With the recent popularity of shitty cashgrabbing "remakes" like HOMM3 HD or Duke Nukem World Tour, let's try to find some good ones. I've just got the Secret of Mana remake for the Vita and it seems pretty nice so far. The core of the game is unchanged, but the graphics are obviously much improved. I was impressed by the voice acting - old men, women, children have different voices; even single characters differ sometimes. There's also convenience additions like hotkeys for items. Well I was just playing it for only an hour or so, so I might still find some flaws later, but so far seems OK. Do you agree? What are your other examples?

Gonna get a lot of flak for this, but I genuinely think this game is an overall improvement on the original. The only thing I agree with other people is that throwing Bowser is unwieldy, but if you're playing on the original DS you can just like, pop the stylus just for him and if you're playing on an emulator you can just bind the Dpad to your analog stick.

I prefer remakes that are actually reinterpretations, like Silent Hill Shattered Memories. Games should be remastered very carefully, but not straight remade: because this always overlaps the original, and deletes it forever.
Just like retrokids who don't realize that the Lisa Trevor subplot in Remake 1 wasn't there originally, and its tone is totally at odds with the rest of the game. Or the Atlus special editions which bloat the game and take focus away from the original plot.

Honestly, remakes started becoming trash with the 5th console generation and we haven't seen another "good" one since the 6th generation. Reason why is that while they WERE used to show how much "better" things are with the new tech, developers eventually started imposing censorship, did something incredibly stupid to make the remake somehow inferior, or missing the entire point of the game altogether.

The HD ports of Nights in Dreams and Jet Set Radio were particularly decent. They aren't demonstrably different from the originals, just have the graphics bumped up to higher resolutions and support for modern controllers. The 2011 remaster of Sonic CD was also very nice, aside from the Japanese intro theme removing the vocals due to Casey Rankin's estate not wanting to negotiate a deal with Sega. Jet Set also had some songs removed due to licensing now that I think about it.
On the flipside, I was disgusted to hear how Rez Infinite mangled the game's music. Many of the samples are either mixed super low or removed entirely. Worse still, there was supposed to be a patch for over a year ago, and still isn't around. I don't know why they couldn't just port the 2008 360 version instead. Shitty mixed music isn't a trade off for VR gimmicky shit and one new level.

Just got done with S ranking with ClaireA on hardcore, and I gotta say, it was pretty fun. I guess I may have just been nostalgiafagging too hard from discovering the classic replacement option for the sounds in the options I'd be interested to look into how much of the original team worked on it, aside from the fact that Mikami and Kamiya didn't touch it.

Okay, Doom 3 and Resurrection of Evil is a reboot of the series with Doom 3 being a remake of the original Doom. However, nuDoom (Doom 4), and the upcoming Doom Eternal, pick up after the events of Doom 64 and continue on the narrative of the original games (Doom, Doom 2, Final Doom, Doom 64, and Quake 3, although none of it is story).

Change for the sake of change is always a destructive action. >Remake
A redo of a game, whilst usually at least keeping some key elements, often from the ground up in visuals/audio/gameplay quality, but can also simply be the same game with redone gameplay (Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir being both gameplay remake and enhanced port between it's two modes).
>Remaster
Upscale of of an existing game. Gameplay may see minor tweaks, but not enough to be considered remade. Can be on par with the original, or worse by virtue of graphical glitches/bad port job.
>Reboot
Takes existing brand name and at least some of the characters/aspects, and disregards the previously established continuity, often to appeal to a newer, possibly bigger audience than the previous one. Hard to right, very easy to do wrong.
>Revival
Don't see the term used much, but I'd assume a new entry in a series considered long dead. Like Glory of Heracles seeing a fifth game for the DS, fourteen years after GoH IV on the SFC. Or maybe just doing anything with an IP after so long.
The fact you actually need this explained strikes me as sadly telling of the state of things.
