Just played through both campaigns of the base game. Great music, great aesthetic but holy shit are the campaigns boring compared to RA2 and Generals. Not sure if I can stomach Firestorm at this point.
Are the Tiberium Wars campaigns any better? I had planned to play them through next.

Gameplay-wise "mainline" C&C peaked with Tiberium Sun as it was the last of them that truly mixed perfectly the unit rooster with lore creating a balanced game despite two very different factions and the signature "base building".
GDI control space, ground and skies, Nod use underground, stealth and weird advanced tech in very specific domains to keep up which merge perfectly with the game world.
Compare RA2 VS RA units roosters and you will quickly see what I mean. In Red Alert the Allies have lost of cheap units, the soviets have tremendously better units but so much more expensive.
In RA2, everyone gets "tier-ed" vehicles, which is much easier to balance dev'-wise, easier to play gamer-wise but also it makes both faction much more blander with a tendencies to go rock-paper-scissor.
Now in RA2 it's done skillfully enough that it's ok but in hindsight you can clearly see that it's the slippery slope that killed C&C, because the same tendencies is what make C&C3 bland and boring and the entire concept is what C&C4 is solely built on.
It's also why General + Zero Hour is great. Because the three factions play almost entirely differently.

TS was a fucking unbalanced mess with broken units given out like candy, so much so that WW had to rush out Firestorm with a bunch of fixes. Playing Nod on multiplayer is suicide. That said, TS is one of the better games in the series.
Generals strays so far from the original formula it might as well not even be a C&C game. Units move slow as molasses, overabundance of commander powers, basebuilding was changed to generic Age of Empires style building, horrible unit bottlenecking problems and so on. Even 3 is closer to the originals.

Firestorm adds a lot to the base game, the campaigns aren't as exciting as RA2/YR but the godtier aesthetics is what kept me coming back to the game this many years later. Tiberium Wars is pretty fun too and you get to see some of the cut content we would've had in TS (scrin faction) and don't forget Kane's Wrath because it is as big of an improvement as firestorm was.
If you weren't much of a C&C fag I can see why TS might not be that good but fucking hell do I love the game and it's story telling through all of those live-action cutscenes. RA2 always has been easier to pick up due to its simple, fast-paced gameplay but no other aspect of the game could hold a candle to TS&FS

The introduction of the scrin faction kept things interesting but besides seeing kane in all of his glory once again I didn't care too much for any of the plot past TS/RA2. The lack of an interesting soundtrack and none of the vibrant, colorful tiberium fauna from firestorm kind of killed the atmosphere for me. They did have those really neat red zones with massive tiberium cliffs and pillars which sort of captured the old feel but instead most of the time you're trudging through shitty civilized blue zones with nothing going on. Still ended up being pretty fun with all of its faults.
On the other hand, does anyone even remember anything from RA3 besides its soundtrack?

RA2 writing was already fan fiction tier.
It's "fun" (that's arguable*) fan fiction so it got a pass but Westwood was bought by EA when they were doing Firestorm, it was all downhill from there.
*C&C humor stemmed as it was "over the top" sci-fi/alternate reality but it was always played straight. And Red Alert was the bleakest of them all, with torture, depressing & distraught military leaders and soldiers, murder of POW, etc… Stalin act goofy at times, as the game progresses, but it's to emphasis his madness and creepiness not comic relief (and the pay off for that build up is his assassination).
Meanwhile RA2 is a parody… of C&C.

I think in terms of raw "fun" factor RA2+YR are the two best C&C games.
TS+FS definitely had an excellent aesthetic, and I think they were the most inherently creative and "serious" of any of the C&C games.
Both RA2/YR and TS/FS have their pros and cons.
I would take any of them over Generals though.

had similar experiences in other games - when they become overly frustrating and it has been 20 attempts with no nearing to success, i ditch them.

Tiberian Sun+Firestorm have some of the best aesthetics of any game I've played; it's so insanely distinctive with its own great sci-fi feel that it's painful how much EA missed the ball with C&C3 and C&C4. Not to mention, I fucking love the soundtrack of every C&C game before Generals, and TS is no exception.
Tiberian Sun itself as a game, though, is… okay. The balance is fairly fucked, and the missions either require cheesing or you end up curbstomping everything. It can still be fun, but hot damn is it un-fun to get wrecked by some extreme cheese.
A shame we'll never get any good Tiberium universe games again. There's so much potential, especially with FPS's/etc. Renegade had potential, but like everything EA had a part in, got fucked with too much. At least we have Renegade X

Tiberian Sun follows the events of Command and Conquer, where GDI defeated Nod but Nod remains as a sort of "underground" group of terrorists. Tiberium spreads across the world, acting as a sort of parasitic substance while simultaneously being extremely valuable for stuff like research/etc. Tiberian Sun kicks off with Nod sort of returning to its former glory, with Kane (the leader of Nod thought to be killed in the timeline of C&C) eventually returning as well. Various sci-fi shenanigans ensue, as GDI and Nod vie for control of the planet.

>ending shows Cabal and Kane, who's still alive, merging
>however planet is so infested with Tiberium that the earth won't be able to support human life in a year
The original goal of the plot got washed away after this as C&C3 was basically cancelled and resurrected with a decade inbetween and pretty much ignored Tiberian Sun plotwise but for some mentions here and there.
Supposedly the original plan for Tiberium Wars that Westwood had would have tied up Tiberian Sun and been 4 faction game with Cabal, Nod, GDI, and Scrin

People who sputter
>not muh cnc
are just whiny autistic faggots getting mad because a game didn't have the exact formula they wanted yet again.
The only glaring flaws were the horrible balance that came from having essentially 12 fucking factions in zero hour (making it even worse than slavs playing HOMM3), and the fucking de-syncs (jesus christ you don't even have any idea how many retarded things could result in a de-sync). The ease of modding eventually greatly reduced these as issue, and kept the game alive for a decade, similar to RA2
There are other things to complain about, but it's generally more technical stuff, like the hilariously inflated drawcalls generated by most models, because just about every unit had several or more parts, buildings had many dozens, and everything shared textures in the most retarded way possible. This resulted in them using the "paddle people" infantry look in an effort to not kill performance, but reducing poly counts is basically the least important performance optimization you can do.

I actually enjoyed RA3. It's a huge step away from the previous RA titles, but the cheesy James Bond /60s Agent movie style humor somehow clicks with me.
The mission design isn't half-bad either, imho. I think the main problem people have with the gáme really is that it doesn't take itself very seriously, but that is a bit of a fleeting evolutution - RA1 was very much no-nonsense, but RA 2 already has Yuri and the entire psychic bullshit.
