I don't get this sentiment. Most of the vidya I play is nearly a decade old or more, and usually has hacks or modifications on top of it. Vidya has been stuck in the Hollywood Zone for years now, with most stuff being released for the sole purpose of money and nothing else. For the vast majority of games there's no passion and the only selling point, if you can even call it that, would be graphics (even though a good artstyle is objectively better than any shit your lens flare and blur abusing wannabe-directors can shit out, any day). If you play spiderman, you'll see that the last fucking thing on their mind was gameplay. Video games are no longer about gameplay, they're about "cinematic experiences" because the same people that have been shitting out hollywood movie after movie to the shit eating public and raking in the cash are now in the business of video games. Granted, you do get the occasional diamond in the rough like La Maluna, most games are going to be bad nowadays because metric fucktons of money are in the business and nobody wants to take a risk. Just play old games you dumb cunt. On a side note, do not buy anything from Sony and encourage friends and family to follow suit. This is by far the easiest way you can induce change in a corporation.

Something to consider about this news is how many games the average Japanese video game developer plays, and how a minority of those will be from Western sources, if any. As the article mentions, some developers might take months to complete a single game (especially a large one like RDR2), and some chose games from last year because they hadn't played all/many of 2018's offerings.

I'm startled, but not surprised to see so many developers like Spider-Man PS4. Think about it from their perspectives:

>lots of polish, like the famous conversations that switch dialogue lines from casual to exerted depending on whether the player is swinging or not

>don't pay attention to downgrades because they're focused on their own games, or are perhaps more forgiving of them due to their positions in development

I feel the same way, but you need to have a different perspective (unless you're actually dumb enough to join a hobby for its future instead of its present and past, but that's a separate issue). Until I was burnt very badly by Bioshock Infinite in 2013, I basically never played old games because my standards were so low I had no reason to go to the trouble of configuring an emulator, finding the ROMs, etc.

Now, I can devote more time to finding old games and playing old games when I'm not busy, of course and appreciating each one. Before I realized how bad AAA games are, I was always on the lookout for the next one, and I spent so much time in the cycle of hype, intake, and cursory experience that I could hardly be said to play any of the games I bought.

Think of it this way: there are hundreds of old, diamond-level games that I was "too busy" to play because of the new hotness. By checking out of the industry as a whole, I no longer need to worry about "not keeping up with the Joneses."

In the same way we tend to gravitate towards their games because of how different they are, the average japanese casual tends to like western made games because for them the "japanese game feel" is common. I'd say devs are worse then casuals in some ways. I remember seeing an interview with Yu Suzuki before Virtua Fighter 3 tb came out asking him what games he plays and his answer was "non" not even his own. and that was a common response for japanese devs during the 90's, they either never played video games before the got into the industry or they stopped playing games once they did and i'm betting it's the same now, it wouldn't surprise me if most of the devs on that list had only played some of those games at trade shows or company events. and they likely didn't want to admit to playing some 2 year old phone game on the train or at lunch for most of the year.

I'd suggest starting with O'grady et al's book. It is a great summary of all the contemporary linguistic fields ranging from Syntax to Psycholinguistics to animal language. Now bear in mind, when one says linguistics, generally it refers to Theoretical Linguistics (also called General Linguistics), and Applied Linguistics.

Applied linguistics should have been the application of the theories (structure of the language etc) and how you could teach them, but sadly most faggots are using AL just to teach stupid shit such as why does a nigger speak differently from a white trash and other sociology bullshit that has nothing to do with linguistics.

Theoretical linguistics on the other hand mainly deal with the structure of the language (syntax, morphology, phonology, semantics) and how to describe them in formal terms, like math. This is where the current bread and butter is at and where you can increase your linguistic awareness in order to understand languages better and easier. I'll explain more in a bit.

Once you skimmed or read O'grady's book, choose what you like:

Syntax: the structure of phrases in sentences. This will explain to you why there are language like English that has the structure Subject Verb Object, while Japanese has S-O-V, Arabic V-S-O, and so on. You will also study about agreement (like English, where if the subject is in 3rd person, singular, and the tense is the present, you get /s/ of agreement).

Morphology: you will study the structure of words. The unit of morphology is the morpheme, which is in summary the smallest unit of meaning. See the verb in Japanese:

Taberareteiru contains 4 morphemes, each of which is lexicalized differently by each language (see how I tried to use is being eaten to translate it).

Phonology and Phonetics: Phonology is how the systematic rules of sound apply in a language, like how a becomes an when it is followed by a vowel. Thus the following rule:

Phonetics, on the other hand, is about the physics of the sound and how your oral box produces sounds (b sound is via the lips, t is from the alveolar, k g are produced from the velar, etc etc) and the two are very related.

In reality, it is a long term investment. Reading the books that I linked (and not to mention delving later into the theories themselves) will take you a tremendous amount of time. But, it will benefit you greatly if you want to be a polyglot.

For example, by understanding the linguistic levels of languages, it will be easier for you to acquire similar languages. Japanese, Korean and Turkish are very, very similar. They all have the basic S-O-V word order, they are all morphologically agglunitive languages (meaning that unlike Latin where some morphemes might mix a lot of functions, like -as for feminine, singular and nominative meaning), these languages usually express these semantic features (gender, number, and case) morpheme by morpheme.

In Japanese phonology, there is a constraint on codas (the consonants after a vowel), so a word like system (two syllables, sis.tem), will become four syllables si.su.te.mu, because of the said constraint on Japanese CVC syllable structure (thus is why Japanese is predominately CV.CV.CV.CV language). If you want more reason of why you should learn deeper into morphology, you will find some interesting things. For example, there is this metric that is called the mora. A syllable may contain 1 or 2 moras. A syllable is a mora, and if it has a coda, then that syllable contains 2 moras. Ok, why the fuck does moras matter? Because Japanese usually contract names by having two moras. For example, personal computer is pa-so-na ko-n-pyu-ta (moras are split) become pa-so-ko-n, the contraction is 4 moras. Some form of Japanese poetry contains a constraint of 17? moras, I think? And so on.

If all of this sounds too fucking much of a time sink (which it is), just learn Japanese by memorization then. Otherwise, linguistics is a very great long investment into polyglothood.

Lastly, if you want a case study of how linguistics can be great in order to understand language better and form rules quickly instead of parroting it, take the comparative-superlative forms of adjectives in the languages of the world. In Bobaljik's book, he explored hundreds or so of languages and found that whenever a language wanted to build the comparative form of the adjectives, it required the A. And the superlative form required adj-comparative form, just like a nesting. This Containment Hypothesis expends into other things in language.

Pavel Caha's 2009 Phd. dissertation explored the cases of the languages of the world (case is the morpheme that marks the function of the noun). For example, in Japanese:

ga=nominatve (subject function)

o=accusative (object function)

Caha found that just like adjectives, case is built one at a timer (genitive contains the accusative, accusative contains the nominative, etc).
