The second one is pretty good. It's a notable improvement over the first one in terms of mechanics and execution. You might want to wait a month or two though since word is the next patch will update the skill trees for races from the first game to be more sophisticated and similar to the ones from the second game.

Granted, it's still got some issues like how cavalry sends units flying a ridiculous distance, even when running them down. This makes large units kind of shit for running enemies down since they spend more time knocking them around than doing damage. And most things still work like Rome 2 like settlements having limited build slots and being forced to have a general unit to recruit and move units. I enjoyed it for about 2 weeks and then went back to Med 2. It's just annoying to play.

You need to pace yourself. The AI will take significantly more time to attack if you don't share a border. It also counts more when you have several highly developed provinces than a large wasteland.
