>>Tank controls - do you miss them?
I do, but tank controls with pre-set camera angles is the way to go and I miss the art direction that went with hiding stuff off camera. Been playing the classic RE games the past week and I actually appreciate how REmake does a marginally better job creating atmosphere through the camera work and effect.
>>Music - how do you do it right without the usual violin scream chords or low ambient buzz?
Make more organic ambient music like forest sounds or do something like Baroque and use factory music. That game also has your character's heartrate as an audio track so you can hear it grow in intensity as you take damage. That's a nice little effect to raise tension.

>And what happened to Routine anyway?
Now that is a real mystery. I like to imagine that the developers spooked themselves with their own game so hard that they just the files related to it in a storage drive in a dark room.
To be frank it's been a while since I've played any horror games. Closest thing would be Call of Chernobyl a few months back. Traversing the Zone at night to meet a deadline on a mission is pretty nervewracking, especially when you have middling gear. If it's not the mutants, it's the bandits. If it's not the bandits, it's the anomalies. If it's not the anomalies it's a Blowout, and that just increases the chances of running into the above as everyone and everything scrambles for cover.
I should download it again.

Can we talk about this game and how it's both a great horror experience and one-ups Friday the 13th and Dead by Daylight in one swoop?
>Atmosphere encourage being on edge instead of just slight mystique
>All the characters have unique stats that affect their play styles, and can be further augmented with items and skins
>Actually scary when the monster is spotted due to the sanity effect, also included on idols from the creature
>Feels like you're in a movie
>Monster makes no noises outside of being affected by light, so constantly on alert
>Different maps host different stories for how the creatures got there in the first place via tape objectives
>Basically everything outside of five characters and some extra items is unlocked via gameplay.
I convinced a group of my IRL friends to buy it and they've all described it as Dead by Daylight but better (they suck that game's dick hard.)

Alien isolation, trying to get 100% of the ID tags. Doing this showcases the flaws in the game, such as broken spawn-ins from both the alien and random foes when you backtrack.
<Tank controls - do you miss them?
I feel that slight restriction of movement enhances a horror game. Not bad controls or broken controls, but a firm dedication to what you're doing that leaves you vulnerable, such as cutting open a door or hacking a console yet the monster can still grab you.
<Dead Space, STASIS - where are all the good sci-fi horror games in abandoned space stations. And what happened to Routine anyway?
Dunno. Seems like a pretty simple thing to do and would allow the monster/alien to look like basically anything..
<Music - how do you do it right without the usual violin scream chords or low ambient buzz?
Silence is a very good way to go about it, but you can also go with unusual instruments. The most horrifying soundtrack to any movie I've heard is Planet of Dinosaurs or it's very unusual sound.

First with the radiation storm which makes your ships practically blind. Some cool visual and eerie ambient sound effects associated. Very quiet until you almost run into someone and shit hits the fan.
Other is fighting tyranids. They don't have a detection signal (or they just like to hide it, I don't yet quite know how they work) and they like to get close and eat your dudes. I have three 2400 strength nid invasions coming in my Imperial campaign and I don't look forward to fighting them.

I think it's because you literally can't escape, in a lot of horror games there's the hope that when you leave the Haunted Mansion/Racoon City/Silent Hill, you're safe. All you have in Dead Space is empty, silent dead space . Same goes for horror games that take place in the deep sea.
>Music - how do you do it right without the usual violin scream chords or low ambient buzz?
I honestly don't think that a horror game needs music, ambient sounds are enough. Subnautica has very little music but it's still the only I've ever played that REALLY scared me.

>Flashlight has a small radius, making dark areas feel claustrophobic
>Some enemies placed in such ways they're effectively jumpscares when you zip past a corner to be met with a chainsaw sound or a ghoul saying EEEYES
>Sections where you seemingly get trapped deep underground

I mean, it's not scary per se, but it clearly takes notes from the mechanics of the horror genre.

>Anon wants a train game kinda like the car-based game
>But really wants the train game to be exactly just the car-based game
I mean come on, there's no bloody difference at all, you just swapped town with train station. Instead of your move/stop non-idea that actually has already been done, and at bloody length at that (Death Road to Canada/The consuming shadow/Dead end road, shit, even The Last Stand 2 has the same basic flow.), use the primary feature of a train, which is its length and different cars.
You are stuck in a train that will not stop, and you can't access the driver's cabin. An esoteric lock is in the way. You have to search the cars, but a slow, unkillable and unpassable entity will occasionally spawn and start chasing you constantly. It announces its presence with eerie sounds before spawning. You cannot pass through it, but you can slow it down with firearms, and more importantly, you can go to the roof of the train to bypass it. However, this is risky since the outside is a burning hellscape and flying, killable enemies will attack you. You can get rid of the chaser entity by detaching cars, however other cars will spawn on the train, more corrupted looking than the others, possibly hosting killable enemies, but also new supplies and pieces of the puzzle.

So, why is multitrack drifting impossible? Why not just get the train up to speed and at a intersection decouple cars in one direction and the engine in the other to force a drift? Get technical.
e3f994 No.16222434
>>16222235
>So, why is multitrack drifting impossible?
Several reasons.
One, railroads are chock full of safeguards to eliminate the very possibility of human error, and decoupling a train at an intersection at full speed is exhibit A in the things said safeguards are designed to prevent. Specifically, there are detectors on the rails that check for the presence of a train, and they block the lever controlling an intersection if there is one over it. That's because multi-track drifting, while a fun mental image, is actually a horrific, destructive accident in real life. You better hope it happens to a freight train, because if it's a passenger train, hundreds are going to die.
Two, it's making the usual error of thinking that trains work kinda like a heavier car on a set track. Let there be no misunderstanding about this : train drivers basically just accelerate and brake. Their job is to read the signs and obey, and choice isn't in their vocabulary. It's so basic and simple that some subway lines around the world have successfully and safely been automated. The ones who actually control the trains are the guys in the turnout station. They have a live map of their section of the railroad and control everything, within the safeguards mentioned above. If anyone is going to fuck up and engage in multi-track drifting, it's not the driver. It's the guy in the turnout station, well away from the train. The driver is just going to scream and die confused.
Three, multi-track drifting requires a set of parallel rails. Those are only found in train stations, and enforce a slow speed through a device that forces a train to brake if they go too fast over it. Intersections that don't have those, in the open field, lead to completely different directions and don't stay parallel. So if you were to somehow achieve multi-track drifting at a satisfying speed, your train would just be dismantled in seconds.

I think a train on the scale of the one from Snowpiercer would better facilitate train horror. Give more dimensions to travel in rather than a narrow train car. At least if you want to give the player more options for moving around and encounters, a regular train could make for a nice adventure game setup.

We need to be looking back to /x/ for game ideas. They did some worldbuilding years back called The Train. The entire world is an endless black void (dead, barren foliage and extremely rare train stations) and all life exists on a single train. It's a massive scale one (25' wide and two story cars) where different cars are different "tribes". They have different characteristics and some were entirely non-euclidean or full of mechanized horrors. Oh! I've just remembered that there were robotic conductors and stewardesses who would provide riders with food/tools/etc. But you better damn well have your ticket in your inventory when they ask for it, otherwise you're cast into the void.
The train goes through tunnels so you can't build on top or the sides, but each car ranges from opulent to Eastern European in style. Oh, the train is also infinite (or near infinite), so euphemisms like "reaching the engine" and "heading for the caboose" existed in the mythology.

Then of course there's Night Shift, the game that takes place in a gas station in the middle of nowhere in which random horror things happen. You have to survive the night, cater to the customers (and the customers), and fulfill your job's duties like restocking the shelves. That could easily be done as a video game.
You Are Here was a game about a procedurally generated abandoned mall. It was on a terraformed planetoid, and the goal was to repair your ship and get off before the horrors of the mall got you. It was titled after the main feature of big mall maps.

Plus, getting your arm taken out of the hull for 30 seconds to be completely frozen solid by the hellish cold is better than just "to the void with you, byyye". No environment at all is no good.

Say its plot doesn't work, its characters don't click, its monsters are ridiculous, or it's not scary. Cameos are an objectively petty reason to dislike a movie. Kill yourself if you want to defend that.

NZ is already confirmed blocking the site, expect more to follow. Once people are required to jump through hoops to post here the quality will go up as the teenage edgemasters and journos will be too retarded to figure it out. Shilling problems remain the same as ever, report, ignore, move on. We all know what we stand for. The only loser in this is Mark, which is a massive win for /v/.

So I have heard about the existence of Coin Game which is not a horror game ironically and seeing the game made me think. Are there any actual horror games that are basicaly completely normal games with a normal premise that have horror elements if you decide to dig deeper? For example a game that works perfectly as some kind of shooting game, but the moment that you walk away from the location where the main game is at you are going to start fidning weird shit?

>why should you be scared
Because this shit garners alot of media attention and someone autistic enough will glorify this faggot and go off and commit another mass shooting for his own political/religious ideals. Who knows those ideals may make your local supermarket the target and God help you if you choose the wrong day to go. In the end their ideals are just an excuse to kill off a bunch of people without those people firing back, it's why they choose places that have a high unlikelihood of someone being armed.

Closest thing I can think of to this is something like Spec Ops the Line, but that isn't something hidden so much as shoved in your face in the second half. I've heard Eternal Darkness only truly ramps up to horrifying if you let the sanity go and kill a monk or something
