Because modern games fucking suck and /vr/ is a graveyard

This thread is for anything 8bit whether it's home computers like the C64, ZX Spectrum, MSX, PC-88 or consoles like Famicom/NES, SEGA (((Mark))) aka Master System, PC Engine and so on.

So what is /v/

I'll start. So I got my hands on a copy of pic related and in all honesty, this is the best Mega Man clone I have ever played. I'd even go that far to say it's better. The customizations are great, the controls are fluid and music is greatnot as good as Mega Man but close.

Isn't the PC Engine half 16-bit?

ad8b78  No.15793865

>>15793848

Yea, it's sort of both. And it has newer models which go up to 21bit plus so called arcade cards for extra ram and other bullshit. But it's an 8bit console nonetheless.

The cpu is 8-bit, but it has a 16-bit video color encoder, and a 16-bit video display controller. Honestly, the games end up looking more like SNES games and it was even released in the 16-bit era and ended up competing with the Genesis and SNES, so it feels more accurate to call it 16-bit to me, but that's just me. Then again, it's also pretty niche so I doubt it'd overtake the thread or anything.

That's the PC Engine CD/Duo or Turbografx 16. I was referring to the base model that only plays HuCards. They also released a limited model Turbografx only in Spain for a short period of time that looks like a Turbografx 16, but didnt have the CD addon.

It's sooo much better than mega man. Funny thing is it was directed by mega man creator Akira Kitamura.

Its graphics are 16bit, yes.

>playan/emulatan

Just beat the original Castlevania trilogy on my NES, feels good and seemed pretty easy now that I'm playing on a CRT with no display lag to fight against. Also Simon's Quest is better than it gets credit for, fuck AVGN.

>considering to buy

I'm looking in to either an MSX or just an MSX2 because I'm a big fan of the original Metal Gear (hell, even the shitty NES version which still has some good game under whatever the fuck the porting team did). I'm sure the only games I can get are in moon but I've been studying lately so I'm up for the challenge.

>controller, keyboard, joystick or arcadestick?

Depends on the game, but mostly controller.

>no one answers these anyways

Just for you anon.

It's definitely less frustrating than Mega Man that's for sure.

>Akira Kitamura

He made Little Samson too which has, in my opinion, the best controls of any NES game, period. It's like a mix between Wonderboy/Mega Man/Ninja Gaiden, but in a good way.

>>15794068

>I'm looking in to either an MSX or just an MSX2

MSX collecting is a rather pricey hobby. And all those filthy gaijins harvesting Japanese 2nd hand shops don't make it better.

>>15794095

It has different versions of Ninja Gaiden, Shinobi and Kenseiden. Then theres Alex the Kidd, Psycho Fox and Zillion from the top out of my head.

Checking out prices online and I can see what you mean, it's not terrible yet but they're not cheap, about as much as you'd expect to pay for a modern console. I wonder if prices are better in nippon?

>>15794133

It's a mixed opinion kind of thing. In the Master Sytem version you can climb which was later added in Ninja Gaiden 2. But its a completely different game than the NES version. I'd say play it and see for yourself.

>>15794144

Hardly. Importing isn't really worth it and if you buy local then it isn't much different since these games are quite rare and it's a retro computer so most people copied floppies. Similar to C64 in Europe.

Are there any good piracy solutions for MSX? I assume it's too niche for a flashcart. I guess if I'd just be stuck finding a way to make floppy discs it would be pretty stupid to even try.

If you have a floppy it's easy to just copy them just [diskcopy a: b:]. Not sure how it works to copy them from different medium(HD, USB or so), but I guess aslong as you have floppy writer thats compatible with modern PC I assume it's quite easy.

Here are some commands for MSX2 for noobs.

I personally prefer 16 bit games, mainly due to the superior gameplay, stability, and more games that support save data. That said I acknowledge that not all games support that feature, but god damn kids today take this shit for granted.

There's an elegant simplicity to 8-bit games. Something like Star Tropics basically pushes that simplicity to its limit and there's a ton to enjoy from that. I love both and growing up with 16-bit games it took me some time to realize what makes 8-bit games worth playing but there's a lot to them that 16-bit games do not quite capture.

Plenty. Excluding arcade ports and Alex Kidd in miracle world because it's god-awful:

Aladdin

Alex Kidd in Shinobi World

Asterix

Castle of Illusion

Donald Duck: Deep Duck Trouble

Donald Duck: The Lucky Dime Caper

Fantasy Zone II

Golden Axe Warrior

Golvellius

Kenseiden

Land of Illusion

Legend of Illusion

Master of Darkness

Ninja Gaiden

Power Strike II

Psycho Fox

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Sonic the Hedgehog Chaos

Spellcaster

Wonder Boy III

Ys

Zillion

>>15794133

Ninja Gaiden is a unique entry with its own levels and story. It's great. If you're emulating it must be played at 50hz though. In fact most SMS games need to be run at 50hz otherwise they're too fast and the audio is borked.
