You don't pick review sites or individual reviewers based on whether or not they are neutral, you pick them based on how closely their taste aligns with yours.

https://www.oneangrygamer.net/ isn't too bad. I don't care for reviews though, you can get a much better idea by skipping through a gameplay video (and muting the thing because faggots apparently think you want to hear their gay shrieks).

all major review sites are broken out the gate, too many writers, influenced by publishers through indirect bribes, many of the writers are casuals or film/literature flunkies who latch on to concepts of "maturity" and still think japanese media is "too weird". You can find smaller review outlets through stuff like youtube but these guys can't afford to review every game that comes out in one month on an in-depth level.

Modern reviewers can barely complete a game and a game has to be straight up broken and nonfunctional to actually fall below a 7, you will very rarely see a AAA game fall below an 8.5 even if the game has objectively shit design choices or is buggy out the ass because the ads for those games keep these review sites online. They may all be quietly hustled together to keep certain games in the green on metacritic as well, which is why they react like children when people review bomb metacritic, quick to fall back on "THOSE FUCKING GAMERS" arguments.

Search for non-famous youtube reviewers with barely a few thousand views, look at some of their reviews of games you played and see how well they compare to your opinion. Sometimes you find really honest dudes with decent taste. You can find these kind of reviewers most easily if you search for specifically negative reviews of AAA games that are highly praised in media.

Depending on opinion if a single individual or a small team is just stupid. The only opinion that matters is the general opinion of a decent non-pozzed forum. I don't need that anyway, I can tell if I will like the game with 99% certainty just by looking at the cover. Then I look for raw gameplay videos on youtube to make sure, while torrenting the game.

The nature of the game industry is such that you really can't trust any "professional" sources. You're best bet is just reading places like this and watching gameplay to get an overall view of what a game looks like. Or just pirate and see for yourself, but most games aren't even worth that effort.

This is a horrible idea. I knew a guy as a kid who was a few years older and always trying to be edgy, hating on most games. Now, 15 years later I realized I missed out on a few classics because I listened to his opinion. Half of /v/ is basically that guy, while the other half are closet pedos / lolicons / waifufags who only care about the degenerate porn in a game. Just look at a game, see what several sources say, watch gameplay footage and make your own damn opinion. The reason reviews were a thing before was because the internet wasn't. You either got a demo on a demo disc or read a review, there was no third option to get informed about a game. Nowadays reviews are useless.

Yes there are good reviewers but you have to find them yourself. Pick some games that you've played, go to metacritic/youtube etc and have a look at the reviews for those games and you'll eventually find people you either agree with, or people whose opinions you find interesting even if you dont agree with them. It's important to listen to people you don't agree with from time to time.

The third option has always been piracy. But even beyond that, there was shareware - which goes beyond a demo and is more akin to modern episodic games. Games were split into two or three acts - with the entire first act, which itself is pretty much a full game - given away for free. The difference between shareware and the episodic model, is that the full game is available at launch - whereas episodic shit is garbage because you never know if the company making the game is going to go tits up and stop making more episodes, get bored and stop making new episodes, or get bought out and stop making new episodes.

I really would love to see a return to shareware models when you download the full and complete game for free (maybe missing a few key files), and it only lets you play 1/3 of the title unless you decide to purchase the rest - after which it would patch in the remaining files to unlock the rest.

Shit, they could even leave the full bloated size of the full game in as a condition to dis-incentivize you from just playing the first 1/3 and never buying the rest. Nor should they have to alter their games to try to make the first 1/3 into some kind of complete story-arch/experience. Just structure the game as usual and then just hit a kill switch at a certain stage or point in the story.

Of course, publishers would never do that again for the same reason they don't make demos despite it being easier than ever to distribute and keep track of them. They're afraid you'll actually judge the product for yourself and decide you don't want to buy it. They want you to make a snap judgement and impulse buy.

I put it off for a week longer than I would have otherwise just because of the campaign of faggots making shit up about it, like it being too easy, when 6x Draconian modo is a thing available from the beginning that makes it the most satisfying brutal game of the series along with the post game content. That and they'd just shit on it without giving a reason. Felt like Kotaku was shitposting here. The only real problem is the music which can be fixed with a mod, in every other way it's a contender for best JRPG ever.
