Spooky it is not, but it's inoffensive as far as gameplay goes. It's pretty much just porn for writers though, so you pretty much have to write at least a few short stories to enjoy it fully.

Light mechanics were great, shooting and most of the puzzles weren't, it's a pretty damn shame they limited themselves to adhering to the episodic bullshit for Xbox Arcade and this was Remedy trying to be more like the movies and television, their fucking downfall when they were trying so fucking hard. Great music though.

Actually just played and beat this last week. Was pretty fun. Not groundbreaking but for the most part solid all around. Light mechanics are really good. Just minor issues with some platforming. To me there wasn't really much horror. Had some elements but more psychological thriller than horror.

It captures the atmosphere of the PNW nearly perfectly.
There's the rolling hills and farms of Eastern Washington, the ferries and shores of the coast and rivers, and the thick forests west of the cascades.
There were times in game that I could go outside irl and hear the exact same shit.
It was completely average otherwise. Worth the play.

It's an okay game, it starts up pretty interesting but the overall story is confusing and badly told. The combat is a little bit irritating and repetitive. I actually enjoyed Alan wake's American Nightmare way more and wish they had kept putting those out like episodes as they originally planned. The combat felt better and more flushed out and the storyline was simplified but still interesting.

> Twin Peaks the game.
I think that title should fall to Deadly Premonition, even with all of its problems I think Deadly Premonition pulled off the weird spooky and kooky atmosphere that Twin Peaks could have been if it hadn't been so focused on trying to ape an irritating soap opera. Funny thing though Twin Peaks was extremely popular in Japan, you can find some old news stories on YouTube about it.

It's not that good. The gameplay also revolves around a light mechanic where enemies can only be killed after shining a flashlight at them for a certain duration, which is an interesting concept from a lore perspective but serves no gameplay purpose other than to make each fight twice as tedious. It doesn't help that they massively increased the number of enemies during development without proportionally increasing the player's ammo reserves or gun damage, so combat generally ends up being 50% flashlight-kiting, 40% sprinting from ammo pickup to ammo pickup and 10% actually killing things.
The one redeeming element is the writing, which is generally excellent (aside from the last hour or two, when the plot just goes completely off the rails).
The sequel fixes most of the gameplay issues, but the writing gets fanfic-tier at times and you spend about half the game revisiting the same few areas.
Overall I'd say the first game is a 6/10, second game is a 7/10. Might be worth a pirate, but I wouldn't pay money for either.

I actually really enjoyed the game a lot. Personally one of my favorites for the story telling and feels. It definetly has this "reading a book feeling" since the game sucks Steven King's dick so hard. The ending sucks, but the game play is pretty inventive. Plus I really like the extremely meta theme of Alan being the writer who wrote the HBO style show you are playing (which is the game) being about himself trying to fight the writings he makes in the show. It's the kind of self insert bullshit I can identify with from reading shit on the internet when i was younger. People get pissy about the product placement, but I thought it was fitting for the theme they were going for and accepted it. Alan wake is a sell out, he even makes cardboard cut outs of himself.
There's one point in the game which I think they show how aware they are of it when you're running for your life form a spooky shadow monster, find a collectible tv and instead of the special content they make for watching it you get a ford commercial and a Verizon commercial. It's iffy how people can take it being how it takes you out of the trill of the game n all, but I thought it was pretty hysterical.
All in all don't take the game too seriously, it's fun if you allow it to be below you if that makes sense You can get some chuckles out of the characters and silly shit, as well as mock how much of a fart huffing prick Alan Wake really is. The opening scene where he gets all bitchy at his loving wife and runs out of the house like a pre-madona faggot really encapsulates who he is, and I love him for it. The game is best if you think of it like reading a book in a way and revising it from a book club perspective. Have a beer and enjoy.

The problem with twin peaks is that Lynch almost seemed to use the murder case as a means to explore everyone's weirdness without really coming to a conclusion. It didn't help that it ended on a really dumb cliffhanger due to people losing interest. Ive only watched one episode of the newer series

The new series is great for a fan of lynch but its lynchs 18 hour thesis statement on societies regression and demand for remakes/revivals as new art is dead. the ending is literally cooper travelling back in time to the start of it all and standing in the middle of a road screaming 'WHAT YEAR IS IT?!?' so its not quite subtle so while its cynical and bitter and intentionally designed to piss people off who just wanted season 1 all over again at the same time its still the best television made in this century thus far.

It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great even on it's own merits (certainly nothing close to the original), and I'll admit if that is really the intended subtext of the final episode I missed it, I just thought it was some randumb shit like everything in the lodge.
I get it, remakes are tiresome and uncreative, but this wasn't a remake, it was supposed to be a continuation that finished the unfortunately unfinished story of twin peaks and sewed up loose ends. Instead we got a completely different (and totally inferior, be serious) show that opened up a dozen loose ends for every one it addressed, while ignoring most of the central plotlines that fans wanted resolved. Yeah, maybe steak for dinner's a little boring or uninspired, but if you send someone chicken curry shit instead because what they want "stifles your creativity", don't expect a pat on the back.
>>16114651
Being a finely crafted and well-acted version of a soap opera is what made twin peaks great, I only wish the newer series had the focus or plot consistency of a low-quality soap. Whenever Lynch could pull his head out of his ass and be bothered to advance the main plot the show was watchable.

I think it's better than Max Payne 2. It was the last Remedy game that felt original in that loveable, campy way of theirs. But jesus, what it was originally going to be before they went to Microsoft. It was going to be a landmark title in graphics, weather effects, lighting, open world concept of horror. That's what makes me dislike it - thinking about what it could have been. The best parts of the game are the few moments you have free reign between large swathes of land in the daytime, imagine how it could have felt if the full game was designed around this in the end.
Unfortunately Remedy is cucked and dead now.

I wrote a paper on the game back in university and it took a bit of digging to get the full story going back to 2004 but they couldn't get the engine to do more in a dynamic setting than what they showed at a Intel trade show and they scrapped the open world purely because side quests and not reaching the right area at the right time didn't flow with their 'cinematic acton' studio ethos. For years people thought it was simply cut down for the episodic meme under microsofts direction but they simply couldn't get the open world running on an xbox 360 or PC back in 2004 and by 2007 scrapped most of it and restarted entirely. Hence the stuff about the raincoat killers was removed entirely.

I used to fantasise about it too till the aforementioned digging. Theres not a lot of evidence of it to be found but there was a period where it included big floating arrows in the corner of the screen to direct the player and they had to try and maintain every character was a unique character with a timetable and they said they couldn't do that without resorting to padding the towns with duplicated models which back in the days of Dead Rising meant like the same 5-6 townsfolk repeated over and over while the retail version manages to go the entire game with only repeating the taken character models and every person is a unique npc.

I just started this and got up to the start of episode 3. Gotta say that I want to like it but the actual gameplay is pretty boring because all you do is run around in the woods and the enemies are more annoying than scary. I don't really get why you have to lose everything you're carrying when an episode ends. The atmosphere and milieu are great, but the run around the dark forest parts outweigh the daytime parts so goddamn much that I tend to question if the good is good enough. I also wish that the dodge button wasn't the same as the sprint button. As for the story, I think it blew its' load way too early.
The whole finding manuscript pages foretelling the future and forming reality by the influence of some otherworldly evil being feels like a straight ripoff of In the Mouth of Madness.
I haven't played it through yet but I'm guessing the previous writer from 1970 found an ancient evil while he was diving and it somehow managed to influence his writing to become true while feeding him ideas in the form of his girlfriend/wife. He caught on to the fact that the evil being was trying to break free from hell or wherever and resisted by writing himself out of existence and destroying his home and the artifact or whatever in a volcanic eruption.
I wish Alan Wake and Deadly Premonition could have some kind of superbaby that would have decent looking graphics, the open world town with sidequests, time to get to know the area, some good writing and characters with some quirky and actual serious stuff mixed in and some good gameplay with maybe more of a puzzle/survival horror focus.

Alan literally quotes King in the opening CGI sequence, so you're definitely justified. Hell, the story is set in a Northern coastal town (not Maine, but I'd hazard a guess that Washington isn't all that different).
If you're aware of the anti-white agenda, then it's definitely a bit of a struggle getting through King's books (I'm trying to get through The Gunslinger and it was going great up until I got to the bit about the kid stuck in a time warp, and his back story references how his well-to-do father is skeptical of the poor oppressed niggers.
To your point, King's books have absolutely genius premises tainted by shitlib nonsense. It truly is a tragedy.
