Most people simply don't know that the censorship is going on, and take the product at face value as the original artistic vision. So, like that whole Rainbow 6 Siege censorship row that went down awhile back - if the game had originally been released already censored, nobody would have cared. It might not even register subliminally that references to certain topics and ideas and iconography are being phased out of their games. But if you just replaced the model with a big black censor bar that read "Censored because we want to appeal to the Chinese" - the publishers would have some real problems, because it makes the censorship an unmissable, distracting, and would have a significant negative impact on the game. And generally, people are going to side with the creators over the publishers who are just fucking the game up to sell to people who aren't even fans.
The publishers, or platform holders in the case of Sony at least, would never allow that to happen… but it'd be nice to see.

I never played Divinity: Original Sin because of the censorship. With many games you cannot even uncensor them as you may not know what is censored. If a game is release and later censored it's obvious enough, but there's stuff that is going to be censored during development.
When D:OS censored the girl in the artwork the game was not even done yet. Sure, maybe that could be reversed but what else was censored during development because it was "sexist" like the original artwork which was never even heard about. Someone could have designed some armor or a npc then get told "That looks too nice and we don't wanna be sexist, change it"
Even if a game is censored after release and you can easily fix it, all future games made by that company are questionable.

It's more excusable because back then we really couldn't easily find out. It was the era where schoolyard talk was Pikablue, Pokégods, the Mew truck and so on. Things like the Coin Case glitch were just known as a way to make the game all funky and there was none of the insane overanalysis we have today where its exact execution is documented, and abused for arbitrary code execution. English version: outfits uncensored. One small questline changed. And one quest cutscene changed later on to hide a shota lyn getting lacered by monster shadows. That's all I remember that was censored in the whole game. IMO the only bad one is the censored cutscene because it was part of the main story, so it's a shame they changed that, but not enough to make me drop the game over it when everything else was uncensored.
