You know that game that looked obviously bad? But you played it anyway just because? Well, it's time to not feel completely useless and share your experience with us, stimulate some folks confirmation bias and confirm /v/'s eternal pessimism.

I'll start, I played pic related:

>Fantastic art in the pixelshit era

>Some impressive animations at some specific parts

>good music I guess

<generic puzzle platformer

<same overused platformer mechanics similar to other indies

<one cool mechanic that was somewhat new was severely underused and never got a good chance to flesh out

<sometimes it's not really clear where you can collide

<no death at any moment, even when you are at serious risk in the "boss" fight

>to be fair the game has some kind of fail state since if you miss your jump you'll fall your whole way and have to start climbing again, but it's not really that punitive

<game steals your control from the character even out of cutscenes and way more frequently that would believe it could

<thanks to this sometimes it's not even clear if you are controlling the character in some sections

<the whole journey doesn't make much sense and I mean this even in artsy terms, at least Kourney was clear cut to where it was getting you to, even if there was no clear "why" to it.

>at least the level design was decent enough to make short goals clear cut even if you have no idea to what kind of endgame you getting to.

<that makes completing the game completely anti-climatical since it's not clear if you achieved anything whatsoever

<short That's an involuntary quality since the game gets boring

>anti-climatical since it's not clear if you achieved anything whatsoever

What, does it release greenhouse gases on completion?

I like the idea of /v/ reviewing games and pointing out all the bullshit in them. So excuse me while I shit out a TL;DR.

>slime rancher

I played it because farming games an autistic collecting of things are my jam, so I figured I could pretend everything except farming smiles or whatever doesn't exist. You get that to some extent, but don't get excited because the game is very shallow. There's no puzzles or thoughtful gameplay or anything, just exploring and collecting slimes/plants along the way.

The game doesn't exactly have any story that you have to sit through, it's mostly in useless emails and pointless text prompts scattered around the world, I only got glimpses at them while trying to figure out if they have anything useful (they don't) and best I can figure some slut has been literally everywhere in the game before you and left notes for you talking about their lesbian romance or something.

You'd expect a game that was in early access to have a shitty half baked ending, but this game baked the greatest shit ending of them all: a literal honest to god dead end with nothing in it except a final text note from that faggot saying they're in love. No special slimes, no special item, nothing.

The character model is the worst character design in all of videogame history, which is doubly retarded because that model doesn't exist anywhere outside the title screen and the home screen where you can read emails. Maybe you can see it in multiplayer or something.

Getting slimes consists of (does not vary per slime type):

1. find new slime

2. suck up as many as you want to have

3. throw them into a cage in your ranch

Farming slimes consists of:

1. periodically move food from a plant you planted into the cage

2. suck up resources from the cage's collector

Planting aforementioned plant consists of:

1. find the food you want

2. suck up one of the items

3. throw it into the farm plot in your ranch

Resources have exactly 2 uses besides selling:

1. feeding one (1) to a slime will instantly turn it into a larger crossbreed between those 2 slime types. It will have both slime's favorite food (which makes feeding them trivial), they'll give both resources when fed, and have both slimes' special properties (e.g. exploding slimes explode randomly).

2. there's some lategame building mechanic where you can spend resources to build teleporters and stuff around the world. Except you have to build 3 different types of drills first and plant them around in order to get special resources that are used exclusively for building those things. It's not interesting by the way, you place the drill, wait 10 minutes, then collect ~3-5 resources and repeat until you get all the shit you want, and it breaks after 1 or 3 cycles depending on drill type. You can't automate it. Oh and you can only place 6 at a time globally.

In lategame because you can also build drones that can move items around… except you can only place 2 of them per area, which equates to feed + collect every time. Not that there's anything else useful to do.

If you REALLY like farming/collecting themes, are willing to put your expectations and standards to the bottom of the ocean, can pretend to be blind every time you go through a menu, aren't easily tempted to read text "just in case", aren't too autistic to leave 2 minigames unfinished, and don't mind that 80% of your brain functions will be resting while playing, you can get an alright simplistic slime collection game out of it. It's kinda fun to find a new slime and try to think of which kind of crossbreed to make out of it, but that's basically the extent of it. The concept has a huge amount of untapped potential, but you'd have to tear down the walls and ceilings of this game to truly fix it.

If you want to give it a try no matter what, here's some tips to ease your pain:

- don't bother reading any dialogue at all, except when you get to a special ranch area with a new quest screen, it explains the minigame. The slime lore tells you if the slime is dangerous, but only quantum/dervish slimes can cause problems.

- the first minigame has 2 plant upgrades; extending the despawn time of fallen food and getting extra harvest. The first one is okay. Didn't play the second minigame enough to reach any rewards. Both also give more farm space but it's NOT worth the grind.

- farming chickens is a waste of your time. If you get a meat eating slime then create a crossbreed with fruit or vegetable diet. There's a guy who wants them for quests though.

- quests as far as I can tell don't give any special rewards nor get more profitable later, except there's some asian looking woman who gives you a second minigame if you complete quests for her.

- the floating medals have no use, you can put them on slimes for decoration but that's it.

- the locked pods have a new teleporter color at best.

- don't expect anything much more interesting than collecting a new slime/plant type.

Also, although there's health in the game, it's basically impossible to die unless you spend time standing in front of dangerous slimes letting them attack you. You can jump into the water aswell. You lose all 4 items in your inventory (no, the space never gets bigger) when you die, and some days pass. Time doesn't do anything except maybe get you more emails?

Dragon's Dogma.

I could tell right off the bat it's trash, but /v/ memed me into playing it.

What a waste of bandwidth it was.

The only advice I took from /v/ was on Mass Effect 1 and I got burned. This was all the way back when it was still new. I don't even understand how it got so popular in the first place. I'm one of those people that reads and collects absolutely everything there is in an RPG and I am very patient with games, but Mass Effect's world was boring me to tears and I couldn't stand it. I would have preferred a generic JRPG over this to be honest. I also somehow managed to fall asleep in the middle of it. This is strange to me because I usually prefer sci-fi settings over fantasy ones. The story was uninspired, characters were wooden, gameplay sucked. I'm not even a graphics whore, but the graphics were an eyesore as well. Oh, and fuck those fucking elevators.

ME

>good story

>shit mechanics

ME2

>unrelated story to main story so its kinda shit

>a lot of improved mechanics (outside of thermal clips debacle)

ME3

>absolutely shit story with no redeeming points

>slightly improved mechanics

>female character has actually her own model

I really can't relate, I don't play vidya to relax, but I hope you find what you want, it's casual game after all, it's not supposed to be stressful.

>>15886552

Not really, Journey is really minimalistic with its mechanics, if I remember well there's like only four possible interactions in journey: Moving, jumping, communicating and "shining". While GRIS, you have a few of your classic platformer mechanics, plus a couple of cool new stuff in specific levels. Also, GRIS involves collecting which branches level design just in the slightest, while Journey is completely linear, if I remember correctly.

I saw the trailer for that game and really liked the aesthetics, but you could see from a mile that the game was going to be more style than substance.

Are there any good looking 2D platformers released recently?

I've taken advice from /v/ a lot of times, and I've been having lots of fun with games like E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy, Descent, The Momodora Series, The Mummy Demastered, The Unreal Series, Underrail, Hollow Knight, Brigador and a lot of Doom/Diablo 2 mods and some Romhacks. Thanks a lot, anons

1f658c  No.15894592

Every tactical RPG in the past 16-17 years. It's like I'm pathologically incapable of learning that the devs who make those games keep putting dumb as fuck mechanics/poorly thought out systems that make their games a frustrating mess to play. "Oh maybe this one will be different, a lot of people say it's good!". It's not, and it isn't.

>Frozen Synapse has enemies spawn randomly on the map

>Banner Saga where if you kill your enemies they win

>Valkyria Chronicles with a single enemy being able to take multiple turns in a row and killing off your characters

>nu X-com with its RNG bullshit missing point blank shots and perma deaths

>Expeditions: Conquistador and Blackguard with their slow as fuck, boring, repetitive combat/enemies

>Fire Emblem with unavoidable crits and perma deaths this has been an ongoing problem since the series' inception
