want to play PS2 games. And, you're going to have to mod it anyway (Unless you buy an imported model) since a large chunk of the good games are Japanese. Or, you could buy a PS4 and inject PS2 games, but I haven't heard anything about the overall comparability of it.

PS1 yes, with a bit of an overclock and on a per game basis it works. PSP not really, it's being worked on I believe but for now it's pretty iffy.

Honestly, that was my original plan. I'm too inexperienced to solder so my plan was to sell my slim PS2, get a fat one and all the shit required to hack it (HDD all that stuff) and then play the PS2 games. But I was thinking it'd be more cost effective to get a PS3 as that could play both.

If you can get a first gen switch second hand then it can be hacked it no sweat. I believe the newer models are harder to crack, but possible. It's a pretty cozy device to play GBA games on in bed, I just wish there was a better comic reader application.

I am really tempted to do this. Especially since I'm going on a trip this summer that will involve long plane rides and drives. I do have a modded PSP and 3DS both full of games and emulators, but they're getting kind of old. Still not sure if there are enough Switch exclusives I care about though.

Yeah, stay away from the gen 1 PS3, literally the only way to even potentially salvage that shit (which has, I cannot warn you enough, a ridiclously high failure rate) is to open that baby up and reapply some thermal paste. It's not super hard but if you find soldering currently unnatractive I imagine you'll feel the same about the paste process.

No, the PSN's (or PS3 era ones, anyhow) PS2 games use an internal emulator bundled with the game with specifics tweaked for that specific game. Only the 20 and 60gb have proper hardware based backwards compatibility. The 80gb had a generic software emulation based backwards compatibility, which in turn makes a lot of games run that way run buggy, assuming the run at all. As to the PSN games, at least PS1, those are specifically eboot formatted games, which the PS3, PSP, and Vita all recognize. They're not the original ISO/bin and cue formatted files.

Fat PS3s also have an issue with longevity, being that the thermal paste Sony used in those models is shit tier, and combined with the higher run temperatures, can melt the glue onto the actual board. Though, I've heard that the paste can be replaced with better quality stuff.

I'd assume the better thing to do would to get a slim? Issue is I can't get to the store myself. It's in another town which requires a car ride to get there. I'd have to really try to fabricate a story in case it's the wrong serial number that can't be hacked with anything else other than HAN Toolbox which is pretty limited from my experience of it way back when I had a PS3.

Slims have longer longevity and can be CFWed, but they don't have the hardware backwards compatibility with PS2. All PS3s can at least play PS1 games, even from disc, though as mentioned above, the system can have some issues just running them at-par.

Yep, it's ten bucks or so for like 99% of the PS2 library loadable from your computer via LAN cable, the only exceptions I've seen that don't work right are Darkstalkers Collection, Ridge Racer V, and Gran Turismo 4.

Yeah, I highly recommend a hard drive. Heard good things about the hacked up SATA versions of the network adapter, but I've just got a PATA setup, myself. Games load fast, but I'm sorta' burned out, so I haven't powered my PS2 up since months before TheISOZone shut down.

PS2 arguably has the better library. I've got both a CFWed PS3 and softmodded PS2 to cover both generations, and between the PS3 and a CFWed PSP, that covers most of the PS1 as well.

PS2, Xbox, PS3, PSP, PS1, Saturn are all a blast to get back ups running on. Xbox is probably the best and most streamlined once it's all set up and running, PS3 is great but using it for PS2 produces poor results, PS2 is awesome but does require a bit of configuration, some things just don't work unfortunately but it's great overall, sometimes a little buggy. PS1 and Saturn are trivial and you're running burned games in 10 minutes. PSP is obligatory for anyone doing modding.

Better value isn't going to mean that much if it's going to give out easier and/or sooner. Though I say that as someone that bought a refurbished fat PS2, so any issues it was having between manufacture and then were probably fixed up or parts replaced.

it's also relatively simple to download most of the games you want for it due to NoPayStation

I've had a modded nu2DS XL for quite awhile now. Battery has never really been an issue unless your play for hours on end on high brightness, just turn down the brightness and you should be fine.
