The really bizarre thing is that the first half (or first third) of the game isn't so bad. The beginning is actually pretty great with the multiple camera angles building up the tension as you try to clean up evidence of the murder you apparently just committed in the diner bathroom while the cop slowly makes his way there.

Second half is pretty much when the plot goes to complete shit.

I could have accepted her having not cried in that decade she grew up. It's contrived, but I could have believed it. What I can't accept is that she grew up emotionally fine, not at all distant or repressed, and turned into a stereotypical Disney princess.

What really gets me is that she could have been done so much better. Being unable to cry and force to grow up quickly to fill the empty leadership left by her dead dad, she ends up completely repressing her emotions, intentionally keeping herself from getting too close to anyone. She becomes someone that, while cordial, fair, and not an unpleasant person, never smiles and always keeps her distance. But then Eggman takes interest in her, and she finds herself forced into an adventure of thrills with the ever-happy-go-lucky, fun-loving, thrill-seeking Sonic the Hedgehog. And, through this, she ends up getting to live out the childhood fantasies and adventures she missed out on. She ends up warming up to the hedgehog, and eventually smiles for the first time in a very long time. But then something terrible happens to Sonic. It can be his death, however stupid that is, or he just gets horribly injured, whatever. This guy she just met, for the first time since she was a little girl, caused her to actually feel genuine joy and excitement, and now she is about to lose him. The one person she allowed herself to get close to is gone or will be, just like her father. This becomes the breaking point, all those emotions she had bottled up all those years can't be contained anymore, and she just lets it all out, finally breaking the seal.

There. I won't say it makes perfect sense or is an amazing story, but it's a hell of a lot better than the actual thing, and it was easy. A competent writer could do much better than what I wrote. It boggles my mind how they could have written such a stupid story, even after the likes of Shadow the Hedgehog.

It was more execution of the ideas than anything that pisses me off the most. A lot of puzzle pieces were forced into place during the story, making a large picture that didn't make sense like it should've. The romantic subplot was downright uncalled for and out of place, while Mephiles' ultimate plan of executing Sonic had no build up, so it felt like an off-chance encounter with a premise that player's had nearly forgotten about by the time it came for it to be relevant. The addition of time travel plot points, poorly-timed cheesy dialogue, and Ill developed characterization only hindered the ideas the writing staff had. Shadow's Episode could have been absent from the game and it would've made little difference. It felt like there was nothing at stake until you were already losing. Elise was an objective, not a character. Eggman wasn't capable of handling what he was dealing with, and yet he committed to the idea anyways. Silver was a patsy throughout the entire game and was too clueless to realize it. And lord help whatever the fuck they did to Blaze.

And ending the game by writing itself out of canon was pretty fucking stupid. The story's own ambition is what killed it.

Deus Ex Human Revolution has a stupid plot. I like the game, I like the characters, but the plot falls to shit at the end, and it's not just because of the "pick an ending" machine. For one, the concept of "rejection syndrome" is kind of nonsensical to begin with. Why would the human body reject what amounts to nothing more than a prosthetic limb that somehow draws energy from the nervous system? I don't think this is ever explained it the game, I don't think there is any real world scientific theory behind such an idea, and it's too important a plot point to just disregard. It's important because, if this concept isn't thoroughly explained and implemented in the world, then the lazily applied social commentary that relies upon this plot point, and the conflict from which it arises, cannot be used to effectively communicate said social commentary. One of the game's central themes is class warfare; the game uses this plot point to emphasize that some of the augmented among the general population are forced into their situation against their will, or as the result of their circumstances, and are then saddled with immense debt and lifelong reliance on a special drug that will allow them to maintain the use of their augmentations. It's like the writers chose the themes first and then used convenience to stitch together the vital in-universe concepts, as nothing more than a service to their plot.

Secondly, at the end of the game, all of the augmented people throughout the entire world suddenly become frantic killing machines with no sense of self control, and all because the CEO of Tai Yong Medical distributed a killswitch to the masses, presumably to keep the augmented under authoritarian control, which ultimately fell into the wrong hands. This concept is also never really explained, and we're just expected to accept that people are somehow suffering from traumatic hallucinations that are severe enough to shatter their perception of reality. I'll admit that the logic behind this plot point could actually make sense, provided that we were given some breadth, but we're never given more of an explanation beyond, "look! all the clanks have a magic chip that makes them go crazy!" This is weak for the same reason that the rejection syndrome as a concept is weak; the writers chose the series of events first, and gave very little, or no, thought to the underlying in-universe concepts that are supposed to govern these people as much as gravity, or exposure to the elements, or any other natural and physical limitation of our world. It just sucks.

tl;dr Deus Ex Human Revolution has some weak writing because the explanations for in-universe concepts are never given, and these concepts only exist as a bunch of made up nonsense that is only ever used as a plot device and nothing more.

But yes, the writing in the game is lacking in many ways, personally for me the biggest issue was how everything revolved around augs, absolutely everything, you can hear a couple fighting in their apartment and guess what they're fighting about? augs, gang wars? augs, riots? augs, random books/emails? all aug related, there's the australian civil war and that's it, though chances are the war was caused by augs and i missed where it said that.

That was only the augs on the giant sea base that was supposedly only possible because of augs. The idea was to make a switch to higher tech necessary so that they could install a kill switch or control switch that would prevent the augs from ever going against the powers that be, but the guy who came up with augs tried to fuck that over. This is why you get the stuff that makes you have glitches right before the situation arose, but not after. The problem there is that if you can already send out a signal that will fuck with augs, then you don't need the control mechanism. You can cripple them with just the signal.

It is also missing what the original got, which was that augs would be pretty specialized and pricey. Paramilitary organization? Augs would be a benefit. Secretary? Really pricey for something that being a good people person can get you, or simply being attractive. It isn't something I can see being picked up by a lot of people, because it would be pricey, maintenance would be insane, and you can't exactly undo cutting off your fucking arm.

It misses a lot of potential of Deus Ex by having it be just about augs. A better story, going off of the base idea of Jensen being a corporate rent-a-cop for a company that is working on augments for the government, is corporate warfare ending up being a front for Illuminati infighting and the slow rise of the MJ12 into the dominant organization by the time of Deus Ex. Jensen either inadvertently, or by the choices that make perfect sense in the game for the character to make, ends up helping MJ12 into power, or is such a small player in the scheme that he bears witness to everything going on, figures out what is going on, but can't do anything about it.

No. Compared to fallout 3 the gameplay in 4 is excellent. Compared to fallout 3, compared to any other game it was mediocre at best. Fallout 3 had a severe problem with level scaling leading to HP bloat and most of the weapons sucked ass and were awful to use. I also disagree that it should have turned into a Rad Bomb, the filtration system had been barely operational before the Enclave moved in, so it shouldn't have stored enough radiation to make a instant kill radius like that and honestly shouldn't have contained more radiation than you would have gotten just swimming through the damn thing.

Last point of contention is in regards to the GECK kit, it can be argued that being cannabilized into filtration parts is a better, but you are really underselling just what it CAN do, it's not just a 'few trees', its actually scrubbing the radiation from the soil as well and also possibly revitalizing it, opening the doorway to new farmland and could potentially turn a sizeable swathe of DC into the Enclaves new breadbasket. So I really dont see this as being ignorance but more quibbling than anything else

I assume your father knows the plan because Fallout 2 occurred in the past, with the Enclave's various killings, FEV experimentation, and eventually trying to release airborne FEV to kill everyone 'impure'. So, being a smart guy, me might recognize that genocidal scientists with FEV might not have good things to do with the purifier. Even if he didn't know who the Enclave are (unlikely), they did just bust in and start killing everyone.

Also, the Purifier actually does function without a Geck, it just doesn't have anywhere to release the radiation properly, leading to it either cleaning the water briefly with that shielding, or releasing it into the room.

Also, the Geck's usage wildly varies due to the original Fallout Bible calling it a straight up maguffin for the writers. The original contained a kit with seeds, fertilizer, cold fusion power generator, a humble basic replicator, and various other useful things like instructions for dismantling vaults. The one in 3 seems to either be a straight up matter energy replicator or a very damn good radiation scrubber. It was likely to be used mainly because cleaning radiation for constant clean water is better long term than cleaning a town's area for some farmland, which wouldn't even be very useful with radioactive water contaminating crops.

Now it's been some time since I've actually played 2, so I don't know just how common knowledge that plot was but Autumn is also acting in open revolt against the Presidents plan, so its utter foolishness that he wouldn't be able to at least communicate that to avoid Dad from sabotaging the machine they BOTH want working at top capacity.

And in regards to the purifier working without a GECK that still doesn't explain that it behaved the way it did. It doesn't just magically remove the radiation and store it in barrels until it reaches maximum capacity and still shouldn't have fried the two of them the way it did and also it shouldn't have been instantly fatal levels because again it's not just storing radiation like toxic waste.

And yeah, the GECK is something that really changes depending on the circumstance, but in 3 it seems that it's just the Genesis Device from Star Trek given how it work if you walk up to it and turn it on, boots up and then restores all matter to a pristine state in an indeterminate range. With the way it's behaving in this game I will say that it is 100% better suited to be used in any situation other than the fucking Brita Water Filter.
