So i was firmly an Armoured Corefag as a dumb kid but i heard about Front Mission but never knew much about it. Now Left Alive is piquing my interest the series looks like a FFTA style game in some regards and that shit is my jam. But it also looks like we got like a third of the games in the west and one of them is trash.
So how do you into Front Mission? any decent fan translated roms for the jp only releases? certain story heavy games to play first?
Help me expand my library fellow mechafags*
*no /clang/ i don't mean you

Bit of both, more political in a sense of country vs country or mercs vs country. Its interesting but quite heavy in story, i only played 3,4, and 5. Very good games.

Frontline soldiers doing frontline things and politics going on in the background from what I played. The lore is THICC.
4 begins with Krauts falseflagging themselves with blacked ops to start shit, story alternates between a UN-backed R&D unit and a bunch of spics in a south american shithole pulling a Bad Company on El Presidente.
Gun Hazard has you be a not bad enough dude to save the president pulling a one man counter coup with a bunch of fucked over mercs and deserters. Its also the final spiritual Assault Suit Valken sequel.

Each game's story is self contained. 1 has good art but pretty basic otherwise, 2 (gun hazard) while not a SRPG is worth a go, 3 was great by ps1 standards and has two separate story lines that branch off from the start, 4 is a slow burn with serious grounded tone (no battle butler). I've heard 5 is considered the best but you'll need to get the english fan translation.

Gun Hazard is a spinoff, it's not FM2. There is an actual FM2, and the translation was finished somewhat recently.

Front Mission 2 is a SRPG.
Front Mission: Gun Hazard is a different game by a different studio altogether.

Actually for anyone interested don't use the patch I linked in this post, it apparently fucks up some audio in FMVs and doesn't include all the translated text. Instead, somebody from our /m/ posted this in their sharethread

FM2 is the best one. Light on usual JRPG-cliche plot, great tactical maps (reminds me of SNES fire emblem) with changing objectives and enemy reinforcements.

Only played the first one (snes version) with a translation patch, starts out rough but quickly becomes easy to the point there is no challenge. Game's got some pretty sweet music and spritework. Mech customization is ok, if a bit lacking, I think it suffers from classic jrpg syndrom/tropes (as in, you reach a new town and your equipment is already outdated and outshined by current shop, money is easy to obtain, lots of copy pasted parts). DS version comes with a new campaign but I have no idea if they bothered rebalancing the game.

It's a serious fucking shame that it looks like they're focusing on the knockoff MGS gameplay rather than big stompy robot fighting. Looking at gameplay of Evolved it looks like it could be fun, even though it seemed to be just watered down Armored Core. There was a lot that could be improved upon and for fucks sake we need more mecha action games like AC AC6 never ever

Well it does look likes its the start of a mecha resurgence with DaemonXMachina and the rumoured Amoured core. Left Alive does look like trying to fill the Metal Gear void and reading up on it i like the idea that its inspired by a novel spin off that illustrates how fucking one sided a single mech vs footsoldiers is in conflict and it could make for a neat idea where stealth isn't 'hide from the guard' but 'take down this mech than can stomp you into paste using traps and guile' to really illustrate how fucking deadly a mech is when its not two cyberlunks ramming into each other on equal power levels.

It looks cool but I'm not buying a Switch for it. Hopefully it does well so maybe we'll get some knockoffs.

With the translation of FM2, the entire series that's worth playing is in English
FM1 is best on NDS as they give you a second campaign.
FM2 I haven't played yet
FM3 is neat and the story will take an entirely different turn depending on whether you follow your buddy to the warehouse
FM4 is pretty badass. The two storylines it switched between have the interesting quality of making you want to play the story you're not currently in–you'll always want to see what happens next
FM5 is…translated. haven't played it
You can skip FMOnline. It's an mmo
Gun Hazard is a pretty cool sidescroller sidestory
Front Mission Evolved a shit

does the DS version change the art style? i remember disliking a lot of DS remakes of snes games because they went with some questionable art direction changes.

I've only gotten a little over halfway through the original ATV series and I love how many different settings there are. Over like 30 or so episodes we get a cyberpunk-esque megacity, a Mad Max style slave camp, Vietnam war with mechs, and outer space.
