Answering my own questions.
>What is the best version of RPG maker?
Tough call, because every single one of them has it's flaws and strong points. 2000 and 2003 definitely had the best overall style, comfiness and RTPs, but lacked the conveniences of the other versions, it also had the overall best UI when it comes to ingame stuff, it also had the best OST. XP was great in many respects, including the ability to script things, though I do not like it's artstyle tht much, and had an amazing amount of different location graphics in it's RTP, for some reason though didn't have tiles for world map. Also introduced the "self-switch" feature if I remember correctly, which was a God send. But it also had an absolutely awful UI both ingame and outside of game and probably the most boring OST. RPG Maker VX had some cool ideas but was overall a mess and VX Ace has the best UI outside of game, a medicore one ingame, has the most "quality of life" features like the quick event creation feature but has a boring as fuck artstyle, an ost that is barely better than the XP one and for some reason, awful resolution for all the games.

Logomancer would probably be a strong contender simply because of it's very cool idea and the fact that I really like the "a shit ton of quests that you do in any order" kind of gameplay. But in the end I would have to say OFF just because I really fucking like meta stuff.

It would probably have to be Witch's House as it actually scared me a bit when I played it, and it was surprisingly creative and kind of fun for a RPG maker game.

I recommend End Roll which is a surprisingly comfy game feeling like a cross between a surreal horror game and a Slice of Life anime. Be warned, it's the depressive kind of comfy.

I played Wadanohara once but I would not recommend it to fucking anyone despite me really liking the game, if you want to play this game, do yourself a favor and cheat. The combat is absolutely awful, even for a RPG maker game, the only thing that your skills do is do more damage. The story is kind of interesting though, if you want to play this game, just increase your level to maximum, and give yourself the best equipment from the start. I have never finished the game due to the shit gameplay.

One of my first and favorite JRPGs I've ever played was a fetish RPG made in RPG Maker. It was a fully fledged game, funnily enough it used a fair amount of stock assets but I didn't mind at all given that it was made over a decade ago and at the time it was a much newer thing for those kinds of games popping up in RPG Maker. It also used them quite well and there was plenty of meaty amounts of content.

Saying it's made with RPGMaker MV (as the devs do) is kinda bullshit. MV has no support for the consoles they're releasing it on, no 3D capabilities, etc. They effectively rewrote the engine nigh-on from the ground up. It's possible, but it will vary in quality depending on what you want to accomplish and what version you want to use. You can make a decent game that will not be painful if you put a lot of effort in, but only if you're using 2003 or 2000 which don't have absolutely dogshit combat systems and awful UI. Those do not allow you for any degree of scripting whatsoever though, unless you do it externally. There were good games made in 2000 and 2003, and surprisingly those versions are probably the ones which have the most good games besides VX Ace. You can make something really good if you put in a lot of effort and actually focus on making an adventure game instead of a typical RPG, but if you use plugins with the VX Ace engine, you can create a game with a surprising amount of polish.

Pretty much all of them are an improvement on the core of the engine. It really depends on what you want your game to do.

If it's your first project, try not to get too big in scope or it can turn into a clusterfuck of feature creep, balance issues and dev fatigue to say the least. Do yourself a favor and make a few throwaway dungeons with no relation to your main idea first. Knowing first hand what the engine does well and what it's limitations are first hand will save you a lot of fucking up down the line.

I've had an urge for RPGM H-games lately. Downloaded enough to keep me busy until I get sick of it.
So far the worst I've played was FlashCycling. Great premise, but poorly executed. The evolution of how far your exhibitionism goes is completely linear (i.e. there is only one "losing your virginity" event before you can have sex with anyone else, one "learn to give titjobs" event before those unlock, etc), and it can only be triggered at a certain place, at a certain point in the plot, usually only at a certain time of day and sometimes only while wearing a certain outfit, and it is a gigantic pain looking for them since if you don't meet the criteria they're completely hidden. In a few cases the event spots don't appear unless you get off your bike, which you otherwise have no incentive to do since the maps are huge compared to the walk speed.
Not to mention that it manages to be grindy despite having neither a battle system nor a resource system well, there is money, but it doesn't matter at all. The entire stat growth is "ride around in circles on the mountain to increase speed and stamina". Which I suppose does fit with the method of finding H scenes being "ride around the entire map fully clothed, then strip and do it again, then wait until nightfall and repeat".
There are plenty of other H games where scenes are hidden behind plot progression, outfits, and time of day, but this game did a terrible job of a) giving a reason for it, and b) making it not feel like a massive waste of time looking for them.

The game followed me as its main character named Lucen. My name is Luke. I thought Lucen sounded more RPGish. Who attended a spell school to learn how to become a mage. So it drew inspiration from things like Illusion of Gaia and Paladin's Quest. Meeting other classmates who were named after my friends and also a crush of mine.
One day, the class goes on a field trip to explore the history of being mages. Teacher (eventual villain) has all of the kids stand at various points, and uses them to complete a ritual, because she's secretly a monster, and used a spell to break a seal that was holding an entire world of monsters back. Two worlds merged and suddenly monsters filled this world.
So it came to these students who were used in the ritual. Except the ritual stole all of their magic (explanation as to why everyone was a level 1 weakling).
Teacher fucks off, and abandons the students in the woods, and it's up to "me" to go through the woods and find the other students, while travelling by foot back towards the school.
The characters were as follows:

By the time everyone was reunited and got back to the school, said teacher ousted the principal and took over the entire institution, to use the school as his personal playground for all kinds of monster spells, while enslaving the students to be hosts for the monsters that are all over the world.
That was about as far as the project went before I lost it all. But the tl;dr was that the new Principal was always going to be the big bad, and I also was intending to write a scene where Lucen and Kana would have sex in the back of an airship. Totally not an allegory to the Volkswagen I was driving at the time.
I also had a bunch of random .mid files for songs I was going to use, like NIN, Marilyn Manson, Tool, The Verve, Matchbox 20 and other shit.

Playing The Last Sovereign. It's pretty damn good so far. Porn game where the MC is a grizzled, no-nonsense, rational, veteran. Went to war with the Incubus King, stalemate was reached, he keeps fighting for 25 more years. Guy gets kinda turned into an Incubus King and now he decides to use the power for the greater good (including making a harem of succubus, bunny girls, and halflings, among others). A lot of far reaching decision making, investing, nation building, and so on.

CBS was just copypasta from other people's games anyways, or if you were feeling adventurous just do a recolor of the menus that took you 10,000 hours on MS paint and call that your CBS to hook anyone into even trying your unfinished demo.
The real mark of praise though was a story that was worth something and of course the technical praise for utilizing the truly hard things to master in RPG Maker, controlling events and actors. This was the secret to cutscenes and allowed for minigames that was otherwise impossible to do.

Not that anon, but I got that feeling with Legion Saga 2 that I tried recently for a few hours. The first hour was okay/interesting enough to tolerate, and then my interest started going off a cliff. Once I got my own castle the game felt too tedious to go through. I'll give credit that they crafted a half-decent world and okay characters for all that shit to take place in though but it just wasn't good enough to retain interest for all the poor things going on in it

We've, with much sorrow for most parties involved, had to switch to unity, since, among other things, Godot's lighting was bugging out (our lead likes to make fugging huge maps), and it doesn't have much in the way of culling. As a plus, I can finally dev on my laptop faster than the speed of smell, and one of our artists is learning how to use unity so he's picking up the slack. Game is actually being made now. Also, it's not a sequel so much as the real version of the game, as RPGMaker had to be extensively extended to do any of the stuff we wanted.

I agree. Outside of LISA I don't think I've seen western art in an RPG maker game. Even though people say it's been overdone, I personally would love to see more medieval european aesthetics done by competent artfags.

If you have a passion project in your head and you really want to make, then just do it. Know however, that you're gonna start from 0 if you haven't honed any skills your idea requires. If you're persistent and practice frequently, you'll get gud within a year or two. I believe you can do it, anon!

Yeah, I know what that's like. I have similar issues. One of the reasons I like forums like this one is that if I fuck up and make myself look like an idiot, I can just post in another thread and move on from the fuckup. I don't have to deal with every single thing I've ever said following me around everywhere I go, unlike other forums. Plus, every forum you join is one more password you have to keep track of, and I'm also really, really bad at coming up with usernames.

It certainly hasn't been overdone in RPG Maker, that's for sure, and I still very much enjoy so-called "generic" fantasy.

Well, part of the problem is that I'm not completely sure what I want to make. I know I'd like to use a high fantasy, high-magic setting. I know what kind of tone I want to have. I have some scattered ideas for characters. I have some ideas for specific kinds of scenes I want to do (and what music I want to play over them), and some character philosophies and motivations I think might be interesting. I'm just not sure how I should combine it all. Although having wrote it all out, it looks like I might have more than I thought I did, so maybe this helped.
I'm like you in the sense that I'm more on the creative side than the technical side, except in my case, that means writing, not drawing. I can't draw to save my life, but I think I'm a pretty decent writer if I know where I want to go with it. I think I have a good imagination, too, and can create some good scenes in my head, but I pretty much always imagine in vignettes, often because I'll hear a piece of music and imagine a scene for it. So like I said before, I'm not sure how to combine everything. Although despite all of this, I do want to have some good gameplay as well, so I've been trying to research the tactical battle systems people have made.
In any case, it's fun to talk about this at least.
