Is the private server community really this autistic?

I'm rolling on it, but after doing some digging apparently one of the GMs (kutsal) is a turkroach and another (narilrave) is a hebrew-speaking kike, so world chat probably won't be as fun as Chink's Hope or Cucknos since they'll probably be more censor-happy.

Is Sunwell dead yet? I played there, got to Outlands ahead of almost everyone and realized that almost one in every three mob had a broken skill or flat out didn't work. Wraith demons summoning infernals instead of fire path, worms not aggroing unless you spend 15 seconds on top of them, zangar rays starting with mana and casting mana drain on classes with no mana, nagrand ogre mages not having any mana and not using abilities, etc, etc, etc. And 1/3 isn't an hyperbole. Dungeons were even worse. Mobs in Mana-Tombs were fighting each other. 100% scripted with paid shills who did private testing saying everything worked fine! With how bad this shitty server was and with Ares dying in months, I'm less than excited about this server. After all, Sunwell had a (apparently) super stable and high quality WotLK server.

There's not that many on beta right now, but I've messed around a bit and it seems solid. I haven't done any lowlevel stuff though, just some 70 stuff plus a run through ZF to see if the staircase event is working (it was).

It's not perfect and their bugtracker shows that, but even if it was released two weeks ago it'd have been leagues better than the dumpster fire that was sunwell.

You just need to download the game client of the version you're going to be playing. Most pserver sites will offer links to download the game client - there's no separate 'private server version' of the client, though. Only thing you need to do is edit the realmlist.wtf file to include the pserver's realm instead of the blizzard one; most sites will have instructions for this as well.

This was such a retarded decision on their part, they should have just permanently merged some low-medium pop servers instead.

I made so many acquaintances through levelling back in the day. You'd group up to take down an elite and maybe part ways. Then you'd randomly run into them a bit later and greet them, perhaps just some small talk or decide to do a few quests again. Some enemy faction players could be around so you watch each others backs to stay safer on PvP realms, or give build suggestions due to having a higher level of the class the other is playing.

The community just felt really close and comfy. Sharding (and to some extent zone instancing which happened as early as WotLK) destroyed all incentive to befriend random players.

From what I recall of TBC (PvP) was resto druids being unkillable and able to escape any situation, SL/SL warlocks being unkillable while slowly killing you and haemorrhage rogues decimating anything besides arms warriors whilst SL/SL warlocks were rather evenly matched with the rogue and neither would really want to initiate because it became such a long drawn out combat initiation.

I don't know, what else was strong? Enhance shaman was fun to twink with at low-medium levels but became sort of trash later because shit mobility.

Arms was pretty strong especially with MS but I've always hated playing warriors.

Hunters were good on paper and at earlier levels but got shit on by the sustain of warlocks, burst and stunlock of rogues and tankiness and burst of warriors.

Oh yeah completely forgot to bring up LFG. Used to be that you valued other players because if you found a decent one you'd have an easier time forming groups in the future. So you tried to befriend them and often formed bonds through repeatedly playing with them even if at first it was just out of convenience.

Nowadays it's more inconvenient to make friends than to immediately leave the group and rejoin the LFG queue.

I believe the LFG system whilst cancerous on its own, truly killed any sense of community when they implemented sharding alongside it.

If you were only matched with people from your server, there'd be at least some incentive to befriend other players and you would more often be matched with the same people.

I recall making many friends just because we were levelling at roughly the same pace and would find ourselves in the same dungeon groups at random, and we'd become increasingly friendly with each other every time it happened until we added each other.

They were really hard to kill and just kept debuffing you with shadow word: pain while running in circles with retarded amounts of sustain. If I could catch them off-guard (played a lot of rogue) with their shield down and stunlocked them and used vanish offensively to garrotte silence them I'd try killing them but if my combo failed I'd just run away and leave them alone (same with SL/SL warlocks).

Restoration was discount restoration druid, elementalism was one of the weakest casters and enhancement were one of the weakest melee classes (for both PvP and PvE).

Restoration was arguably fine in both PvP and PvE but there was no reason to choose them over other higher tier healers in PvP. In PvE all Shamans were good for was totems, which were inconsequential in PvP. Their best position was probably as off-healers in raids (don't lose DPS by having Enhancement or Elementalist but still gain totem buffs, and chain heal was solid AoE heal.

It was pretty bad. I met one or two super raid geared balance druids (but of course their main spec was resto) that did extremely well.

They arguably shined in PvP (though not very brightly). In 5-mans they could deal with the mana issues whilst slowing down the group with drinking between fights but their overall dps still suffered because of sub-par trash clear even though their single target was solid. In raids like I stated they just couldn't keep up their mana pool in the prolonged boss fights unless they vastly outgeared it.

Actually I have some fond memories of world PvP'ing with Moonkin. All their cast-time spells were shit but you could moonfire and insect swarm people to death while running around in travel form. If they caught up you turn into bear form, stun them, heal yourself and run away in travel form to then reaply your debuffs.

More info about the server I've found out:

First, you won't be able to have both horde and ally chars on the same account. You can create new accounts for other chars, though.

Multiboxing is completely disallowed.

All the vanilla dungeons up to (and possibly including) BRD have been tested in the early beta phases and are working fine. The parts of DME and Scholo required for the pally/lock mount quests, respectively, are also apparently working; the rest of the post-BRD vanilla dungeons and raids are not thoroughly tested, though, so might be broken. They said this was to focus more time on Outlands content testing, since during those levels you'd head to outlands most likely.

The itemization on release is 2.0 stats on gear (progressing to later stats at a later date), and the dungeons/raids are pre-nerf.

Yeah the dps focused class feels really useful when you're not brought for your damage but for your combat resurrection and totems or your blessings and to some extent aura.

They were nice for the raid as a whole but felt really unrewarding to play as you were only there to improve everyone else's performance.

The best spot for a shaman was off-healer, you'd get combat ress and the most vital totems but also a solid AoE healer. If you had one of these, you didn't really care for an Enha or Ele Shaman and would prefer something else.

Similar with Paladin, holy was okay as main healer (IIRC?) and protection for off-tanks. This already covers 2 blessings and 2 auras. You don't really want a retribution paladin ontop of that over something that can provide more dps.

TBC dungeons were less about WotLK (and following xpacs) style of scripted events and more about having impeccable pulling, CC, tanking, healing and DPSing. Playing your class and your role well mattered a lot more than having great gear. Karazhan was one of the best raids in WoW (up until I quit, at least) and everything about it was great. Tier 5 was kind of OK, none of the fights were bad, but none were great. Hyjal was trash. Fuck Hyjal. BT was decent but it had a lot of trash. Sunwell was amazing and the difficulty was just right. The PvP sucked because of flying mounts/arena/resilience/Druids/RNG resist talents. Daily quests meant money overflow so you didn't have to farm Dire Maul endlessly and also served as limited world PvP hubs.

Problem is that guilds on private servers, especially vanilla private servers, are fixated on the idea of going full retard with consumables and world buffs and whatnot. Back in vanilla retail, you showed up to raids with cheap mana pots, had some major mana pots if the attempt was going well, maybe a few elixirs if the raid was close to killing the boss. Tanks had flask for first kills and maybe the first 2-3 weeks of farm, and the flasks were a guild effort. Most guilds raided 2-4 times a week for 3-5 hours a night, a little more during progress and a little less during farm. Now on private servers guilds seem to want to raid 4-5 days a week for 5-6 hours a night and want all their players to be flasked and elixir'd up for trash so they can speed clear. Guess they don't realize that asking 40 people to farm 5+ hours a week to save 1 hour of raid time is moronic.

There has been massive outcry against sharding which Blizzard has summarily ignored in the name of creating a "smooth experience", completely missing the point that Blizzard's idea of QoL is what killed the game in the first place. Also Horde retlols could be downright OP at PVE thanks to the Seal of Blood. Enhancement shamans were great for tots + bl/heroism and did decent dps as well. At T6 content Surv tended to outperform BM & MM, but even if your huntards did not want to switch at least 1 Surv was good idea because of the buffs it gave to raid. Also with Sunwell Arcane mage was viable alternative to Fire since it did not generate nowhere as much threat with only slightly less DPS if the mage knew how to play their class.

Also enjoyed camping the underwater murloc ruins near grom'gol on my UD mage and just chain polymorphing/novaing allies when they needed to get back up for air and watching them desperately try to reach the surface as they suffocated. Excellent point. On that subject, I need help finding a mod I used back in TBC. It was a super simple mod that came out near the end of the expansion, all it did was create a small rectangular box with the acronyms of the most important debuffs a raid mob needed to have up, letters were red when the buff wasn't up and green when it was up. It's the latter, mixed in with a bit of the former for me. It's a lot more satisfying to noticeably piss off another player than any achievement is. If an item of quality drops, I feel satisfaction because of the anticipation of all the ways in which I could be using it to ruin someone's day and amuse myself. If a player is of a particular faggot variety, it's even more satisfying to shit on them.

However, it's not all just about being a dick for me. I gladly help cool people as well if I find myself in such a situation. That sometimes means just helping someone that's about to die who saw me quest earlier and didn't frantically tag the mobs around me just to get his progress done faster. Sometimes it could also mean teaming up with an unpredictable ally. At one point, I was on the King Mukla questline in stranglethorn, playing on my orc shammy. I was underleveled and nobody else was on that far off island at the time. I tried aggroing it on my own and when it proved to be too strong, I tried to just kite it with frost shocks and slowly wear it down just with those. It was still too strong but before I died, a human mage showed up and tried to help instead of killing me. We were kind of successful but I ran out of mana due to the long, tiresome kite I had to do on my own so the monkey killed me and nearly killed the mage but she escaped. Eventually, we worked out a tactic where I'd earth shock the monkey to get aggro and kite it far away from the mage while she'd be spamming frostbolts. When she got aggro, I'd just follow the monkey, meleeing it and earth shock again before it reached the mage. When she ran out of mana, I'd frost shock kite until she was done evocating/regening and I'd try to use as few shocks as possible to conserve my mana so that it was available while the mage was regening hers. We got a kill and the one that got it waited for the respawn with the one that didn't until we both completed the quest.

I suppose it's about meaningful interactions for me and winning a sort of battle of wits by using the game mechanics to beat another person in some way feels quite meaningful and so is teaming up by communicating only through /emotes and perfecting a working tactic to defeat a particular foe. You could argue that raiding offers some of the latter but for me it's too predictable since everyone's done it a million times already. When you're following guides and walkthroughs to play the game, it's no longer engaging or really meaningful. It feels more like an office job.

The only time he screwed up a little bit was on light's hope, but I can't even blame him for that. "People"(I dont consider swedes people) were being down right nasty to him over a ring that was looted to a guildy over a pub from a chest(chests were FFA loot on Light's Hope). The guild on gummies was really good and there was no drama except from Eli/Wiht who were upset over the shit in the screenshots above. Theres a reason why no girls rules should be strictly enforced. The only reason that guild died was because Gummy shut down the server.

Long isn't even playing on Netherwing so its not even an issue. I just get tired of how people always blame him for their own short comings and problems. Its just scapegoating. Hes the only reason that any of us here have seen any of the end-game content on private servers, because he is the only person who will stand up and get shit done.
