There is an obsession of "representation" and relating to ever character that it just makes the character writing incredibly weak when catering to these ideals. In a desire to make any protagonist "relatable" and make sure they represent every color of their made up little rainbow you get a burger-king kids club effect, where everyone is represented but none of them have any value, its advertising. In the same stroke during this writing it makes for abysmal villains and conflicts and I sorta blame this on harry-potter upbringing. People worship harry potter for some reason even though its effectively a very light young adult novel that's just good vs bad in a school setting, and the "bad" is comically bad, there are no sympathetic villains or villains who could be interesting or make a reader begrudgingly enjoy their mannerisms because they get hung up on the idea that BAD IS BAD GOOD IS GOOD NO INBETWEEN. To my understanding fairly recently twitter/tumblr had a meltdown over hero academia because a villain(?) in it had more than one dimension to their character and people assumed this was endorsement of the characters actions and lost their minds. It's this close minded view i find so strange, just gating yourself out from exploring any media at all because you don't want your ideals challenged or even to look at other ideals or themes or concepts out of interest. Just read harry potter again, watch another cat video
