Battle Circuit. It's a lot of fun. Reminds me why I love the genre. Also Fight'n Rage which I'm going to mention again when I get to the "shill a new one" part.

>What was your first?

Streets of Rage 2 on the Genesis. I rented that game religiously.

>What is your favourite?

Probably Final Fight 3, if I had to just pick one. It's really hard to narrow it down to one.

>What's the worst you ever played

Maybe Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds? It wasn't full-on bad but it just never clicked with me. I might give it another go eventually, but I would have to get it again since the PC version is never going to get the extras they added for the console release. I don't even remember what those extras were, though. I'm retarded.

Anyway, I put some time into Fight'n Rage and it's pretty good.

It depends on what you find fun in the genre. The fast paced ones are my favorites:

-Cadillacs and Dinossaurs

-Battle Circuit

-Armored Warriors

-Aliens vs Predator

-Streets of Rage 3

-Alien Storm (technically a beat´em up)

There are unique ones such as Final Fight 3 and rushing Beat 3, with their branching paths and different levels and endings depending on paths chosen (in the case of RB 3).

There is also the D&D Shadow Over Mystara, that is basically an arcade RPG mixed with beat 'em up mechanics, with it's many secrets, weapons, magic, etc. As well as there is dungeon Magic, which is basically a Diablo lite for arcade, with a beat 'em up mechanic instead of point and click.

000000  No.16111690

I was into the series from the start, because i liked how the first game had unique moments, like a level inside a bus, a boss that you could take his sword from him and use it against him (still a new thing at the time), and the ikari mechaninc. And of course, the soundtrack that stood out to me as much as the Streets of Rage one.

Then, with RB 2, i really liked the whole lot of secret moves and faster gameplay.

RB 3 is my favorite though. The gameplay is perfected, and the replay value lasts a lot with all the different paths, endings and playable characters, including the secret ones, with their own endings. It stood out to me at the time how much content the game had.

>they always seemed like "mash buttons and feed credits to win" to me.

Most of arcade games are slot machines but some can be won with a single credit with some training.

Twice I beat Punisher in the arcades with a single credit (most of the time I made it with two or three). Game is not easy but by learning and using all your moves (keep in mind it's only attack button and jump button) you could avoid all damage.

I'll shill again Captain Commando as a good entry for beginners because every stage is really short and because each of the four player characters are unique.

>Anyway, I put some time into Fight'n Rage and it's pretty good.

Can attest to that too, I've sunk over a hundred hour and I'm not done quite yet although I've already dealt with the hardest parts, although as other have said it's more like someone took mechanics, designs adn stage concepts wholesale from some of the classics and made a game out of that, it lacks something to make it it's own game, granted it plays wells and it's fun just if seeing stuff lifted wholesale from other games pisses you off don't touch it if you've played any SoR or Final Fight

Although now that I think about it it does require some fairly complex inputs and timings if you want to pull effective combos to deal with stuff in the game which is not really something you'd see in classic beat em ups at-least not as much nor as developed, the black belt training requirements really shows what the game expects you to master and if you think that's the hardest thing in the game you're dead fucking wrong.

Really the only fault is that the game expects you to do 8 endings for each chars and specific groupings of chars (bots are fun to play with though so that's nice if you can't find local coop partners since no online unless you use parsec/moonlight) and again for all 3 at once which gets a bit repetitive considering most endings are short and barely any different, survival / score attack / time attack are far more interesting as a whole especially when you get to play the completely busted bosses.

>some enemies are absolutely infuriating to fight

Seems to me like some enemies are meant to hard counter specific playable characters, but yeah fuck kickboxers in particular on harder difficulties those fuckers are insane

You probably didn't like it because you have to grind a lot to unlock all the moves for each girl some of them being pretty basic, like the double jump, and "phantom breaker", your super move, is locked as well, such a stupid decision, and if you focus entirely on unlocking those you'll hit a roadblock early on since the base stats won't do shit to stage 4+ enemies, the "tutorial" doesn't explain ANYTHING and the girl's base movesets are really bland except for the ninja's, give it another try with Nagi, you unlock her after beating the game, she's the not-renge look alike that wields a katana.

>I don't even remember what those extras were, though. I'm retarded.

An alternate soundtrack and 2 DLC characters, Frau and Kurisu from a shitty visual novel, they have awful movesets so you're not missing much, pretty sure you did get those extras in a update though, and if you're curious the switch/ps4 "Overdrive" rerelease offers nothing new compared to the ps3/360/vita releases, unless you count running at 1080p and with a slightly higher framerate an extra, it has all the DLC bundled in the base game though, but these days you can get the full game and DLC on a 7th gen console for less than $5, too bad it's dead on xbox, i'm missing a lot of trophies on that version.

>Also Fight'n Rage which I'm going to mention again when I get to the "shill a new one" part.

Now that it's on GOG and thus easy to pirate i'll give it a try, i hope it's good.

Those guys aren't too bad, just have to switch lanes until they give you an opening or git gud at parrying since they have some fairly predictable AI and the timing on their attack is fairly easy to read.

The hardest part is if you don't know you can aggro the last 3 before the final boss room individually by using the knives dropping from the others enemies that spawns.

I hope the game has made enough of a profit to start thinking of a sequel. It's funny how Ricardo becomes a beast in multiplayer, you almost feel bad for lariating enemies and racking up points from exploded enemies. Though Gal is my favorite, if only for her big chibi titties, though they're all fun to play with. I hope a potential sequel adds 2-3 more characters, and I'm guessing it will add a furry chick (don't care/like furries, but I'll admit the furry Gal boss made my boner confused with her pained squeals and moans when she gets hit). The part I truly loathe but is a great rest is the rainy jungle part, do many enemies with a chicken waiting for you at the end. And then it keeps adding more enemies.

Not really a beat 'em up, but I guess it's similar to Odin Sphere remake. What do you think about the Vagrant? I enjoyed it, Vivian is cute, but I wish the chink would've made more fluid animation if he was taking inspiration from Dragon's Crown. I'm not saying something as elaborate as that, but even SNES games have a few frames of animation if you are knocked into ground, the character bounces a bit, or has 2-3 frames when you're mid-air knocked out; or during the cutscenes, the characters barely emote, so that makes the so-so story even less engaging. Still, the gameplay is enjoyable and mindless, and it's hilarious how overpowered you are in subsequent playthroughs with all of your end-game equipment.

That's not true, i've beaten the game on my Vita two times already and there's no significant slowdown, not even in the infamous gwendolyn vs odette fight that ran so slowly in the original (single digit framerates) it could crash your console, still i'd recommend the PS4 version over the Vita or PS3 as it looks much nicer and runs at a locked 60fps.

The PAL release doesn't fix the slowdown by the way, it only fixes the crash on said fight, iirc it also adds japanese voices and spanish/german/french subtitles.

>i've beaten the game on my Vita two times already and there's no significant slowdown

Dips under 15 in the sewers an under 20 in a few other places @ stock so I'm calling bullshit on that, even lolicon isn't enough to keep over 30fps at all times

On top of that the framerate range is wider so the dips are far more noticeable.

>The PAL release doesn't fix the slowdown by the way

Wrong, it doesn't remove them but it does reduce it.
