I've been replaying this series lately, let's have a thread.

>What was your first Castlevania game?

>What is your favorite Castlevania game?

>Least favorite?

>Are you more of a metroidvania or classicvania dude?

>We all know Konami's not going to make anything good again, but what would you wish a new game to be?

dc657e  No.15809323

To answer my own questions

>What was your first Castlevania game?

Circle of the Moon. In Europe it was titled just Castlevania for some fucking reason, so I kinda grew up believing it was the first game.

>What is your favorite Castlevania game?

I'm going to have to go with Portrait of Ruin. Aria of Sorrow is the one I recognize as the best, and I do love it, but Portrait just clicks with me more. It's cheesy as shit but it owns it. I understand anons tend to like Order of Ecclesia more, but it's just so much more shallow than Portrait. What's there is good, but it feels like half the game Portrait is, even in Dracula's castle. Classic illustrations over anime ones are all it has going for it, really.

>Least favorite?

Among the ones I've played, probably Harmony of Dissonance. I remember it as the one I liked the least and replaying it, I see why. It looks and sounds obnoxious. The core gameplay is better than CotM on account of being more fluid, but I just want to hit the mute button, and I hate the palette being mostly gray in more than a few places.

>Are you more of a metroidvania or classicvania dude?

Definitely metroidvania, I've tried getting into classicvania but I just can't. Even Super Castlevania IV is just no fun for me.

>We all know Konami's not going to make anything good again, but what would you wish a new game to be?

Just another iteration of the DS castlevania games, really. At the time it seemed those would come every year, and then it just fucking stopped. Fuck Konami.

Metroidvania but I want Konami to stop trying to make SotN.

A big castle with a sense of exploration. Also, more meaningful weapon variety.

I hate how normalniggers think that the Netflix series is a good adaptation. They haven't even explored the castle.

Circle of the Moon is the greatest this series will ever get. It's the perfect blend of metroidvania and classicvania. The music is superb, the difficulty is ace, the bosses are memorable (especially final form Vlad), castle layout is astounding, the setting and atmosphere is hermhem, and the card system, though broken, was exactly the sort of fresh reform the series needed. CotM is just the greatest, and it's a darn shame that faggot Iga didn't endlessly improve upon and replicate it.

Circle of the moon was my first Castlevania, as stated, and yes, replaying it, it does feel like the metroidvania that feels most like classicvania. I don't think it makes it the best game in the series, but it is still a damn fine game and kind of stands out among the metroidvanias. I also have to agree on the music front - CotM's version of vampire killer is so much better than the original.

Dawn of Sorrow/Mirror of Fate DoS doesn't deserve to be put next to MoF but I really disliked it for some reason.

OP, why the fuck do you always start these threads with a list of questions? All that ends up doing is filling the thread with a bunch of posts answering the questions, while little to no actual discussions take place. Most anons aren't interested in reading every other anon's five to ten answers to a bog-standard list of topics, so most of the thread ends up being glanced over, at best. If you want to kickstart some kind of discussion, you start the thread with one interesting topic, not a damn survey.

>We all know Konami's not going to make anything good again, but what would you wish a new game to be?

I'd be completely fine if Konami just kept outsourcing new games to M2; they know what they're doing and helped the series go out in style after over a decade of Igarashi's Metroid ripoffs.

I don't quite understand why people keep lumping the two together, they are different kinds of games that just happen to share the same universe. CV2, probably but I haven't given it a full playthrough

>Are you more of a metroidvania or classicvania dude?

Classic. Metroidvanias are fun once you have all their movement options, but by the time you do, you never have much to explore, which is where all of the fun is since there's not much in the way of challenge

>We all know Konami's not going to make anything good again, but what would you wish a new game to be?

Something in between a classic and a metroidvania, kind of like what OoE did. A game where approaching Dracula's castle is more of a linear progression where you pick up new abilities as you go, and a complex Castlevania that accounts for you being able to move totally freely from the start and features old axe armor mode.

a4e2b4  No.15815976

>>15815904

All of them, I'd say start with 1 and move onwards, but 1 is really jank and 2 has a lot of issues. 3 and 4 are good starting points, there's a kickass remake of 1 called Chronicles on PS1 too.

If you're going for metroidvanias, SOTN on PS1 is the first and the next one is Circle of the Moon on GBA

ce3096  No.15816021

Is it actually worth it to try and get into the classicvania style games?

I've only ever played a couple Castlevania games and they are the most popular metroidvania Castlevanias (Symphony and Aria), but when I try and play the original on NES or SCIV on SNES or even Rondo, I just get immediately bored with it. It's not frustration from being difficult, it just feels tedious to me.

Was the enjoyment from the classic games the reward of overcoming the difficulty, or was it something else?

Is something important just not clicking with me?

Normalniggers bending over backwards to say its a good show everytime you point a flaw just makes it even more irritating.

>Was the enjoyment from the classic games the reward of overcoming the difficulty, or was it something else?

To me it is overcoming the difficulty by carefully considering every action before you execute it. In the Igavanias getting hit is not really a big deal, the combat is only half the experience. In Classicvania every move you make counts and you quickly learn that you must use your sub-weapons wisely instead of hoarding hearts. You start the game and it wipes the floor with you, but every time you come back you get a bit better at it, you get a better feeling for what makes the game tick and how to beat it. It's sort of like a puzzle game I guess, but the solution to the puzzle in not in your brain, it's in your fingers.

Classic- and Igavania both have very different design and goals. If Classicvania is not your cup of tea, that's OK. I think Egoraptor makes a good point in his Sequelitis video. (I know he's a faggot, but I still think he's right with this one)

Plays similarly to III and does so very well. My main gripe is the balance. You see, for some endings you're required to leave companions behind or kill them for extra skills. This already is making life harder for yourself as you have that fewer life bars to work with. But on top of that, the game is waving in front of your face those permanent upgrades such as max mana and health that you can no longer get alone. The game also has branching paths over the courses similarly to Sonic, and you're gonna be forced to take the longer ones. Dying alone is going to set you significantly further back than losing one of four characters for no adequately explained reason, and takes a life immediately. There's a casual mode thrown in (infinite lives, no knockback) that feels like a copout to the above. Overall plays great with all four characters, plays like a crusty difficulty romhack otherwise.

Bloodlines

A mix between Super Castlevania 4 and Aria of Sorrow. They both represent the pinnacle of each style of Castlevania game, whether that Classicvania or Metroid-like.

Harmony of Dissonance. It's kinda dull really It tries to mix both playstyles and fails pretty badly. That said it's not terrible, but I'm not a fan of it.

Both styles are good in their own ways; Classicvania for rewarding skill via good placement on the screen and quick reflexes and Metroid-like for rewarding exploration, quick dodging reflexes and trying out various combinations of skills.

Something like Muramasa: The Demon Blade; A 2D stylish action game with some RPG mechanics and bonus XP for accomplishments on battle. The average battle would take less than 30 seconds and boss battles, while drawn out, would be epic tests of skill and patter-recognition. Also, it should have jaw-droppingly gorgeous art and amazing music to boot, like in Aria of Sorrow and as I'm thinking about it Muramasa does have a similar plot to that game tbqh form what I've seen of it so far (I haven't finished playing Muramasa, though. I'm like halfway done, so maybe I'm full of shit) Hell, they could make that the 1999 war game. I mean, it's not radically different from what the Metroid-like games already are; it really just adds more meat to the already satisfying game mechanics

But that's not true at all. Levels hardly at all demand their use, and you're usually better off just hoarding hearts until the level boss.

>Ironically i liked the blackwashed Isaac

He is easily the worst thing about the show. After that it is the suicidal Dracula. I wanted Dracula to drain him dry to get to full power instead of this bullshit about Dracula saving his life, having a fist fight with Alucard, and him realizing that his fucking wife probably wouldn't want him to genocide the human race and kill their kid. Devil Forgenigger is just an edgy nigger revenge fantasy.

>What was your first Castlevania game?

I don't remember my first Castlevania game as it was one that I had emulated with the SNES emulator.

>What is your favorite Castlevania game?

I loved Dracula X for the psp as it came with both Rondo and Symphony.

>Least favorite?

I personally never played the DS titles, but I don't care for Castlevania outside of Europe.

>Are you more of a metroidvania or classicvania dude?

I like metroidvania.

>We all know Konami's not going to make anything good again, but what would you wish a new game to be?

There's nowhere left for the series to really go in terms of storytelling. If they did make a new game, I would hope it would be more of a retelling of the first few games like the new Mortal Kombat games are. Add a re mercenaries-esque mode with every character from the series and it would be really nice. They could add in extra costumes and collectable in the mode and it would keep people playing for longer. My one hope is that they wouldn't completely jew it with paid dlc.

>Isaac

I would have been more upset if he wasn't a tranny to begin with. As far as I'm concerned, I really don't care what they do with him. Having said that, I was not pleased with how they portrayed Trevor. He was such a useless cunt for most of the show. I was so ready for him to just murder the minions that got sent after him and I was so ready for them to spend more time in the castle, but they were only there for like 1 episode and then it was over. It was such a waste of potential. The Netflix show spent way too much damn time with the devilforgers and not enough time with Trevor and Alucard. The last half of the episodes should have been them storming the castle at the very least with the last few being their clash with Dracula and the epilogue.

>I would have been more upset if he wasn't a tranny to begin with.

I doubt that. It is less about "ruining" him and more about how the show jacks off to the idea of making "sympathetic villains". All they have accomplished is that they shown that Dracula is sad because humans killed his wife. The entire plot of season 2 doesn't make sense because writers spent too long using cheap tricks to make us feel bad about Dracula and his gay angry pet nigger. Nothing significant was added with all this "character development."

Anyways, people seem to have mixed feeling about OoE but I liked it because it is the most polished of the metroidvania. I wish it had more content and was bigger. I do also like PoR's mechanics and allowing whip-users to change weapons is nice twist. I really don't like DoS's crafting mechanic so its return in Bloodstain Ritual of the Night had me worried.

>how the show jacks off to the idea of making "sympathetic villains"

That got annoying very fast when it seemed to apply to every named villain. The plot was recycled from Rondo and Symphony and used the cast from Castlevania 3 instead with some characters taken from other games as well. I remember reading that they might try and do Symphony for season 3, but that wouldn't make that much sense to me. They'd have to time jump to Richter and you know the forge masters are going to still be there and they're going to hog the spotlight again. Perhaps, that was what was wrong with seasons 1 and 2. Too much time was put on Dracula and specifically his forge masters and not enough time was given to Trevor and his party. We didn't even get Grant. I'd say they should just let Alucard be and go do a faithful Lords of Shadow instead.

Lords of Shadow or Castlvania 64, although I actually kind of like the latter a bit, despite being awkward to play.

Classicvania for sure.

>We all know Konami's not going to make anything good again, but what would you wish a new game to be?

Not really sure, I still have quite a few titles to play overall and haven't thought about it much. In general, I'd simply like something closer to classicvania gameplay, with more focus on platforming, limited / slower movement, and strategic usage of subweapons.

>>15818696

>Least favorite?

>Castlevania: The Adventure. The sequel is god-tier tho.

Really? I just bought a cart of that a few weeks back and I think it's a great game. The music's good, the platforming is challenging, and the level design is great. I kind of wish the rising floor and moving wall segment in level 3 was a little more forgiving, but other than that it's a solid castlevania game. Also, how's the sequel?

That would be stupid seeing how Curse of Darkness comes directly after Castlevania 3. But since they fucked the whole "Hector" stuff, I doubt they'll do that. If something, the world would be better without a season 3.

Hector will have redemption arc which involves him helping Trevor and Sypha. Instead of realizing that helping a vampire wipe out humanity was a shit thing to do, he declares that he should have never listen to Camilla and she isn't worthy of his respect unlike Dracula-sama. Fucking bugmen.

A 2D game that expanded on, fleshed out and refined the ideas of Simon's Quest. Something with multiple castles and villages and a lot of areas in between.
