Most societies figured out that polygny (fancy way of saying one man with multiple wives) is a bad idea for social stability.

In the past quite a few societies created momentum for conquest by curtailing young men access to suitable mates. An 18-year-old guy will have much less to offer to a woman than a man in his thirties, even if she is to becoming his second, third or even fourth wife. Now multiply the number of older men with multiple wives (and keep in mind the ratio of men to women is usually always 1:1 or thereabout) and there's suddenly a shortage of mates for young men.

So how do these men get their chance to find a mate? Go over to another tribe and steal their women (along with loot and land). Suddenly they're the 30-year-old guy with money and land to support his wives/concubines. Rinse and repeat for the next generation.

Sounds like a pretty sweet gig, right? Well, problems come when conquering other tribes or kingdoms becomes an impossibility for whatever reason. There's no more influx of young women from conquest, it's much more difficult to get rich in a reasonable amount of time to make yourself a viable mate for the limited number of females on the market and there's no attrition to cull the number of young men you're competing against. What you end up with is social instability as young men get restless and start shit for the sake of starting shit.

Likely half the reason Arab countries are such shitholes is because of the lack of females due to polygamy. So too is the reason women aren't allowed outside without a male escort, there's always the fear another clan will come along and steal the girl to make her the wife of one of their members.

tl;dr Basically, successful societies figured out that polygamy led to internal instability and that it was much more productive to "give" beta males a surefire mate (in most cases) and turn him into a loyal and hard-working member of society.

I think playing as the "hero" is somewhat different from "I get the used goods" trope. One is wish fulfillment.
