VtmB was pretty damn good in itself when it came to the atmosphere, but one thing that always stood out for me was Deb of the Night and her show. A wonderful little means to flesh out the entire background story (together with the seemingly insane ranting of Malkavian characters often making lots of sense in hindsight).

Then there's other stuff like the Bar in STALKER where you actually want to hang out and do nothing at all for a moment after spending the last few hours crawling through one of the X-Labs, friendly Poltergeists included.

Or even just outright silly stuff like the Birthday Event in MGS5 or particularly hilarious easter eggs like levels/sections where you can shoot the developers.

They've become a bit a rare sight now that most games follow standardized forms and devs are getting whipped if they build in anything that is not absolutely necessary or can be sold as DLC later on, but I'm still curious - what's the kind of little details that gives you fond memories of a game?

Bonus points if the game in itself was not particularly remarkable.

Metal Gear is filled with that shit, here's a favourite example:

In MGS3 you can:

>Call fire support through the same channel as the guards

>Cancel alert phases via the same thing

>Healing radio frequiencies play music, restore stamina and vibrate the controller

>Every guard has something to say or give if held up

>If a guard is not lying down and you run through his FOV he leaves the hold-up (and calls for alert)

>Shooting out a radio, or all limbs on a body are viable alternatives

>Camouflage and head items have secondary bonuses, making you juggle appropriate camo and beneficial ones

>Food rots over time

>Only way to get empty mags is by magdumpping and properly reloading

>Stun grenades on bosses turn hp damage into stamina damage

>Animal traps are a thing

>Poisonous critters bite and you have to cure it

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE

>The little things that make games memorable:

Samurai Warriors 4, has some pretty cheesy dialogue to all the different heroes, and any combination of them. Really funny, but kinda intended also. The game has super fun extra modes, but some of the story dialogue is horrible. You get the good with the bad.

SW4 is full of little things that make it good.

Play the game.

There's a few little things in games that have stood out to me. They may not be quintessential gems of gaming, but they have a pretty solid place in my heart.

The way Mafia II started out, it began with your usual narrative opening, and then the WW2 segment. It wasn't until the game starts out in Empire Bay in the middle of 1940s winter that it really struck a chord with me. I also happened to torrent the game right in the midst of my winter vacation one year, and it was just the comfiest thing ever. I really enjoyed taking my time with that game, being in that world. For so many things that people hated about that game, I feel like there are so many things that they did right, and its atmosphere was one of them. At least, for that half of the game. The rest of the game was alright, but it's that one particular point of the game that it is comfy to me in all of the right ways.

Pathologic is another that stands out to me. I don't really think too much about horror games, but the way the atmosphere and world were built in that game, I don't think a game has ever given me the true feeling of dread like that game has. Everything from its presentation, to its odd Russian jank, to that feeling of strangling helplessness as time sets in, I've not really had that kind of feeling recreated since, and it's stuck with me for a pretty good while since.

Hotline Miami is another one. The game was fun, but its actual atmosphere stands out to me more than the fucked up gameplay does, largely in part because the whole thing seemed to be delivered through this distorted lens of fringe mentality. Something about that game really set my imagination into overdrive, and I really appreciated the abstraction.

Hotline Miami 1 spoilers

I like how that abused girl becomes your sweetheart in Hotline Miami. The way she gradually falls in love with the man who saved her and starts making his apartment a nicer place to live in. I really liked how the whole romance played out with almost no dialogue. Just visual clues in the small changes she makes to improve your pad after each mission. That was a real nice touch.

Too bad she gets murdered. She deserved far better.

fb9013  No.15815748

>>15815727

The moped was kinda pointless since you had to wear a helmet. Also I felt the bikes were faster than the mopeds for some reason. Another thing I loved was after every mission Jimmy's room was decorated with memories from his quests. The whole time it was a feeling of making memories and enjoying the moment. It's why the villain was puregoodbecause he knew that after leaving Bullworth he would have no friends or any prestige so causing the school to turn on themselves was his weird legacy.

>>15815736

>Can you even shoot flying creatures in Metro like in the King Kong game to attract predators?

No, Metro is Russian Call of Duty with some S.T.A.L.K.E.R influence.

It has some half decent ideas like the bullet economy system but it never goes deep enough, forcing NPCs that handhold the fuck out of you and ruin the atmosphere just completely kills the games for me, when you're alone it's an actually half decent experience, otherwise it's piss poor and obviously a modern console shooter trough and trough praised by hipsters.

You're not even going to see that in Metro Exodus, that shit has Ubisoft Open World all over it.

To this day I still can't believe how detailed King Kong was, along with F.E.A.R and Max Payne it's probably one of the better examples on how to do "cinematic" games right.

Chronicle of the Sword is fantastic and could easily be a full fledged spin off. I'm not sure if it's a Minigame, but it's certainly a side mode. Shame the side mode in SC6 is the "Lets suck off Groh hour"

TXR lives off the little details (as there's only 1 game with good driving physics in the series, and it was mostly butchered for the English release). All the rivals (which can reach up to 600) have their own little back stories. It's a collection of obscure Japanese machines (and some euro cars too). On purely gameplay perspective they're average at best, but they're so charming they're easily 8/10.

Shame I'm almost certain ITC was rushed as shit and we're never getting another one. Especially after Genki did a Temple Run clone TXR game that was japan only and filled with microtransactions for cars then it flopped.

I wasn't the biggest fan of XCOM 2 (older games were better imo), but I enjoyed the poster poser bit in it. Also liked how they called it propaganda, and that you could find your posters on the city walls and shit. It was a small bit that was admittedly kind of dumb, but I enjoyed it.
