It's a good idea in theory for devs who need money in order to account for living expenses and stuff while making the game in question but the problem is that they get too greedy in practice and end up either not working as hard or not working at all.
I think a solution to this is a deadline. That should make it so devs have something to work towards and know how to pace themselves. If they don't make it by the deadline then they lose a significant portion of their money or lose subscribers.
