Most of my gaming time has been spent playing RPGs but I was getting tired from those. So recently I've tried games from genres I wouldn't have touched with a ten foot pole a few years ago. The results were great - I was having fun again! Wipeout Pure / Pulse, Sid Meier's Pirates, Ninjatown, Puzzle Quest (never thought I'd be so engaged in a Candy Crush-type game). I was thinking of trying one of the so-called rhythm games. Or shmups if you want to recommend something.

Anyway - is widening your horizons a way to avoid the video game burnout? Talk about getting out of your comfort zone. What was your usual gaming genre and what games made you break out of it? Did you enjoy them?

Anon, this place is full of sub 60 iq gay mulattoes, they don't have the attention span to do anything new.

Speaking of which, when is WoW classic coming? I'm so stoked.

It looks like you've answered your own question. Yes, that's a way of avoiding burnout. Ikaruga is a really good entry-level shooter if you're looking for that sort of thing. If you want a damn good puzzle rhythm game, the Lumines games are a blast, and have a decent skill ceiling.

Personally, I've really been wanting to break into grand strategy and 4X games (I've never even played a Civilisation game), but the time investment to learn them seems pretty steep. At some point I'll just have to take the plunge and devote the time like with Dwarf Fortress.

Thanks for the recommendations - putting them on my "to play" list ^_^

Master of Magic is a 4X game that I found really easy to get into. It's not focused on realism and there are no complex research trees, you only research magic spells, so it's pretty easy to digest. The RPG aspects of the game also make it easier to get into if you're coming from that genre.

Yes, too much of anything gets boring

>Talk about getting out of your comfort zone. What was your usual gaming genre and what games made you break out of it? Did you enjoy them?

The Descent games. I'm not really into space ships or FPS, so I have no idea why I bought it, but I am glad I did. These games are fantastic and the modern source port makes them very pleasant to play even today.

I found the interface of MoM to be really awkward. Age of Wonders is similar (though not the same) with a much more modern interface.

MoM's overland interface is slower since you have a smaller view of the map and you can't scroll by just panning the mouse, but that's the only part I dislike about its interface. Its menus are not as stylish as AoW's, but I wouldn't call them awkward.

And yeah, they're not really the same. MoM has much more involved settlement management (more stuff to build, surrounding resources mattering on the output of the city, founding new settlements being a huge part of gameplay instead of only capturing existing ones) and a far greater (and grander) variety of spells.
