I think it's a little bit overrated but still a must play. The takedown was completely retarded, not to mention unwarranted because AM2R and samus returns are completely different beasts, but lawyers gotta sue.
Really though, I think an aspect that's seldom noted about AM2R is how much of a demo for setpieces it is. The dev went crazy with these unique sections with minigames, escape sections and pseudo-cutscenes. One might say it's good, but I think it's fluff and not really the point of metroid. There's still a very solid metroid at the core, but it's obvious a lot of fancy fluff was added to make up for the fact there's not a whole lot to the game as a pure metroid when all is said and done, and replayability is low.
Extensive romhacks like hyper metroid are more my speed (not that hyper metroid is flawless mind you), but sure, AM2R is a solid 7 to 8 and it's a shame it became saddled with drama.
