The PS1 is Satan's gift to humanity.
You turn it on and the bootup audio sounds like it's opening a portal to hell and demons are licking at your soul, the only thing stopping you from bolting out of the room is a few chimes to put you at ease. Then the game starts, and whether it's Vagrant Story, Chase the Express, Final Fantasy VII or Chrono Cross the ever present feeling of unease remains. No matter how bright and colourful a PS1 game tries to be, just under the surface there's an almost overbearing sense of dread that you never really learn to tolerate. God help you if it's Tenchu, Kings Field or something equally dark and foreboding you're playing because the feeling of dread is now ten times what it usually is. But still, you can't stop playing. You can't look away, like a gore splattered car crash you can't help but stare, enraptured by it all. There's some magic spell at work here.
When you're playing the PS1 you feel like you could look out the window at any minute and see that 50 years have passed and all you knew is in ruins. It's some spooky ass shit but it's also the greatest console ever made. Nothing before or since has gripped me as hard as the PS1 and its library has for the past 23 years. Please post your favourite PS1 games or memories of playing it.
