Toby had other guys help him with undertale.

There are an large amount of singleplayer and multiplayer shooters being made, many different indie developers making platformers and metroidvanias, yet there are barely any rts games being developed in recent times, even the best stealth games could be improved tenfold with a stronger level design and more intelligent enemy, there are themes barely explored take the journey to the west aesthetic, only few games explore this or games about conspiracies or right-winged political themed games.

there's nothing wrong with making a clone and adding features like the ability to host your own server, larger player limit

Barely. Some other people came up with a few character designs, but that doesn't mean he couldn't have done it himself given a bit more time.

The thing is, most people can probably eventually learn everything they need to in order to create a complete game. They can learn to code, learn to draw/design characters and levels, learn to compose music, learn to write the storyline, learn how to advertise, etc. but it's going to take a fuckload of time. If you want to become a master of all of those aspects of game design, and each of them takes a few years, then it's going to be decades before you can actually make the game. And that's not even counting the insane amount of time it will take to DO all those things. People don't make games on their own because making a game is an affair of tens of thousands of man-hours. You can either split that up among a group and take a couple years, or you can do it yourself and be like Dwarf Fortress where it will literally never be finished. Your choice.

Dwarf Fortress? A game that sets out to simulate worlds with Toady's ambition being to tackle atomic particles one day? A game that increases the deph and complexity each update? You fucked m8? Even Nethack, similar to Dwarf Fortress development but with an actual team working on it, took 14 god damned years to be feature complete and it is still being worked on to keep it compatible and up to date.

You follow KISS , avoid the pitfalls of feature create or updating older graphics because your art skills improve mid-development, and you're not going to take forever.

A lot of updates just add inane shit or balance existing shit without doing anything like fixing the broken UI or broken tantrum spirals or the completely retarded drafting system or anything else. Because it's mostly based on procedural generation it NEVER had depth and any complexity is an illusion. Clutter is not complexity. A bunch of words thrown onto a page with some extremely basic rules governing how it forms together does not a novel make. At this point he's just continuing to pin additional gold rings onto a pig because it's never going to be whatever delusions he wants it to be.

That's way too long. You take that long and even the genre of the game you're making may be completely out of vogue. All the technology will have advanced beyond what you're doing to the point where better software and engines will likely be available. You are so far out of the loop, it's obvious you're talking out of your ass. Tantrum spirals have been fixed for nearly a decade which is why some people are complaining it's boring now. The only spirals that happen now is the new(ish) loyalty cascades. All complexity in Dwarf Fortress is the pathfinding, especially for the working water physics, constant checks for wear of objects, civ interaction with other civs, working physics with Mine carts and setting up power for those minecarts, etc. if you're a coder you'd know doing something with millions of objects interacting like that is going to be complex and take time.

Nethack has even less complex physics then Dwarf Fortress and all the time developing it comes from constantly adding new features, adding new interactions with current mechanics. The detail is so meticulous that even with a team it's taken them over a decade.
