Assets take time and/or money to create, and it's a necessity that the scope or quality of games would have to drop to match the smaller market. This is fine if you want a lot of short games like undertale and very bad if you're interested in games like single player shooters, adventure games, lengthy RPGs, rhythm games, et cetera.

Gaming needs to shrink somewhat but the old niche is pretty much dead. It's no longer possible for one smart programmer and a couple of dudes to build a full quality game out of a garage with a shoestring budget.

All of those games can be made on small budget, just reduce the graphical fidelity. A game doesn't need 4k assets in super-HD with real-time raytracing and other next-gen tech to look great; it just needs a good artstyle.

It's much easier to make those games than it was before. Only problem is almost every dev, even indies, is still a slave to market trends even if they don't admit it, so they try to go for "good" or at least stylized graphics. There's too much history in the industry at this point and people don't know how or don't want to innovate.

Yeah, there's a number of bad agents at work in vidya. For instance, going to GDC is getting more expensive every year, and the company that runs it makes big bucks for doing basically nothing, since the speakers only get free admission (and don't get reimbursed for travel or accommodations). Then they have the audacity to lock away presentations in the GDC Vault, which developers have to pay $550 if they want to access all of (a ridiculous expensive considering how cheap bandwidth is these days).

I hope whoever anchored this realizes that, even if the outage was only for a few hours, it doesn't diminish the factor it literally crippled the console. It's a textbook case of what always online would lead to.
