On an unrelated topic, I've been kicking around an idea in my head for a while:

I was thinking of making a prequel to Uncommon Time. Specifically, I wanted to make a game centered around the previous World Tuners and how the Cantabile family slowly became what they are said to be in UT. It's probably going to be a sequence of vignette where each story has its own game mechanics to keep things interesting.

No idea if anyone would be interested in the game or if I'll ever complete it, but with the fact that we already have 2 sequels (Coda and Pittura Infamante), an alternate ending (Duet), and a remake in the works, it seemed the only way to not retread territory would be to make a prequel.

So one of the rewrites I want to do is regarding the intro sequence. The fact that they went to Harmonia at all without their ensemble assembled to begin with confuses me. I was thinking about saying that the rest returned to Harmonia because they were nobles who got a little green by the journey, or that they were injured from a monster attack. I mean, it just doesn't make sense that the Cantabiles are the only family, that keep up the tradition of raising the chosen performer for the ritual.

I don't get it, that at least one other family from the original ensemble didn't form, that tries to secure a performer for the ensemble through their bloodline.

I would even go so far, as to assume the original ensemble would've been regarded as heroes by the world, so at least one hometown of an original member should be going with the "proud hometown of ensemble member X" shtick and have yearly festivals with competitions, where the best violinist or whatever is chosen by the city, to be used in the occasional world tuning.

So it's either the fuck long timegap since the original tuning (2000 years) where most of the families just died or whatever, or they didn't care in the first place, since the only ensemble member really needed is the fairy rape mutant.

In the story I have planned out so far, I actually have an explanation for this.

The first World Tuner after Arietta is a somewhat hedonistic playboy (I'm thinking a mix of Don Quixote and Denny Crane from Boston Legal) who, over the course of his story, learns how to be responsible and take charge of his life. During the World Tuning, though, he and his fellow band members are nervous and attempt to calm their nerves with alcohol; which causes them to get blackout drunk while they played the Song the Saves the World. It succeeds, despite them having no memory of playing the song, so it is more or less written into the history books that the song is very lenient when it comes to successfully playing the song (my justification for this is the fact that Alto outright states that there have been Tuners who did far worse than her and her ensemble on actually playing the music and still succeeded).

Later the Tuner that came before Alto (which would be the last chapter of the game) goes to perform the World Tuning. This guy hasn't studied bowing heavily and also suffers from manic depression. Due to being in a depressive state at the time he actually fails the World Tuning on his first attempt (though this is later expunged from history at his behest). Because of his failure and his manic state coming in, he practices far beyond what a normal person would endure. He then later succeed at the World Tuning, not realizing it was because he was manic that he succeeded and not because of the extra practice. From this he takes that one has to practice as hard as he did to succeed at the World Tuning. As such, the tradition of practicing till your hands bleed is passed down.

My intention is for every part of the Cantabile family that comes off as completely insane is a tradition that seemed like the right idea at the time.

Out of curiosity, what are some other parts of the Cantabile family that seem off?

So far I have plans for there being no branch families, the shitty tea they force Alto to drink, the enforcement of never letting a trainee have an instrument of their own, the fact that Alto's room is built like a prison, Harmonia refusing to industrialize, and the Cantabile family moving away from Harmonia. If there's anything I've missed please tell me so I can better plan out this project.

In the story I'm planning out, the third World Tuner (Chapter 2) is apart of a very large Cantabile family. A branch family that moved across the ocean to the mainland came to prominence via the combat power afforded to them by the art of Bowing (Nobles are, after all, people who are ultimately responsible for forming an army when the king calls for war). When the story would open up, there's something like a family reunion happening, however one member of the branch family is a literal psychopath who attempts a coup with only the main character making it out alive.

During the final confrontation the psychopath remarks that what she was doing was only natural as it is human nature to try and get to a higher position in life and that so long as there is more than one Cantabile family, there will inevitably be war between the main and branch families. Because of this, the idea of having more than one child becomes taboo in the Cantabile lineage.

The actual music part of the ritual doesn't matter that much, apart from keeping the participants in sync with one another. So long as everyone's in sync, the other four ensemble members are only really there to act as support to keep the strain of the ritual from killing the Cantabile party member. The Cantabile is the only one who needs to perform their part of the Grand Score perfectly, and Alto actually did perform perfectly. She was just leading the ensemble in a ritual to destroy the world, rather than save it.

The sense I got from Alto's and Arietta's lines about the history of the World Tuning in-game is that the World Tuning itself was only meant to be a temporary solution, and the Cantabile family decided to devote themselves entirely to raising heirs capable of performing it when it became clear that the rest of the world was no longer interested in finding a more permanent solution. Given the 200 year gap, I figure that it was probably the first World Tuner after Arietta who made that decision, and then somewhere further down the line, 'Cantabiles need to be raised learning Bowing from an extremely young age so that they're good enough to perform the ritual' became 'Cantabiles need to be trained in bowing until their wrists break multiple times' because mental illness runs in that family and one Cantabile along the line was a shitty parent as a result.

I feel this is far more important than you seem to give it credit for. Alto is stated to have chosen each member of her ensemble for a reason, that reason being they would help them destroy the world. Not only must each member of the team be in sync rhythmically, but they must be in sync with their goals as well. Now I can only assume what your main point is is that a drunk cannot perform the magic of the World Tuning, and you are probably right, but I find it funnier my way.

That is certainly something he comes to grips with which is one of the reasons he gives up his playboy-esque lifestyle (he needs to have a lineage and all that).

I'm actually dropping this concept almost entirely for the majority of generations of Cantabiles. My reasoning for this is that although it is Arietta more or less states that the training was never meant to be particularly intensive. This makes me think that the reason for intense training (especially because there is a 4 generation gap between each Tuning) needs to be for something other than the World Tuning. As such, my idea is that Bowing is a very much in demand magic for the crown. Bowing is non-elemental magic, which means it is magic no one can resist or counter easily, which has to be one of the best things to have when your country is going to war.

That is true, but something about that rang hollow for me. The fact that the grandmother forces it on Alto (and logically the rest of the family) makes me think there's something more to it than just it being the grandmother's favorite drink.

In the story of the game I'm planning, the first Cantabile you play as (whom I named Fortissimo [Opposite of Piano] and will hence forth refer to him as such) has a sidekick that is more or less the straight man of their comedic duo. The straight man in question is his personal butler (or maid [male], I haven't really decided on how much tumblr from the world I want to retain) and he makes a very good tea. Fortissimo rather enjoys this tea and I plan out some banter between them where it is joked that the butler won't give up the secret because without it Fortissimo might get rid of him. Later towards the end of the game the butler will die taking the secrets of the tea to the grave. Fortissimo, during the ending of his chapter, will be seen trying to recreate the tea and failing over and over again much to his anguish. The view will then see his daughter walk in and tell him it tastes good to her (though it's implied she actually hates it). Later when the tea is shown again next chapter it is remarked that it is terrible, but it's a tradition among Cantabiles to drink the awful tea as a sign of solidarity.

Likewise, this is true, but again something about it seems very off. The Cantabile who performs the World Tuning magically summons instruments for her and her entire ensemble to play, so why would a Cantabile need to get used to more than one instrument? Presumably they could summon a copy of their own instrument.

In the story I am planning, this comes during a time when the Cantabile family find themselves impoverished (I'm thinking the 3rd or 5th chapter). The main character is a man who has been away at war only to come home to discover the Cantabile lands have been ransacked and burned. His wife is dead, but his son escaped the carnage. When the call comes to perform the World Tuning, the son is too young to perform it himself, but the son is also old enough to be trained. The thing is, with being unable to afford instruments of his own, the father has to borrow and rent instruments for his son to train with. When the son one day asks why he can't have a violin of his own, the father remarks with the same line Alto's father does. "Because this way you'll be able to play any instrument of any quality at any time." The reality is that the father cannot admit the fact that it's because they simply can't afford to outright purchase a violin. The father is ashamed that he is failing for provide for his son, so much so that he can't even admit to it.

I had a different idea of the end of industrialization, but it was where it was forced upon the population of Harmonia rather than being a choice of the Harmonian citizenry itself. I think your answer fits a lot better than the idea I had.

So, the answer for this that I had already thought up was related to the CCW, but it had more to do with the fact that all of the dead branch families each had territory on the mainland. At the end of Chapter 2, the main character is the last living Cantabile, and therefore would inherit all territory from the mainland. Additionally, the CCW had taught the main character that although industrialization isn't wanted in Harmonia, it won't stop elsewhere. As such, in order to remain competitive with other noble houses, she moved the family's main home to the mainland territory (it's a lot easier to train guards in the newest weaponry if said weaponry is actually available to them, after all).

Again I don't mind what you're doing anon. But random quirks with no deep meaning are also a part of good story telling. It can make a character seem far more real to just have a tic that makes barely any sense, they just do it because that's what they do. I really only draw that line at the tea idea so far, the rest is good.

Seems likely that it could be that old, if not older. Her tumblr page said the first demo of Refinery was released in May of 2014, but it's been in the works since at least February of 2011, going by artwork posted on her pixiv page. And that's for what she estimates to be a 2-3 hour story for the full version.
