It's the laziest way to go about making a f irst person shooter without having to worry about good level design which is integral to such a game. That's part of the reason why these kind retro nostalgia bait games never measure up to the source they're trying to emulate and end up more or less the same when compared to one another.

Randomly generated levels for an fps are a joke, good fps games live and die by their level design, something is not even present at all with that system in place.
The roguelite progression being bad feeds into this. Power progression in good fps games is linear with power spikes when you get a new weapon, or ammo for that weapon you found in a secret.
See how progression and level design intertwine?
All of that is skipped in your shitty game because designings good levels is hard.

>procedural generated levels or whatever its fucking called
Levels are not entirely random but it lacks clear direction, even the worst levels of any game that's crafted by hand is better than the best levels made randomly as even the worst levels do have some cohesion, it also does not make up for the lack of 'content' because your brain will notice patterns and realize it's not that unique. Level design is a key element in good memorable shooters.

Because we haven't gotten to the point where algorithms can generate levels that are actually good and actually different each time you play it, you can't randomly generate a sense of progression or a story or expect the computer to have any common sense whether an enemy encounter is bullshit or not. Instead indie devs opt for a stopgap solution where levels are instead randomly divided into a list of pre-fabricated rooms with some random bells and whistles and randomized enemy placements and random curses or some such shit, which eventually gets tiring in the long run as you'll gradually see everything the game has to offer. Like cutting a 2-hour long game into very small pieces, then rearranging those pieces to make something incoherent and masking it with RNG to make it look unique. Unfortunately the RNG also largely determines resource placement, so often you just can't survive because a health item or ammo item wouldn't drop
Roguelite progression nowadays is just gay skinnerbox bullshit 90% of the time, because most of the time the end result is that you can't reasonably progress past a certain point because you couldn't invest into the skill tree which gives you bigger starting bonuses for each playthrough, so you have to grind through the game until you can finally build yourself to be strong enough to deal with all the bullshit the game throws at you. I guess you could technically beat the game on its first try with a clean slate, but that would require you to know the game inside out after having experienced a hundred playthroughs and I highly doubt any developers designed the game around that possibility, else they wouldn't shove all the unlockable shit in your face
Even so this roguelite crap effectively acts as a slot machine where sometimes you'll get really shit items and the game just becomes tedious because you're too underpowered and all the enemies are bulletsponges, or you become too overpowered and nothing poses a real challenge. Even if you can persevere through sheer skill with shitty items you're unlikely to have a good time with it as opposed to a game whose challenge isn't seeing what the algorithms shit out
This randomly generated shit can only work if there's a shitload of content of which you may only see 10% per run, and the levels situation being so highly mutable that each playthrough does actually feel different, as with the old roguelikes, Isaac with several expansions, and dorf fort. If you're just going to rearrange existing rooms, it's gonna feel cheap

None of the enemies in the game are bullet sponges and being able to dodge and react well is paramount. This in no way damages the game because Strafe uses the environment to your advantage when attacking enemies and avoiding attacks
>If you're just going to rearrange existing rooms, it's gonna feel cheap
Not if you enjoy the gameplay. I don't understand why you think a game is ruined by something being randomly generated or not.
>so you have to grind through the game until you can finally build yourself
There's no grinding, just skill. You can go through the entire game as melee if you want to, or even just with your fists to challenge yourself. As I said there is more than one campaign and there are many challenge stages.
>but that would require you to know the game inside out after having experienced a hundred playthroughs
That's the point of the game. The better you get at it, the faster and more enjoyable it becomes until you can just speedrun it. It's cathartic and enjoyable.
>I highly doubt any developers designed the game around that possibility
That is precisely what the devs did
>so often you just can't survive because a health item or ammo item wouldn't drop

>Not if you enjoy the gameplay
Nigger, how the fuck do you think people begin enjoying the gameplay in the first place? Is it seeing the same fucking room playing out near-identically like when you saw that room in the last three runs?
>The better you get at it, the faster and more enjoyable it becomes until you can just speedrun it
You don't need the procedurally generated nonsense for that, and if the game only gets fun if you speedrun it or in the challenge stages or if I have to make up my own challenges then that doesn't necessarily make the base game any good
>You shouldnt be getting hit in the first place
Bro
There's almost no game where this isn't the case. You take damage in games like these because it's a statistical inevitability, especially from the dumb-ass fucking falling damage after falling only 3 feet and all the fucking splash damage
If they wanted to make a game you could complete without ever taking a single hit they wouldn't put so much RNG in it

Physics are shit, you can't even strafe jump. If this was procedurally generated quake with an exponential difficulty curve across AT LEAST 6 levels then you'd have my attention, but as soon as you sell a game called STRAFE to someone who likes to strafe jump or bunny hop, and they can't do either, you fucked up.
Movespeed should be halved(strafing added) and unforgiving play mechanics should be implemented, if I'm not dodging multiple static/homing projectiles bearing very conflicting attack vectors that force me to take the fucking scenic route, I'm not having fun.

Start with rockets that move faster then the players base movespeed, moreso then can even be upgraded, meaning that if you can't C jump you can't get past level 3.
I want a treadmill level that leads to a garbage chute blender where nothing short of premium air control will get through the randomly generated maze of boxes and clutter falling onto the treadmill at the far side, completely unpredictable. I want bridge to rail secret areas. I want lava born strafe pads with little F-16 fuckers flying 3x my top potential strafe speed trying to knock me off if I can't double back with sexy 180 degree strafes, fucking up the flow of the pads and accidentally over accelerating. I want iterations of these same F-16 fuckers that refuse to fly in front of me so I have to strafe backwards to even think about shooting at them.
You gave me none of this with Strafe.

Adding to this, roguelite elements are a crutch for developers who don't have the time or money to develop a full game. It's WAY easier to force players to beat your entire 1-2 hour experience in one go than it is to create 6+ hours worth of content to challenge them with.
Remember how old NES would just make the games extremely hard to make a short experience last longer and earn more money? Roguelites use the exact same method to stretch a small pool of content a long way.
It's the worst genre and a sure sign of a dev who is desperately hoping to replicate the success of The Binding of Issac.
