5bda45  No.15991988

We have threads about annoying enemies in games but what about annoying mechanics, parts of the game that are so fucking infuriating that it would be better for them not to be there. Can be both gimmicks and entire segments of games.

For me SMT: Stranges Journey had those bloody fucking dark rooms which were incredibly annoying to deal with, yeah you could see through them but with an item that you get later on, and you spend a good around of time just fumbling around in the fucking dungeons crashing at walls and getting into annoying random encounters only to realize that you've missed one exit and now HAVE TO GO BACK.

714eb3  No.15991992

is this worth playing or is it just 50 hours of grinding and random encounters?

5bda45  No.15992000

e12316  No.15992157

>>15991988

The dark rooms in Serious Sam 3 are absolute ass. Same goes for the puzzles. It's incredible how the developer that went on to make The Talos Principle was able to incorporate such unfun and pacing destroying puzzles into SS3. Since I'm on about that game anyway, I'll bring up the technopolyps, more readily known as "the fucking annoying helicopter with tentacles." They're not even difficult enemies to deal with, just overly tedious. They combine the bullshit of hitscan in an FPS that stresses not abusing cover with the tedium of hitting an enemy that is immune to bullet damage with slow travelling rockets while said enemy is permanently in the air and is most often stationary when it is shooting and thus you should not be in line of sight.

These annoyances are more general:

>level requirements to use weapons

>multiplayer games with locked weapons

>multiplayer games with matchmakers

>" " with competetive modes

>" " with ranks and seasons

>unnecessary stealth systems

Shared skill trees between multiple party members. Makes characters lose their individuality if they can get the same abilities across each other by going into other party members skill tree. Also, not really a mechanic, but I hate when games tie trophies to online only, when there is a possibility that those serves will be gone in the near future.

Exploring planets with the Mako in the first ME got boring and irritating real fast.

Not so much because of the Mako itself, but for the fact every planet was barren, dull, and overall ugly as shit, and when you found the shitty bases you were supposed to attack you soon realize it was just three or four templates with slight variations. Not to mention "I WILL DESTROY YOU" "ENEMIES EVERYWHERE"

The story missions involving the Mako were pretty fun though.

>killable women

All these new games pander to the male fantasy of stabbing women in the neck with a shovel.

The only reason they added women to bf V is so that men could slaughter them and kill them.

They really nailed the feel as well. Nothing beats mowing down a squad of female soldiers in Battlefield V™ with your trusty MG3… Hearing them scream for help and medic as they bite the bullet and slowly bleed to death…

They have made it extremely pleasing and fun, but it's not even realistic or historically accurate. The only reason these savages added women to BFV is, because they wanted to slaughter them and live out their gross fantasies of stabbing women and beating them down.

Short-lived buffs.

Double-tap controls.

Replacing cutscenes with segments where people are talking and you're still technically in control but all you can do is look around and move in a confined space. Even worse if you're required to manually move forward to progress the dialogue, and worse still if your movement speed is faster than the NPCs' movement speed so you have to constantly start and stop. Whoever thought this was a better idea than cutscenes that can have interesting things happening and that people can skip if they want to was a fucking idiot.

This depends, really. If it's a buff you manually cast that only lasts like 5 minutes for +100 defense or whatever then yeah that's stupid but if it's one of those overly specific "next 5 seconds after a critical hit increases attack speed" type things then it's fine. Really, manual buffs in general tend to be uninteresting crap unless there's some resource management or radius trickery involved.

Games where you can set skills with no restrictions in-between battles at no cost and the game relies HEAVILY on your active skill set but there's no way to fit in every skill you might need and no way to change your skill set in battles, leading to 90% of the difficulty from the first attempt against a boss being guess-work where you have a 50% chance of getting a turn 2 party wipe or absolutely curbstomping the boss.

I mean would it be thatgame breaking to put in a special command which costs 1.5+ turn icons to let you change your active skillset? By the time you get to the really difficult battles the game has been reduced to vanity+ragnarok+suku/dekaja and dekunda, so it would only have an impact on story fights anyway.

RNG leveling up stats

RNG fusion overwrite of skills/not picking your skills

random enemy encounter

backtracking with random enemy encounter because of trial and error trap (all these SJ)

slow character movement with long hallways and large rooms, followed by forced backtracking (SotN)

Skinner's Box RNG loot instead of currency system (WoW)

Lootboxes (Overwatch, EA games)

unskippable cutscenes

no option to read previous dialogue if you press next or A by accident, or if you wish to re-read. Paper Mario did an excellent job having this option and other rpgs never copied this feature

Overstaying the welcome of Puzzles/Mechanics/gimmicks and valueing this over main gameplay combat (CrossCode)

"You wish to go there hero? sure, but first do this shitty quest with nothing to do with the story and backtrack here to do it". Fedex quests in RPGs in general are shit

Reputation grinding of any sort (New Vegas, MMOs) is a shitty system to add playtime and encourage grinding

Headshot, no extra damage taken (New Vegas)

Weapon Breaking (BOTW) stupid mechanic

FORCED mascots to pander to women, children and "haha so cute xD" and sell merchandise (Tales of abyss, etc)

The illusion of choice, when your choices don't matter (DA2, any bioware game recently)

The dungeon treasure is used within its dungeon and NEVER AGAIN or rarely ever in the game (Twilight Princess)

Game encourages you to NOT play the game, just do your weekly gear. (FF:IV, WoW, any theme-park MMO)

Can't walk away from talking to an NPC that sounds boring or not important. Chrono Trigger did this and more RPGs should do it. Sometimes I just don't give a shit and wish to continue playing.

Overforgiving platforming removing all challenge (Hat in Time with its 4 midair jumps), but hey! its so cute XD omg game of the year

Retarded party members (KH), Retarded party members that you cannot control (P3)

Pairing up units in nu-fire emblem. Horrible shit mechanic that turned the meta from "who should i train next and send to fight" to "who should i pair with who to max their relationship?" "oh this unit needs xp, whatever just pair him with OP unit and grind in free-DLC map". Nu-fire emblem in general is garbage but holy fuck pairing should've never been a thing

Enemies self-destruct and you get no XP out of it, even though you took the damage and survived (Pokemon)

Boring long animations for attacks without the option to skip animations or turn animations off in RPGs. This is what makes SRW a stale and barebones experience withouts its flashy animations. At least in project x-zone you actually do gameplay and punch the enemy.

shoe-horned forced motion/touch control mechanics because your publisher forced you to use your hardware (Star Fox Zero, Paper Mario Color Splash)

It's even worse when the protagonist is useless, trust me.

>valkyrie profile 2

>alicia deals less damage than any other light warrior, only gains useful attacks at level 40, and they all require the enemy to be standing up for her first attack (a blow to the neck) and then lying on the ground so you can hit him three times with a miniature tornado then lift him with a sword uppercut

>no offensive spells despite having a magic knight stat spread probably because she fuses with three other girls at the end and she does have use for magic, the skill psychosoma (uses both ATK and MAG for all attacks) can somewhat fix this, but it's expensive and needs rare materials to be learned

>her support spells are wholly inferior to any mage or archer in the game

>no exclusive equipment or attacks until you clear the bonus dungeon twice, and even then it's a shitty weak sword (your strongest light sword should have something between 800 and 1200 ATK, this thing has 20 ATK and a skill that you probably already learned) and a shitty leaping attack that doesn't fit with the rest of her moveset

>if you decide to ignore her entirely you're gonna have a hard time once the game decides to take away all your party members and pit alicia against odin thankfully a yandere mage saves your ass once you whittle down half his HP

I'd rather have an overpowered marty stu who only needs a strong sword to murder shit so i can focus entirely on the mandatory loli healer and the second cutest girl in the game.

Inconsistent save points or points of no return

BUT it's of course more complicated.

First point:

I have absolutely no problem for a game to have just a few autosave points if at all, but having 10 saves in the first 1h of the game and then about 2-3 in the rest 4-6h of game is kinda shit. My point is that if I want to play a game that punishes death by reset, maybe tell that to me before I have spent all my points to "Spirit", just to see what it does? It does fucking nothing.

Second point:

Oh boy,

Points of no return

Those are absolutely glorious fucking meta-traps. Most modern games ask you three times before continuing, sometimes hilariously overdoing it by breaking the fourth wall just to make shit absolutely clear: "You cannot go back to the previous areas if you choose "I want to end myself right now". Please confirm by clapping and shouting "Fuck everything". Thank you."

And some games just play a cutscene, that comes literally out of no where, and say: "Ooh, too bad buddy, better play the game again to get all the secrets." Loading next level now, and btw, single save, fuck you.

I genuinely cannot stand the panic mechanic. Watching someone get freaked out that his friend got shot and proceed to throw a grenade at said friend makes something in my head snap. >disproportionate values attached to different actions

>murder gets you -20 points but petting the local dog gets you +1

>you can murder a dozen people and you're still the town darling because you petted the dog 8,500 times

Disconnect between how the main character is presented vs how you can/are encouraged to play them. Best example that comes to mind is watch dogs 2

>marcus and the rest of deadsec are presented unambiguously as the good guys

>every one of your various hacker powers are designed to hurt large numbers of people

>there's a mission to stop a swatter because swatting is vile and wrong

Morality systems written by people with questionable morals. TOR had this issue

>final mission for the jedi consular on tattoine

>3 choices when mission is complete are to turn the knowledge over to the jedi council to be studied, destroy the knowledge, or use it yourself for your own dark side super soldiers

No, it's because metal handles aren't as comfortable as wooden ones, even with leather wrapped around both. It's also cheaper and lighter, not to mention FAR EASIER to carve wood into an ergonomic shape than it is metal the same.

09af46  No.16026614

>>16022979

>I fucking hate unique snowflake swords so much

I fucking hate unique weapons in general because of what they do to the game they are in.

Take Fallout 3\NV\4\Whatever where you can pretty much find a unique version of every weapon that's essentially the same but with a different model and better stats.

Why the fuck would you ever NOT use the unique variant if you can find them easily anyway? And why would you ever switch weapons for something else that's not as effective either? The moment you get a "unique" item, you're pretty much stuck to it because anything else is a downgraded.

In those games, every weapon you find after the unique is either for sell if it's worth something or spare parts for what you have.

If we had no unique weapons, the game could actually take the damn things from your hands and force you to get something else instead. It simply wouldn't matter that your shotgun broke because it's not unique and you can find\buy another one down the road anyway.

There could even be something more interesting with weapons being composed of different parts that they may share with similar weapons, parts that can be broken and replaced individually.

Did you ruined the muzzle of a rifle by over-heating it? Replace it with the muzzle from another gun. Broke the firing chamber? Get another and replace it. Broken blade? Remove it but keep the fancy hilt. Etc.

We could have a more improved repair\crafting mechanic for weapons, we could have actual MacGyver moments jury rigging something on the field, we could be full operator where we must procure supplies and weapons on the field.

Instead what we get is the special snowflake carrier platform in his quest to keep the same guns functioning.

39f907  No.16026690

>>16026614

eh, don't equate the uniques of FO3/4 with New Vegas. Most of FO3/4's "unique" weapons were renamed variants of the base weapons using the exact same model, with a very, very small list of exception. Where as New Vegas had unique variants of every weapon in the game with unique models/textures that were typically hidden in the environment. Some of the unique weapons even had additional features over the original, like the song that plays with the Mysterious Magnum.

Uniques in New Vegas were better only in some respects. You couldn't use weapon mods on a unique weapon, and often fully kitted out base weapons were superior to uniques. Some uniques, like That Gun, had a very small pool of options when it came to repairing weapons. Unique weapons were meant to be rewards for exploration, like finding Knock-Knock in the Camp Searchlight fire station, a location you have no other reason to go to in the middle of radiation town. Uniques in New Vegas are generally not something you just trip over unless you know specifically where they are unlike Deliverer in Fallout 4, which is an early quest reward

Uniques also fit into the games progression system. Don't try implying that all unique weapons are just one step above the highest tier of base weapons in New Vegas. Nelphi's Golf Driver can't even do half the damage of the highest tier weapon in it's category. The unique 9mm pistol Maria does slightly less damage than the base 10mm pistol. And some weapons, like Lil Devil, could only be acquired via purchasing them for insane prices, competing with your need for money for other purposes like augmentation.

I have no fucking idea why games like Mass Effect and InFamous didn't just let you pick good or evil at the start, since you pretty much need to go fully one way or the other or else you suffer penalties. Not to mention doing this lets you work the story out better because you don't have to half-ass everything in case the player only wanted to be evil just that one time.

Because the whole point is to trick you into thinking the game is deeper than it is.

They dealt with shit swords because everyone had shit sword and no metal armor. Japan is so poor for iron they literally couldn't make nails for building. This lead to some ingenious nail less wood working techniques, but it's laughable compared to Europe or even China.

Japanese warfare history was pretty much a 1000 year long hobo phase in any given survival crafting game.

That makes sense. It says a lot if they really are as poor as you say.

They're on a fucking volcanic island with no natural resources and isolated from the rest of the world. Gotta make do with what you have.

What they had was shit iron and pretty much non-existent steel production.

To generalize all their swords as shit is just ignorance and/or your lack of understanding of metallurgy and smithing.

Folded million times meme aside the process does actually allow you to make something usable out of something you'd barely even consider using for iron casting.

Forge welding some of the rare good quality steel they propably bought with other metals to achieve additional properties and combining those in layers to make for an example a sword with a hard edge and a more flexible back is not in any way, shape or form "shit".

The technique of changing what is garbage into weapons is indeed impressive, but the actual quality if said weapon is garbage no matter how hard you try to justify it. Their sword making techniques are amazing, their swords are not. It's equivalent to thar one guy on youtube who makes useable knives out of underwear/flour/plastic. Cool to watch but a normal knife is just better.
