FPS requires much more engagement than just "pointing and clicking," as some pretentious faggots say without realizing that that description fits pretty much any strategy game which they immediately mention as a more brainy genre. Not only does it demand your spatial skills and eye-hand coordination, but also reflexes, keeping track of resources (ammo, health, etc.) all while thinking on the move as it's real-time gameplay, unlike, say, a turn-based game where you have all the time in the world to make your move. It is thus more engaging to a lot of people.
It's not a bad genre, it's just one of the biggest victims of modern mainstream bullshit, which is rotting videogames as a whole from inside out.

Anyway, the reason this genre is popular is mostly because it's popular. People are sheep, so they like to play what everyone else is playing because for literally anyone playing a multiplayer game, the point is to socialize, to have fun with friends. They don't even have to be GOOD at the game to enjoy themselves, and most of the time they aren't. Most of the people playing Fortnite, for example, have never won a game and probably never will because they are unwilling or unable to put in the thousands of hours necessary to become among the best in the game. Every lobby there is going to be at least a few people who have a hundred times more game experience (and thus skill) then they do, and will kill them effortlessly. But they don't care because they play with friends on a team and when you're with friends (apparently…) even doing inane shit like drinking beer and throwing around ping-pong balls becomes "fun".
Of course, the aspect with battle royale or any kind of lobby-based play is its quick turnaround. Even if you lose the game, in less than a minute you can be starting a new game and in a few minutes in that game grab the shit just lying on the ground and you're good to go. Imagine Minecraft if there were villages everywhere filled with chests that had diamond tools and gear in it; inside thirty seconds you'd be kitted up and ready to go fight the dragon, and even if you fall in lava and lose all your stuff, you can get it back again without difficulty. It's like that. It completely removes the initial "grind" of singleplayer games by just giving you stuff right away, so there's no "downtime" that slows the player down and makes them think maybe they want to quit. Every loss rolls right into another chance to win, like pulling the lever of a slot machine. That's how people can play this shit for ten hours nonstop; it's purposefully designed to be addictive.

FPS are one of the best platforms to do things with, the same was 2d platformers were in the past. They can fit any style, tell any story and make any world come to life. It's a natural fit for the control devices we use to play games and can allow for whatever depth you like. Tacticool to party game all work when your basic controls are look, shoot move. The same way space invaders is just move and shoot while using cover, FPS games take that to the next step.
Platformers will never die, racing games will never die and FPS will never die. They're the foundation to build up from. You will see FPS platformers (third person shooters) or other Hybrids (GTA is shooting plus racing). But they're a foundation not an end game. The current group suck, can't do much about it but wait for trends to change and something good to happen to the genre. Which it will sooner or later. Probably won't be from Triple A devs, but FPS as a foundation can be done well by indie devs too. And it will only take 1 indie hit to change mainstream genres. Same way minecraft made Day Z made Battle Royals or Amnesia made walking sims made RE7 made RE2.
