GOG is one of the least bad places to buy games. The real problem is that publishers want DRM and people don't mind. All that had to be done to stop Steam was for gamers to say NO to Half Life 2 requiring Steam and we never would have ended up in this mess. In fact, gamers should have said NO to any form of copy-protection.
But people don't value their dignity, and this is why we can't have nice things. I'm glad GOG gets even the games they are getting, but as long as people don't stop buying shit that is Defective By Design nothing is going to change. At best we are going to get some scraps from the big publishers two decades later.
But Steam is not just a DRM system, Steam is also an API. GOG Galaxy was not created for the players, it was created as a Steamworks alternative API for developers who have Steam nested so deeply into their code that the games can never be truly DRM-free. This is why for some games there is a Linux version on Steam but not on GOG: there is no GOG Galaxy for Linux and the developers cannot just cut out the Steamworks features from the game without breaking a million things. This is the real problem with Steam, it has mutated from a plague to a cancer.
