V-Trigger.

V-Trigger is a new mechanic introduced to SF5 where every character has a red gauge on top of their normal super gauge. When it's full you can activate a character-specific install that buffs some aspect of your character (ex. Abigail gains bigger damage output, more armor on specials and the ability to break armor with his fierce punches, Guile gains the ability to shoot projectiles with his flash kicks or shoot continuous sonic booms one after the other, Mika can summon her wrestling partner to fly in and attack the opponent at an angle of her choice for a free mixup). In theory there's nothing wrong with it but these buffs are so good that they practically break the game and the majority of matches are bullshit V-Trigger comebacks.

Losing player fills V-meter, doesn't die, gets game breaking comeback buff, forces the opponent to guess right once or twice and if he doesn't he loses his life lead and dies.

That is because Fighting games are hard to play and even harder to teach. This is why pro players stick to giving paid lessons or focus more on improving themselves. And if there are any who did any sort of tutorial content like Maximillian once did then they find it unprofitable as it is more easy to just make reaction images.

For the sake of discussion. What would you like in a guide? It being concise and only bringing up essentials or being above one hour long and covering everything?

I'm just wondering why there can't be English equivalent for the Korean Tekken 7 guides, written by pros or people who are good as pros.

There are dozens of these for every character varying in depth including things like frame data, combos, what to press and when etc. It's the reason why I dropped SFV for Tekken 7 as it has a clear path for me to follow and train whereas in English everything's just a clusterfuck of shitty 'guides'.

I have some bad news for you, but Tekken players are some of the dumbest fuckers you will ever meet. Anyone so invested in a counterintuitive game as Tekken (not bad, necessarily, just possessed of big problems) is not concerned with proper documentation or learning things the right way.

From my little time with the game, Tekken seemed to embody the phrase "if you don't know how to punish it, it's not punishable," and I don't count 10 damage off of a 1, 2 as a punish. It throws so much bullshit at you and demands incredibly specific answers (i10 vs i11 vs i12 punishers, from crouching, from standing, from rising states) unless you abuse Korean backdashing to make moves whiff.

It's the same phenomenon as anime games attracting people who know how to do minute-long combos and memorize every gimmick in the book, but who can't play footsies to save their lives.

If you ask me as a fighting game scrub I've only played skullgirls, under night, arcana hearts 3, and rev 2 demo. The problem is the lack of an in game tutorial for some games and having to deal with getting beaten by players online. Once you get past this you'll start to improve. I'm still a scrub thought because I haven't played any fighting games in a while on top of by brother being a ps4 hog.

Not a Raphael player, but by "lag" I assume you mean a frame disadvantage, negative on block. If you are looking for an offensive follow up, it would sound like your only options are to do whatever your fastest poke would be in an attempt to still be faster than the opponent, or maybe attempt a throw if they are in range for that (sorry I don't know more about the situation you are describing). More realistically, doing a Guard Impact is likely your best bet for stealing a turn and resuming your attacks, especially since with how fast Raphael is, opponents are probably going to be desperate to get in any attack they can immediately, which makes them predictable. Also Reversal Edge is probably an option.

Funnily enough, I recently saw a video where Gootecks of all fucking people did the math and estimated it would take a player ~2,000 wins to earn enough fight money for a new character. If you wear the kike costumes, you can cut it down to around 1,800. Don't care to double check the numbers, but there is this 2-year-old math which estimated 3 months of grinding to get one season's worth of shit characters and bad costumes.

Now updates are free and a new character costs 10% of the original price. What I do mind is stuff like Smash Ultimate where 90% of the roster is locked when you start the game up and you have to grind nonstop to get the characters you want. Or Central Fiction where you have to complete a really boring story mode to get Susanoo (although you can also just change a setting and get him immediately from what I'd read so I guess I just wasted my time)

Depends on the game. DBFZ had Android 21 only available once you beat the story mode, and GGXrd Revelator had Raven be unlockable with an afternoon's worth of in-game currency.

Most games have DLC, though. DBFZ famously had a season pass announced before the game's release date was announced. BBTAG is notorious given how ArcSys tried to jew customers dry, Tekken 7's season passes and updates destroyed the older versions of the game (same is true of KI, although that game was at least more transparent about being a service), and MvCi failed in no small part due to its disgusting DLC practices.

Well why are or should characters be unlockables in fighting games? From a design perspective, it seems to really only be there to give a sense of reward to the player or increase longevity. However, instead of using the character you might actually want, you will have to use other characters. This could be done to force the player to use more simple characters before they use the gimmicky/difficult ones. With games like Arcana Heart 3 Love Max, I have all characters and colors unlocked from the start. The only real unlockables are side stories for characters which are visual novels sections with battles. Also lewd CGs.

Rage Explosion stops time, gives you a ton of stamina, breaks combos, and increases your attack for a great deal of time. However, it permanently removes your meter for the rest of the match. If an opponent has built up a ton of meditation to slow down time, you can use this to insti-kill them as well. Of course, these aren't easy to hit.

Definitely one of the best Burst systems I've seen in a fighter. It can be used offensively, defensively, and in neutral. You can use it to extend combos, make yourself temporarily invincible to avoid attacks and gain meter, or burst out of combos. Using supers increases the regen rate of the burst and a universal 2 meter super automatically gives you more burst back. The game also has a pushblock system where you use one bar. However, if you have less health than the opponent, it's free.

Megacrush was the game's burst. But unlike other burst systems, it relied on your precious meter. There's also the Baroque system which used red health to cancel combos, deal extra damage based on how much health you sacrificed, and even created unblockable situations.

At half health you get access to super launchers and ultras. Nearly every ultra in the game is a mid punch and is terribly easy to react to. Unless you have some perfect read, you'll have to combo into them. Even then, they only work once. Super launchers can work indefinitely and help people used optimized juggle combos against heavy characters. Both of these tool only give you more options at low health and both of them require you to make good reads or risk getting held (countered).

All that aside. I hate the Ultra system in SF4. Until SF4U, these things did tons of damage and a good deal of them were invincible on start up while requiring no skill to use. It just gave the player a "Fuck You" button. Later, the made them more viable allowing you to combo into them. The damage was scaled down too. Healing is still absurd. MvC3's X-Factor and DBFZ's Sparking are still some of the lamest I've seen. They don't add that much to how you play besides making you a stronger punching bag. Sparking does allow for some ToD combos and a buffed vanishing but not much else.

I especially hated the body type that every male character had in Mortal Kombat 9; it looked retarded.

Another thing: the graphics could be much better in these games than they are. Fighting games, because they have so much less to render, used to be the prettiest games, but now I see tons of larger games that put them to shame. And why the fuck has no fighting game implemented visible damage like Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus did 15 or so years ago?

The difference here is that Elder Scrolls relies on stats, items, and other various mechanics to expand your character, role, or playstyle. That's not the case with fighting games. Fighting games relies completely on skill as your progression. It's all organic instead of a mechanical progression. The player improves instead of the character inside the game. At the start you're doing small combos and basic tricks. Later on you are doing longer, complex combos and constantly switching tactics depending on the situation. Sometimes implementing strategies that counters another strategy that countered your original playstyle. Your "endgame" is solely determined by how much you want to raise your skill ceiling.

My problem is the base of all the SFV music, which I don't think is a musical term and I'm not a /mu/fag but let me explain. In Third Strike, your base for the music was that sweet fast paced drums in the background that allowed for all sorts of sick music to happen. In Mega Man X5 they really liked a certain synth and guitar tone to most of their music.

In SFV your base for the music is that fucking god awful WUB WUB WUUUUUUB that you find in every single EDM track nowadays that feels like you're meant to hurt your ears listening to. To add to >>15950698 's recommend of Fightcade, I think Super SF2 Turbo, SamSho2, SamShoVSp, VSav, and KOF98 are all great places to start for older games. Definitely try out other stuff though, there's a lot of really fun games outside of the popular ones on Fightcade, especially if you can get someone to play them with you irl.

If you're serious about getting into fightan, Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[ST] and Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 both offer great tutorials and fairly large communities for a niche subgenre in the niche genre of fightan. Rev 2 is somewhat old and Gear is getting a new version sometime this year, so it is cheaper nowadays but both are great games. UNIST is also made by the same people as Melty Blood, though it plays very differently.

Buckle up bucko. You're in for a wild ride.

The core of SoulCalibur is still there, so it's still enjoyable at all levels. GI no longer costs meter so all is well right? Not really. The stuff they've put on top of the classic system isn't so hot in my eyes. It almost dilutes the system to a trivial degree.

Meter by itself is no real problem. You smack the ever loving shit out of your opponent, you block or you get and you gain meter to varying degrees. All is well. You can earn two bars of meter, each composed of 4 quarters. You can burn 1/4th of your meter to use EX moves that cost meter or expunge one whole bar on either a super or a soul charge. Problem is gaining super meter is a chore in this game. You can wail on your opponent all you want but, even if you do win the game, by knock out no less, you might not come away with even one full bar of meter. However, if you suck donkey dick, you'll gain a free bar of meter when you're one round away from losing. This applies to both players, i.e. if the bonus meter has been awarded to one player going down 2-0, it will be awarded to the second player if they can bring the game to 2-2. If having your ass kicked sounds like a slow and boring way of gaining meter, there is a faster way, other than playing well, to gain some meter…

Reversal edge is that mechanic. For pretty much everyone you press two buttons an your character's weapon flashes white and, from that moment on, you're impervious to almost all damage. Press those two buttons and you will munch through nearly everything your opponent has. If you hit, you gain HALF A BAR OF SUPER and you force them into a rock-paper-scissors game. It's obvious to see that this balancing of meter was done to encourage this; you gain pittance for playing normally, but you gain big when you go for the reversal edge. You want that meter so you can do more things but playing normally isn't going to get you that meter.

When a reversal edge hits, it's RPS. There's quite a few different rocks, papers and scissors to choose from, but not nearly as many as there are in normal play. You can use a horizontal slash, a vertical slash, a kick, go forwards, backwards, sidestep or just hold guard. This all sounds fine, but all this could be accomplished, with far more options for both players to choose from might I add, through normal play. Why does it exist? To generate hype moments so that they can be clipped and used to advertise the game? To appeal to casual players who might not care for the intricacies of the normal system? Who knows and who cares? All I care about is that it slows the game down so much you could fetch yourself a drink before the normal game resumed.

To avoid it, you can either block a low charge version, GI the move, counter or clash with it, hit it with a guard breaking move or, and this is the preferred method, just walk around it. Since it can be charged to break guards, you might get hit trying to guard it or GI it. You want to counter or clash with it? Good luck. You want to hit it with a guard break move? All your opponent has to do is let it rip and your grand idea is up in flames, unless you had a hard read on it and you did it preemptively. Walking around it is simply the best option. Regardless of how long they charge it for, if you start walking around it and keep walking around it until it eventually whiffs, you will avoid it. I guess it's fun to make your opponent eat shit for trying such a stunt but it gets old fast.

Soul Charge might as well be V-Trigger. Only difference is it doesn't function as a roman cancel in combos. If you're feeling the pressure, you can pretty much throw out a soul charge and boom, you've knocked the opponent back and got some more powerful moves at almost no risk to yourself.

While you're in this mode, your meter will change to a lighter color and it'll start draining too. Get hit and chunks of it will be taken out. Block and it will stop draining for a second and I think that's quite nice. If you're being stupid and getting hit, you lose your precious soul charge. You play smart and block your opponent's stupid moves and you don't lose a thing. If nothing else it encourages you to not mash like a moron when you have it.

Supers are supers and there is no difference in application for them. You can use it as a reversal but you're probably not gonna get very far with that as you can be poked out of it. In my experience, I've only poked someone out of soul charge once. For supers, I lost count. Since using them as a reversal isn't wise, you're more than likely gonna use them for whiff punishing or combos.

Problem is almost everyone's super functions in exactly the same way. If you hit someone with one super, you've hit nearly everyone's super. I think Astaroth and Kilik in soul charge are the only ones that are actually different (they are command grabs) but other than that, the only changes you're gonna be seeing are animation changes.

Also god forbid you ever land one at the end of the round. All the super animations are insanely long and, if you end a round with one, the animation is extended even longer. There is no way to skip this, no way to speed it up, nothing. Just sit there and watch the movie. At the very least you can skip the replays.

The shittest mechanic by far is reverse rage, guts, yellow health, whatever you call it, it's hot garbage and it's by far the worst carry over from SoulCalibur V. You get your ass positively creamed and suddenly, when your health bar depletes past a certain point marked on the health bar, moves below a damage threshold stop doing as much damage as they should. I think the damage threshold is 20 but abhor this so much I'm not even bothered to check. Why is this still here? Why didn't it go in the garbage with the shitty roster and GI costing meter? All it does is force the winning player to take necessary risks in order to seal the deal. You like to poke at your opponent at close range with lightning fast pokes? Better think of something else quick because that strategy's suddenly become less effective. Like to keep your opponent out with your big stick? Better gamble it all soon son; now that stick isn't doing so good. What garbage.

There's also shit like Denuvo, season passes announced before the game was even out, Tira being day one DLC and some quality of life features not being present, but shit man, the shit they've tacked on top of the classic formula really gets to me, especially yellow health. Fuck that shit.

Not much of a fighting game fag but these points I really do have to agree with.

To me it seems entirely bizarre that the flashiest move any character is capable of only requires a single button press provided you fill up some arbitrary meter.

Reversal edge is meh, I could take it or leave it. That you interrupt gameplay with some wonky rock paper scissor shite is a very strange design decision for a an otherwise fast paced fighting game with rounds that typically conclude in less than half a minute but at least in the single player mode (which is what I play and enjoy) there are other mechanics tied to it.

What I like is the three dimensional movement and delineation between horizontal and vertical attacks, what I dislike is almost all attacks are mid with high/low pretty much only being useful to the input-reading AI. Feels like there's plenty of room to create moves with the (theoretical) freedom afforded to players but in any given fight you'll just be spamming the same 2-3 combos until you win.

Also the character creator is excellent, do any other fighting games feature something similar?

Aside from Mugen, Tekken games traditionally have lots of customization, but you're pasting stuff onto existing characters rather than creating them. You could play SCIV or SCV for their character creator modes, but they're pretty similar to SCVI.

Which is sad because GG used to be a lot more fun to watch when people would throw out supers and the most intrusive ones were moves like Faust's Kancho which I will never not love.

In general, the shifting of the camera in a fighting game is something I don't think any dev should do as it breaks the continuity of the fight. So all these zoom ins, cuts, and whatnot aren't fun to sit and watch. I know people complain about the unskippable cinematics for summoning espers in final fantasy games, but for a fighting game it's even worse to have to sit back and watch a 10 second super only to get dropped back onto the stage with a wet fart if the move didn't kill.

At best I think cinematics should be reserved for moves that will end the match since there's not much else to do. And even then length is still an issue as Blazblue has a problem with some particularly lengthy and boring Astral Finishers.

I really like most of the character designs, they largely went back to the original style of the first game since this is supposed to be a prequel to SCII. "Tacky, overdesigned" is what you would describe IV and V as being, not this. Kilik looks almost exactly like he did in 1. Groh looks fucking stupid though.

DLC characters is the norm for the entire industry sadly, I can't find myself bitching about it anymore because it's not like it will change anything at this rate. Tira is currently considered bottom tier in the game, so saying she was finished seems questionable in some regards. Her lethal hit options are a complete joke compared to other characters, like they haven't implemented them all yet.

Denuvo does suck, I hope they remove it later, but I'm not holding my breath.

Anyone still bitching about this is strictly in the "git gud" pile. The few times I do run into a player that insists on spamming it constantly, all they ever do is eat shit from me. If I'm just blocking/neutral and they start a RE, I side step, launch, and combo their ass. If for some reason their RE spam is timed well enough that it catches me repeatedly, I start pounding them with break attacks. This is especially effective if I'm using A+B on them as it rewards me with a lethal hit and free combo. Furthermore, there are some attacks in the game that are not break attacks but still counter a RE attempt, like Kilik's Monument~ABK. He also has moves like 6A+B that after each hit has been countered by RE, he is offered a moment to sidestep, launch, and combo.

Spam is predictability, and predictability is punishment.

The Critical Edges are fine, it's easy to bait them out of people trying to use it as an "I win" button, and some of them are even launch punishable to really make it fun to teach them a lesson for using them poorly. The animation sequence is prime entertainment when killing rage quitters, oh so many delicious disconnects during Kilik's SC CE have been had. Also sometimes if I'm getting slapped around and then get hit by a CE, that extra time watching it happen has been enough of a moment for me to focus and formulate a new plan to come back and win.

That was never stated, all the detail that was given was that Shadaloo was responsible. That may be the case, given their rival battle in SFIV, but going by how she behaves in SFV it seems unlikely and that rival battle in SFIV could easily be explained as Juri just trying to piss her off, which she has done on multiple occasions. Not that Im trying to defend the horribly shoddy handling of Juri's character in SFV, I've just already thought of the possibility of Cammy being her parents murderer and honestly would've been a better way to handle Juri's story arc instead of whatever she's supposed to be doing in SFV by all of a sudden teaming up with her for no damn reason.

Yup, she drives in on a motor-tricycle and picks up Cammy and Decapre after Cammy fights with some hue cops who want to take Decapre in. No real context is given to it and just seems like they felt that no one would care what Juri was doing so long as she got screen time. They did this with Alex and Necalli as well. But its honestly disgusting to me how they treated Juri specifically in SFV, especially after constructing such a good backstory for her in SFIV.

I liked the music for T5 and T6, pretty eclectic with lots of memorable tunes.

For recent stuff, FEXL got that SFEX goodness but SNK Heroines is my favorite, people are mostly familiar with the character theme remixes but the stages have their own themes and they're pretty good, it's like every track is Fanatic Waltz.

DBFZ was kinda forgettable and I've no clue how the SC6 one sounds but as with other aspects of the series, I think the quality of the soundtrack kinda deteriorated as the series progressed. tfw we'll never have another Khan Super Session

Ironically Scorpion isn't that much of a big character in its story, he's just some jap whose only motivation was "muh revenge", and being used by the actual villains; Then he eventually makes buddies with Sub after all those misunderstandings despite already being turned cyborg in that timeline, then dying and takes care of Kenshi's son, and even he has more relevance in the story. Not to mention the game only has 2 new characters and a large chunk of the cast has designs caried over from the previous game. DOA5 is nearly 10 years old how is the sequel so lacking in new content and features. A fan asks whether the PS4 version will be censored, and Shimbori says he cannot answer yet.

Every time he says something that he gets backlash for, he claims he was misunderstood or mistranslated. We know often how stuff like this happens in the media, but with over a dozen articles of all of his different statements given over the time (he has spoken in A LOT of interviews) say the same thing the defense of being "misunderstood" wears thin. Worse yet, people claim that certain early articles about the reduction of fanservice were a "mistranslation" but conveniently never provide a counter translation of what it actually is, similar here to how Shimbori claims there was a misunderstanding but can't really provide any further details of what is actually being misunderstood. Doesn't help that compilations of DOA5LR show that the destruction has indeed been toned down anyway, regardless of reasoning.

This is exactly what he did with his E-Sports comment. In the beginning, the major component to DOA6's change of direction was specifically him naming E-sports, and even directly talked about a time during a tournament where people found the game embarrassing due to the outfits. Despite dropping such a direct event, since that interview aired he backpedaled from it hard multiple times in damage control. He keeps doing it so it's hard to know what he's even talking about.

Shimbori is a PR Disaster.

So I read the OAG article on his response and he uses that word "expression" again when asked if the destruction was toned down to meet global standards. So it is pretty clear that shit was toned down because of Sony. He was caught on the spot in an interview and could not say it was because of Sony because that goes against their NDA. So he made something up that would make him look like a good boy. Then since the interview was again with a Taiwanese outlet he could just say he was mistranslated again like when he announced the thing. Shimbori is not only a censorious scumbag he is also too much of a coward to stand by his decisions. I hope he gets fucking fired when the game bombs. I also hope the Switch version of DOAX3 outsells DOA6.

At least they are kind enough to put arrows on the page so you can get a general idea of buffs and nerfs.

Tira, Taki, Talim, Kilik, Astaroth, Zasalamel, and Geralt are all either pure buffs or almost entirely buffs. Raphael and 2B lean heavily on the nerf side. Everyone else is pretty much a mixed bag, but stuff like Maxi is a small mixed bag but Azwel is a huge mixed bag of changes.
