It's pretty tricky. Personally I believe that Sigma is the optimal NG experience but only for the first game in the series. NG2 on 360 is much better as the game was made with that system in mind. Also all the gore on that version is uncensored, while the Sigma version is prone to some nasty screen tearing and the gore is censored.

When's that Xbox/PS3 emulator showing up? I really want to give the 3D NGs a go.

Xbox versions have uncensored violence. PS3 versions replace the blood with a ghostly blue light but they have more content. Sigma 2 has three playable Dead or Alive characters (Rachel, Ayane, Momiji) plus Ryu.Think about what is more important for your preferences. Vanilla NG3 is a total clusterfuck, get Razor's Edge for that. NG3:RE is still the weakest of the trilogy but it's at least playable.

Blacks platforming is more responsive than Sigmas and there were also a few other not so great changes that sigma made to black. I used to have a big comparison sheet.

I'd give it a shot but I wouldn't recommend thinking you're in for anything more than a few moments of fun blending in a lot of mediocrity or outright bad.

I played through the Xbox versions for 1 and 2. Never played 3 but I hear that Razor's Edge while not as good as the previous games did take great effort into becoming a better game so if you get 3 you definitely get RE and disregard vanilla 3. As for 1 and 2 just get the Xbox versions if you can. They are seen by most as the superior versions and everything I know about the PS3 versions I would have to agree even despite not playing the PS3 versions. NGS1 from what I know is at least passable enough to be worth owning if its your only option but NGS2 is definitely the gimped version of NG2. It lacks the blood and gore of the Xbox version and it even lacks the higher enemy count of the Xbox version. Enemies also take longer to die which kills a lot of the intended gameplay purpose that Itagaki had for NG2. Both PS3 versions are also regarded as easier.

So in short:

Sadly the asshole who handled the Sigma versions hated Itagaki and in a way wanted to shit on his great work. He had a hate for the blood and gore for whatever the fuck reason. This guy was just a weirdo fucker and his attempt and NGS2 and NG3 vanilla really proved how much of a shit he really was. Anyways before I ramble on too much this probably isn't important to you but I haven't forgotten how this fuck tried to kill NG with his shit ideas.

Xbox versions all the way OP. If you have literally zero choice than I guess you can get PS3 ones but be warned they are definitely the inferior versions.

Ninja gaiden black and ninja gaiden sigma are both acceptable. Ninja Gaiden 2 is good but sigma 2 is very bad. Ninja Gaiden 3 is abysmal but NG3: razors edge is acceptable

I recently got my hands on an xbox360 for free after giving up on the platform when mine bricked years back and of course I booted NG2 up only to drop the replay midway through because I forgot how insane the frame drops could be at times. I assume we haven't got a fucking port because of a licensing issue or god knows what.

NG3:RE still isn’t very good. It mistakes tedium for difficulty. In NG you’d only put yourself against hordes of difficult enemies in optional arenas and there was always some sort of payoff. In RE they just throw waves of enemies at you for the hell of it. The enemies in RE can also break out of your combos seemingly whenever they want and take a ton of hits to kill, whereas they only have to hit you a couple of time to kill you. Then later the game throws multiple bosses at you at once who just have a rediculous amount of health, which in NG a boss never overstayed it’s welcome, in RE it’s more of a test on endurance > skill.

The final boss also has a ton of instakills with no telling signs they are coming.

I didn't hate NG:RE and beat it on everything shy of the final unlockable difficulty but I can't help give it a certain credit for trying to fix NG3s issues, also it has 4 playable characters and the level select mode used for that strips out the exposition sections of the game and the real final boss after the mask making replays a lot more enjoyable

Arguably the best in the series, sigma has a bunch of improvements but it also gets rid of certain puzzle rooms while replacing them with combat encounters.

Really hard game with lots of bullshit enemies, still fun tho, the world is kind of disappointing since it switched from open world to chapter/level based

Don't buy the dlc

Supposedly the fixed version of 3, still kind of meh. The story is deviantart tier, the combat doesn't feel as fluid and most of the bosses are pretty mediocre.

Only play it if you're a big fan of the previous games.

And there's the secret NG game called nioh where you can play against Jin Hayabusa at the end of one of the DLCs
