Well there are plenty of zombie shooters where you're just regular joes trying to survive. It would be nice to have more shooters with a contemporary setting, I guess the problem is such games inevitably default to being massacre sims like Postal and plenty of developers find that kind of edgy tone in poor taste.
Are there any shooters that do the Hot Fuzz thing of taking a mundane setting and then twisting it so everyone's out to kill you?

back when postal redux released one of the devs came here to shill and gave out a few keys, I told him I didn't have enough money to spare and I was just gonna pirate it and he replied it was fine as long as I was enjoying the game. I think that's pretty cool tbh.

I think what OP had in mind was a "normal person in mundane setting forced to fight" game.
Only thing that really comes to mind for me is pic related, though that takes place in a somewhat exotic corner of the world.

i know, but halflife seems pretty old, compared to today we have advanced so much in technology in the past 20 years IRL. it is modern but doesnt feel modern, you can tell because every computer device is a bright white/beige colour and even though they have advanced goverment technology it still feels like you where in the 90s.
just look at Black Messa if you want to see how shit HL would be if it was made today, looks like shit and feels like the mid 2000s

I actually loved the shit out of the first borderlands, especially when each of the DLCs had you working for or against one of the major ingame companies, It did a good job at making you feel like a freelance mercenary/bandit.
