I just saw a news aggregate site mention a new Overwatch hero. Not a leak but a Blizzard announcement of a named hero with its specs coming to the game.
Now i don't really care about Overwatch, its the Mario Party of shooters being run into the ground as the latest sacrifice for Blizzards unquenchable thirst for an esports hit.
Whats interesting though is that outside this one article i had not even heard a peep about this. Not like second hand in passing, or some 'X like this' on twitter. Nobody is talking about it at all.
So did the mainstream give up on the game? considering Blizzards in a pretty shitty spot right now and it was their last big money maker thats karma well earned, but still kind of surprising given how obsessed people were with the characters when the game came out 2 or 3 years ago.

OW came at a time where there werent much new good multiplayer online FPS games around, people were hopeful and charmed by the characters, art and story of Overwatch's CG movies and fun interesting looking characters. Gameplay was fun too and brought a unique hero shooter taste to the multiplayer FPS shooting genre.
However it's been 3 years since it came out, since then they've barely put out a few heroes a year, barely expanded the story and characters, barely any new maps and all the events are complete rehashes of each other with skins being the only continuous new update they keep doing. Also the fact that Blizzard balancing ruined a lot of fun heroes, turning the game into from a casual fun game with abilities into an esports ruined the game's balanced and forced teams to play to a certain meta if they wanted to win. For most people they just dont give a shit to do it. Overwatch is dying because it's stale and offers nothing new while new fun competitors are coming out and bringing in new styles of gameplay for the FPS genre.

Because, believe it or not: it was fun.
It was not the best shooter out there, not by a long shot. But it was fun in the same vein that Heroes of the Storm and Hearthstone were fun: simple (shallow) games with little thinking involved, where you could have funny random shit happen every couple of minutes.
I played all these three, and my first impressions were:

>HotS: a moba with no laning phase, just contant team-fights and a massive clusterfuck of fun and confusion? Shit, I'm down!

These are not the sort of game you start playing and suddendly it's 4 am and you don't know where time went. It's the sort of game you play when you get home from work, log in, bash/shoot/discard some heads in for a couple of hours and then go make dinner. When the weekend rolls around, you'll play them if you got friends together, otherwise you fallback to your 300-games-library and pick something that's actually good for more than 2 hours since you're going to waste an entire afternoon on vydia, might aswell be that RPG you've sunk 40 hours in and are still half-war, or start a new 4X match.
That's the niche these games filled, and they were absolutely perfect for that. And trust me, there's a LARGE enough market for this sort of thing, enough that I'm reluctant to call it a niche any more.
But then, e-sports faggotry happens. You can't play OW 3 hours a week now, or you get destroyed by the meta that changes every 2 weeks, you gotta devote a minimum of 20 hours per week, or people start rolling over you. And those awesome-looking unbalanced superpowers you had? Nerfed, controlled and contained. Because it has to be fair for everyone. And competitive.
All 3 games abandoned this small, casual market for the e-sports meme, and all they ended up doing was losing the original players and failling to entice new one's, precisely because they wanted to bring BOTH groups into it.
I'm not even sure where companies got this idea that e-sports shit is good for business. Professional Gamers that do this shit for a living aren't that many. I mean, there's a couple million around the world... that's it. They won't sustain a AAA game with the massively inflated budgets they have nowadays. Even if they succeed, even if every pro-gamer decides to try their hands at it... the casuals won't buy. They'll watch twitch streams, youtube videos, cheer from the balcony and when the "Pros" stop earning money from tournaments and ditch it for another game (Apex Legends), the casuals will follow suit.
These were very simple, comfortable and goofy games that enjoyed precisely because they were simple, comfortable and goofy.
They fucked everything I liked about them, and now pay the price. Fuck'em.

Take it as anecdotal evidence.
A guy that used to be my friend and I talked with about vidya initially shat on all these games. Casual shit, too easy, it's for kids (because of the graphics).
He NEVER wanted to play with my group, because LoL was "better".
Then e-sports faggotry start reigning in HS.
Suddendly he had an interest. He had to drop 150€ in cards, he had to tell everyone how and why our decks were shit, and won consistently until he was 300€ bucks in, realizing that the game was now "RNG fucks you if you don't pay"-simulator.
Then HotS had it's share of e-sports.
Heroes aren't whacky and interesting, they're copypasted from lol with the same 4 ability kit:

That's when he had an interest in the game, because shit was now fun and not random, now it was great, now he wanted to make a pro-team and advance. And only after Overwatch had several major re-works done it, when the new heroes endedup being more generic trash, when the game modes were standardized did he get in.
I think we only let him scream about meta for a couple of days, but to be honest with you, at that point it didn't matter if it was him or some other player, half the player base screams (spams chat if they're BR's with no money for mics).
Everyone wanted to be Grandmaster or wathever the top rank is, everyone wants a big ELO. They cared more about the ELO than actually winning the current match. Which is fucking retarded, but that's where most of the screaming came from. Every player I met on OW that ended up being a faggot was always a fucking idiot that wanted his 4000 ELO rating so he could start his twitch channel and be famous. These were the people with 3000 posts on OW forums, these are the people spamming Kaplan's twitter with complaints.
Do you understand now? These massive fucking faggots actively shaped the game. It's no wonder it ended up being a pile of faggotry, piss and AIDS.
The silent majority doesn't care enough to visit the forums and post. People like me just booted them up, had their fun for a couple of hours and went on to do something else. It was fun, we didn't care about it beyond that as long as it remained fun.
Would things be diferent if this silent majority joined the forums and told the faggots to shut the fuck up? Maybe. But then again, I have a huge, HUGE library of good games to begin with. As far as I care, Blizzard gave me about 2 years of fun times with overwatch, and that's what I will remember about it as I go to other games now. I'll simply wait for their next title, enjoy it for a couple of years aswell while it's good, and then grab the popcorn as it once again descends into being a shit game that appeals to no-one besides Bobby Kotick's greed.

It's like a massive marketing campaign at a tenth of the price. Heck, that's LoL had going for it.
But the end result is that you end up with a lot of SPECTATORS, not PLAYERS. Sure, you get a increase in sales, a lot of people want to try their hand at the competitive angle too, and some just find the game interesting. Football is a massive spectator sport, but it still has plenty of amateurs wanting to play it with friends or other random amateurs.
But Football for instance, makes most of it's money from advertising. Ticket and merchandise sales are a good chunk of their income, but not vital.
Vidya would be like Football, but there's no advertising, tickets are the base price of a game (plus DLC) and merchandise is, well, merchandise.
The lack of advertising means your budget is actually much smaller, the sale of merchandise is negligible (unless you're Disney) and sale of tickets has to factor in the extreme competition, not only from the thousands of other games out there, but also from the f2p games that effectively undercut your sale with a 0€ "ticket".
E-sports can only work for AA or even smaller titles.
AAA games simply aren't viable for e-sports, and I'd like companies to understand it as soon as possible.

Overwatch is slipping, or has slipped, in mindshare and player base because it became TOO saturated. Blizzard put all its force behind it and then blew its load too early. Arguably most of the problem lies with how many new characters they stuffed into the game in such a short time while making other characters redundant, and how that shifted the meta in competitive play as well. This honestly started around the inclusion of Orisa, which not only was badly done because Orisa basically occupied a role of a shield tank that Reinhart had, but also because everybody was expecting Doomfist. They're pushing 30 characters, so far, with plenty of them having too much similarity to other characters and with plenty of them not having enough in their kit to actually be useful in most competitive game modes. And all the newer characters are presented with way too many gimmicky abilities and features that don't make them fit very well. Not to mention map design is rather poor, the game modes are relatively basic, you have awful netcode issues, competitive tiering and matchmaking is garbage, etc.
Blizzard was desperate to push Overwatch as it was the only thing letting them be relevant, and it did work for a couple of years until people just got over-saturated with it. Will it come back? Probably not. Blizzard would probably rather make an Overwatch 2 for next generation consoles + the Switch than keep working on the current iteration, especially if said consoles have a large install base.

I don't know what the devs think would happen. I mean they want to be "esports" so bad but haven't done any of the necessary stuff to get there and also failed at implementing it well for casual/pub players. 95% of the discussion around this game isn't about stats/players/matches/leagues/teams and history like in every other normal (e)sport but about gay fag shit, gay fag characters, gay fag "stories" or gay fag porn. This will never be a serious fps title and the fps community hasn't accepted it. It's (fading) popularity can only be upheld by becoming even more gay, since that is the only thing it wants to be known for.
It's basically a gay fag simulator and a gay fag idea of what an fps should be.
