So I finally got around to starting System Shock 2. How does my mod list look? Followed some old guide any mods you guys would recommend to a new player? I loved Deus Ex with the GMDX that mod really put the game on another level.

<SS1
<the game where the Shock series was started
<was hailed as a classic upon release
<the game that recently had its source code released
<the game that's currently up for a possibly shitty remake
<not relevant
Fucking kill yourself. Play 1 if you want to experience the better game. Play both if you want to see how they differ. Neither of them are terribly long to begin with.
SS2 is only 'relevant" in that it's the beginning of Ken Levine's pretentious meta narrative horseshit that only gets worse in the Bioshit games.

SS1 is okay but a little tedious. SS2 is pretty good but gets way too easy. Play whatever you want, neither of them are classic or must plays unless you want more context for bioshock and prey 2017.

Play them in order, I didn't, it wasn't a good thing. they each have their advantages, I prefer the level design in SS2, and I really like the addition of stats, and the intro is actually better, also the engine is better although for some fucking reason it doesn't use the Thief sound propagation, I prefer the pacing in SS1, the openess of SS1, the soundtrack of SS1 and the upgrades in SS1, overall it's probably the better game.

A definitely shitty remake, it feels nothing like SS1, it doesn't even feel like SS2, and holy fuck that soundtrack.

I'm serious. The puzzles in SS2 are lacklustre and discourage any exploration with near zero backtracking, as comparison to the reactor self destruct, or the mutant virus ejection, or the mining laser destruction mission where exploration and backtracking is key.
I can't remember anything notable about SS2 that left an impression on me other than my guns being broken all the time.

Anon, it's okay to admit you have shit taste, you can sit in your 7 minute cutscene whilst Shodan or the hive monologues to you. Agreed, SS2 wasn't scary, it was boring. SS was scary on reflection? If you looked at the story of being the last survivor on the space station, everyone has been mutated by the AI or turned into cybernetic amalgamations and you're supposed to survive all that, then yeah that's pretty good horror on the idea of AI's being smarter and more powerful than humans without the ethical constants of humanity, ect. but that's if it was a book.
The actual gameplay doesn't feed into the horror aspect of SS at all. So not really a horror game at all.

A friend of mine LOVED that game to the point of obsessively modding it and re-balancing it. He asked me to make a few gun models for it and I did.
His mod is actually pretty nice with QoA and additions. I think I still have it.

IIRC classic System Shock uses the mouse almost entirely for interacting with objects, clicking on them with a mouse cursor like an adventure game. You even click enemies to shoot them. You can rotate your view by dragging the mouse to the edges of the screen, kinda like an RTS game, but it's very cumbersome. Instead you're supposed to move your character and rotate your view with the keyboard only with an awkward control scheme.
Enhanced edition uses standard WASD controls by default and has a toggle bound to E that switches between mouselook and interacting with the world with the mouse cursor. It's very similar to the system used by System Shock 2 and is much more approachable. I tried classic SS in the past and couldn't get into it, yet had no problems with enhanced edition recently even though the UI is still outdated and cumbersome in other ways.
There's a second enhanced edition done by the Doom64EX guy that ports the game to his engine with full hardware rendering. I have no idea how well it works or how true to the original it is because I couldn't find a download for this version of the game anywhere. It's $10 on GoG if anyone wants to take the plunge and upload it for us.

What? I have both Classic & Enhanced editions of system shock on GoG, what do you mean the second enhanced edition? Do you mean the source port?
c0d137 No.15998360
>>15998344
There is another version that came out just last year that was ported by the guy that did Doom64Ex, the Turok ports, and others. Not 100% sure but I believe it's a recreation of the game within his personal engine, not a derivative of the original source code. I don't know how you access it but I think you can get the new port/remake if you own the enhanced edition, as that seemed to be the case on Steam.

To be clear what this means is that Microsoft lets companies sign programs and installers with a unique key that verifies that they were created by the company that owns the key, not some random hacker saying that they're GoG etc. So with GoG games the preference is for the original installers that we know can't have been tampered with, rather than zip archives of the installed folder that could theoretically contain god knows what.
