Call me a contrarian, but that game was shit and it's story was mediocre, even with the supplemental materials. And supplemental story outside the game doesn't excuse the poor core story in the game. All it had going for it was an interesting hook and being a multimedia experiment.

Tough shit. Anything off to the sides of the great corridor is potentially missable, thereby a complete waste of the thousand man-hours it takes to implement fucking anything in a modern AAA game. You'll meet Yuffie and Vincent when the damn well tell you to. You'll follow the waypoint to your mandetory Ruby Weapon boss battle and you see all of his attacks at least once each in the form of QTEs.

Even though the PC visuals are technically superior, the ultra sharp image combined with the low poly models/textures make everything look really disjointed and artificial, straight in the uncanny valley. Whereas the blurriness of the PS2 version gives the image a much more integrated and organic look. The PC version may be technically better, the PS2 version is subjectively better. (Though you could always just lower the resolution of the pc version and achieve a similar result).
It's just like distortion of audio tube amps. Even though they lower the resolution of the audio, the type of distortion they impart actually reduces the "digititis" of the recordings and makes for a more organic (and for many a more enjoyable) sound.
Same with so many modern movies shot in 4k. Sure visual details in spades. But do you really want to see every zit and pimple on the makeup caked actors faces?

To be fair, we had multi-disc games, because one cd couldn't hold the whole game. Once we got to the ps2, I don't remember ever seeing multi-disc games again.
If SE really is going to release FF7remake in episodes, they'd have to redo the story so that it ends each episode with some sort of climax. >>15874005 wouldn't be too farm from the truth in that case. There would be little to no exploring and players will do things in a set order.

Multidisc games were still around come sixth gen, especially with the Gamecube's minidiscs having less storage room, but with the PS2 they had dropped off considerably compared to the PS1, between storage differences in the three disc mediums the PS2 ran (CD-R, DVD-5, and DVD-9). Most PS2 second discs were just demos or bonus content, but there still a handful that had continuous "please insert disc 2" amounts of content (namely particular JRPGs), perhaps due to two DVD-5s still being cheaper for some companies to use than a single DVD-9, but I can't say for sure. Sakura Wars 5 was an oddity that used two DVD-9s out here, with each disc instead being the same game content but with separate audio and different levels of script accuracy in lieu of chopping out parts of the Japanese audio. By the PS3, they were gone from Sony (until recently), both due to increased storage space on blu-ray to run games from, and disc installs for the ones that had to be compressed (which has sadly prompted a lack of reason for companies to have games run straight from disc anymore). The 360 still had a few multi-disc games, with Lost Odyssey being a whopping four discs (and of which Microsoft couldn't be arsed to make a better multisic case in favor of lengthening the spindle so it can fit all four in the same space).
Though with .hack, if you're still referring to that, I've heard it said each installment of IMOQ had to be padded with a lot of dummy data just to reach a releasable amount of data. If so, stripping that out, it might not be accurate to say IMOQ wouldn't fit on a DVD-9.

Gamecube honestly had a fair amount, but again, that's on account of the smaller individual disc storage size, and even then, some games ported over from other systems like the Dreamcast really could have benefitted from using a multidisc format, compared to having to abridge content or reduce quality in some ways to fit on a single minidisc.

Skies of Arcadia on the Gamecube is a mixed bag. The previously notorious encounter rate got reworked (properly scaled rewards as well, if memory serves, but I could be wrong), and has extra content as well, but the audio does suffer some due to Sega being too cheap for a second disc. But at the very least the pros and cons make it debatable as to which version is better. Same unfortunately can't be said for the PS2 port of Grandia II, but I think that might have been less a storage issue and just an incompetent port job.
As for Evolution Worlds, I might have heard wrong, but I think it was mainly the first game that got cut up, once again a space problem due to trying to fit the second game on the same disc. I have to wonder if the JP version suffered similarly, but I also wouldn't put it past Ubisoft's doing as western publisher.

I'm playing through FFX-2 right now and I don't think current square enix has it in themselves to manufacture a JRPG like it any more. They would cram it full of awful flashy combat like FFXV.
