maybe your route is too risky and you are going through very dangerous paths? try and seek easier routes, don't go straight into a pattern, figure out ways to pre-empt them and dodge them easier

You'll want to die on purpose a bunch of times to get a feel for your hitbox. Fuck around until you know exactly how close you can get to a bullet. Don't dodge on reflex, learn to predict how the patterns will occupy the playfield.

Not about consistency. It's about learning where the bullets come from, the pattern, and being able to that to find the path. Even if you react, knowing that the pattern comes in a certain way at a certain point helps reactions.

Back in the early 2000's my family had purchased a "10,000 games megapack" for Windows XP that was basically a bunch of game demos you could test out before buying the full version. That's how I was introduced to some real gems, like Platypus, Ricochet, Brave Dwarves, The Adventures of Bouapha: Spooky Castle, and this one Shmup I will never find the name of despite years of searching.

The soundtrack was killer, it had a spaceship that you could rotate through a number of weapons, from a periodic laser blast to a bullet hell spread to a number of others you could equip. I played through that demo so many times, never realizing the game could've been longer than 5 minutes, and now, it's like it never even existed.

Anyone know the name? Besides that, anyone know of some good Shmups/bullet hells with a lot of ship/weapon customization?

No idea who made it, I remember it having an X in the name somewhere, like 200X or X Megapack or something. I was 9 at the time so I don't remember much. The ship was shapes like a reverse Millenium falcon, somewhat, being almost circular, with a half-rectangle for the thruster/exhaust port. The last level was full of muddy pink organic asteroids/tumors that burst into water-balloons of goo. Had a dance-synth techno soundtrack.

Is it true that the key to getting good at these games comes down to memorizing every stage and every boss attack, not getting good at reacting and dodging? I read a guide that said you memorize not dodge.

You want the secret? Become obsessive over pixel perfect movements. Learn how many pixels each bullet takes up, learn the pixel size of your damage box, learn patterns. Those are the basis of how to be good at SHMUPS. Memorizing size of each bullet, and how best to avoid it, learning the patterns of the different enemies and bosses you might face. Once you do that, you are golden. It's basically a memorization exercise.

So you get lazy and let everything intersect the rest of your ship, then get DESTROYED in older games where your hitbox is made of 8x8 pixel tiles.

Just memorise the patterns and develop tactics to avoid them. After a few tries, you'll remember what to do with each pattern in order to avoid it.
