If they just sped it up by maybe 25% and stop putting basic moves like backstepping into a dumb exp grind it would be fine. Really sucks that you have to play the game for a few hours before it even begins to have acceptable gameplay while Symphonia started right out with 3 characters.

Neither of these have love stories, but both SMT: Strange Journey and Etrian Odyssey 3 are DRPGs with a shitload of stuff to discover. If you don't mind playing a Tactical RPG then Stella Glow, Fire Emblem pre-Awakening and SMT: Devil Survivor will also work.

If you want to give it a pirate and can read Japanese, Bravey Second has several relationships, although some get more screen time than others. It's also got some good mechanical updates from Bravely Default, although I think the focus on balancing the different classes could have done better (coming from somebody who prefers things to be broken in a good way). The ending is also video games as fuck and I love it. The Illuminati uses mictrotransactions to fuck you up, a main character steals letters off the title screen, the Gane of the Year edition of the previous game saves a different main character's life, the save point and bonus boss is the most important character, and the OP you see for the first four fucking chapters finally has a pay off, it's retarded and I love it.

It sounds more like you want a visual novel like Utawarerumono. But I don't know what new JRPG fits all of those. Many JRPGs these days either became Dungeon RPGs or VNs. I would recommend trying out Ar Tonelico 2 with the Restoration patch. It's a great PS2 game that had all the bullshit NISA put into the game and upgraded.
