the pacing was so fucking weird too, you don't get to run around freely for several hours and then the side content isn't nearly as good as yakuza side content and then you hit these weird bumps in the road where a mission will just be driving to a point on the map, watching a cutscene, then driving back which is just padding plain and simple. The combat was really neato though and it did make me think it could be interesting if that studio made a linear action game to stretch their legs with deepening fighting mechanics

Yeah, you only had access to everything by Ch8 (of 11) and only by Ch6 or 7 can you play the freakin' arcade games, something every Yakuza game lets you do right off the bat. Game also takes ages to let you off the leash especially considering how short it is. A lot of chapters are also absurdly short, Ch9 is literally just the boss fight.

Again, could have been a really fun 30-40h game you'd feel like replaying but if you want to do shit like fighting Amon, the game is legit draining. Shame because the core combat is really fun, just needed a few more moves to make up for the lack of weapons and the small amount of Heat actions but the leveling system shits all over it, I quickly found myself several levels above the chapter enemies which affects how quickly you can put them into shock, I had to hold back in boss fights just to have a bit of fun. If they reworked grinding and leveling and put 2 or 3 chapters more and fully-powered Raoh as a epilogue final boss, the game could easily be a 9/10.

The game left me burned out and I'm wondering if I'll get Judgment.

I won't let one little black sheep ruin a series I've adored since I picked up yakuza 1 and 2 in a bargain bin, Judgement should be interesting for sure, the only complaint I have in terms of what I've seen is that some of the heat action animations in it seem really long, this isn't an issue since if you've played these games you'll know how to fight without spamming them but it just seems a bit strange how long some of the animations I've seen are, I think I saw one that was upward of 40 seconds long so i hope the activation for it isn't too simple

I've been playing so many games on my backlog that I didn't have time to play games out this year.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 and Forza Horizon 4, I guess. FH4 isn't nearly as good as FH3, but it's still one of the better arcade racing game series out there right now as sad as that is. The devs seem to still have a lot of fun making it, and it shows in the game, which is surprising at the rate they've been pumping them out. They're gonna have to do something drastic with the formula or take a break though - because that open world shit is wearing dangerously thin.

Yakuza Kiwami 2 is a contender, but partly the same criticism - it's formula is getting stale and I've been binging on the new releases since I missed out on the PS2 and PS3 originals.

Dusk. I'm sure Overload would be here if my PC wasn't shit tier and could run it better. Anyways I feel such joy to be able to play a good FPS again, and this is getting there. It's not doom or blood, but it's getting there. Duskmare is a blast to play through and the jump in quality from Episode 1 to Episode 2 is astounding to be honest. The weapons are excellent and fun to use, the music when it shows itself is pretty fucking good. Occasionally when the game throws you in a big arena and fills it with enemies, it really shines instead of falters because it feels so good to dodge some of the projectiles the enemies throw at you, and your movement in general is pretty much flawless outside of a single move(the dive roll or whatever you call it)

Distance. I'm too much of a sucker for Nitronic rush to not like it so much.

Overload. Again I'm sure if my PC could run it better it would be on the top of this list. For once a remake of an existing game, an FPS no less, that completely improves upon it instead of fucking around with things already solved decades ago. The mere fact that this game is Descent without the vulcan drillers is cause enough for me to give it an outstanding recommendation.

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. Excellent game, but I wish it were harder.

Guacamelee 2. It's a great game with great music and artstyle with some of the best platforming challenges in a metriodvania, but it still has a few issues. First off it doesn't really add much to the existing game outside from a sling point upgrade and the chicken form upgrades, the latter of which I despise. Next, the combat is still ezmodo and it stems from how hitpause heavy it is, it doesn't really flow that well even if you do sick combos(or try to, the health bars on the enemy in this game are either way too long or way too short). There's also the memes and shitty writing getting in the way of gameplay, good god.

Exapunks. I like it but I'm too much of a brainlet to finish it and Shenzhen took it all out of me.

The Messenger. Wish it didn't turn into a metroidvania halfway through because then the game goes from a solid 7.5/10 to a shit tier 3/10 until you get to new areas. It's just a godawful drop in quality for what? A few music note collections? Not worth it.

Super Daryl Deluxe. It was fun, 6.5/10 until that 10/10 ending, but the fact that there are no extra modes, secrets, new game+ or even anything to let you play Super Deluxe for more than just the ending is disappointing. Also too much reliance on fetch quests, and the cooldown period between every skill means the 8 skill upgrade you get halfway through doesn't really add much since you still need to swap pages to have a skill go on cooldown, and swapping in itself has a bit of delay.

The Vagrant, a titty pretty game that I'm enjoying so far but I haven't gotten far into. It seems basic but well made so I'll see most of it through.

La Mulana 2. I didn't really like it as much as I did the first so I quit fairly early. I might give it a shot later.

Doorkickers Action Squad. Pretty meh. Would be fun with a co-op friend but I don't have anyone.

Into the Breach. I like the idea but I never really got far in the game before dropping it.

Frozen Synapse 2/Vigilantes. Haven't really bothered pirating either to see which is actually good. I remember Frozen Synapse 1 leaving a bad taste in my mouth with how random it is(with how you start out with unit placement) and not getting far into it, but the multiplayer was pretty good.

Override mecha something brawl, no idea if the singleplayer is worth it.

Crosscode, I heard it was incomplete on release so I'm waiting a year until hopefully every bit of content promised is there. I'm still waiting on Shovel Knight to this day, and I will plunder them on their release because fuck them.

GOTY: Prey Mooncrash. I know it's a DLC, but it changes the game so radically that I think I have to count it as its own game, despite having similar mechanics. Gone is the slow, search every nook and cranny for secrets way of the base game (though that's good too), now you have to race the clock and use every mechanic at your disposal, because you have 5 different characters and they all have different strengths, weaknesses, and stories. I can't imagine a better use for the already-fun framework that Prey provided. Resourcefulness is always rewarded, and I love that.

Runner Up: Slap City. After the disappointment of Ultimate wore off, I remembered that is still have this wonderful game to fall back to. Fast, fluid, and fun, keeps the character roster tight and easy to balance, and the devs listen to their community, especially the pros. I'm still disappointed that they put in Asha instead of Iji though.

This year was pretty lackluster with most of the highlights being PC or Switch ports. My notes on La-Mulana 2 mostly consist of Mantra combos that need used in specific places, figuring out the Corridor of Blood (which I did way too fucking early; I figured out the rotation shit and 'where' each field was before I went to Frost Giants), the Underworld gate icons, Brahma, and Dark Lord's Footprints. There's also some less important information about which children control which branch, and which number they are.

What could the Yuga Wheels possibly be used for? All they do is, if you put the weight down when the Yuga corresponds to the pictured item, hold off on the spikes until the Yuga 'ends.'

Embed related is the best field theme but like I said, all the tracks are quality

this was my favorite theme, even though it was kind of annoying how much I had to go through Valhalla to traverse the Bloody Corridor. the accordion melody at 40s still gets stuck in my head sometimes.

I have two picks for GOTY this time around, CrossCode and La-Mulana 2. Both are really fucking good.

Runner-ups would be Dusk and Overload. Hope Ion Maiden and Amid Evil turn out at least as good as those two. Also Kenshi and Rimworld.

Honorable mentions go to Lethal League Blaze, Acceleration of Suguri 2, Touhou Makuka Sai, Blazblue xtag and Return of the Obra Dinn.

Also, the soundtracks to Dusk, CrossCode, Lethal League and La-Mulana 2 are all great.

Every thread I've read that discusses favorite games this year have ended up being lukewarm at best. Did any good games actually come out this year?

Frostpunk was my fav for me. It was immersive like I haven't felt before in a sim city type game.
