Just bought GOTY deluxe edition of pic related.
I've only played Skyrim, which I thought was ok but quite shallow. Is this any better? I quite liked Fallout 3 and particularly NV which were made around the same time. What are some "must have" mods I should get?
I read that there's some level scaling and the level up system is retarded so ideally anything that reduces or eliminates these aspects is a plus.

Oblivion basically combines the worst aspects of Morrowind and Skyrim, with absolutely shitty dungeon design and wonderfully repetitive Oblivion realms.
The only thing vaguely interesting about is is Shivering Isles and the quest lines for the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves' Guild.

I liked it better than Skyrim. The quests are better (I prefer it to even Morrowind) and I feel like there's more of that feeling of freedom. I'm a huge fan of Daggerfall too, and this game felt the closest to it. However on the technical side it's more flawed. The weapon selection is piss poor, the level scaling is fucked up, the combat is ruined by damage sponges. Those are my only criticism on this game though. Overall, I like it better than Morrowind and Skyrim on some aspects.

All I know is Morrowind bored the shit out of me and I stopped playing it almost immediately and Skyrim held my interest for a little while until I got bored and stopped playing altogether whereas my experience was completely different with Oblivion.
As soon as I began playing it I was hooked until the end.
I bought and played through all the DLC's along with the main game on disc and bought both Xbox and PC additions of the game.
I'm sure I'll play Skyrim again and eventually finish it at some point but it just doesn't call to me like Oblivion did.
Oblivion was simply a beautiful game with arguably the most beautiful environments of all Elder Scrolls games ie great epic church/temple like buildings and homes and areas of autumn themed wilderness with red leaved trees, etc.

Only things Skyrim's got going for it over Morrowind are that you don't know trapped chests are trapped just by putting your crosshairs over them, you actually have to examine them and find the trap. Shame the game doesn't do more with traps. That, and Destruction magic's more than just pewpewpew projectiles with a different model; you start with a magic flame/shock/icethrower only good for midrange, then a standard projectile, then projectile+aoe explosive, and also the runes… It's a shame the runes A) Suck in terms of damage B) Inherently suck because most of the time in this game, you're infiltrating a dungeon, not defending one from intruders, and it's the latter that would make runes the most useful. Not unlike proximity mines & such in the Fallouts.

The quests are actually somewhat engaging and the modding scene has been going at things for a lot longer. The ones still modding are some of the most dedicated autismos you'll ever see and its possible to make oblivion into a really fun experience with extensive modding. Modding it just also happens to be immensely more complicated than skyrim

The sound design is extreme bad as well. When you hit the 10000000000000000hp Ogre with your 12 damage sword its an infinite "ching-chung-ching-chung-ching-chung". Everything about the presentation is nausea inducing. The gameplay is honest to god worse than Skyrim's and thats a fucking achievement. There are some interestingly written quest but it all get bogged down NPC interactions. The dialogue is dogshit and the horrible voice acting, faces and animation make it seem even worse. Not to mention the radiant AI meme makes them feel even more artificial.
Dungeons are almost no better than Skyrim's, only difference is that its not a loop and you get 2 extra from the main path at best.
Oblivion's main theme was alright but everything else(ESPECIALLY THAT GOD DAMN FUCKING GENERIC BATTLE THEME AND NONE COMBAT OBLIVION GAME THEME) fucking sucks dick. Oblivion's music is one of the worse in the series. Skyrim and Daggerfall had the best music and I will fight you to the death on this opinion.

Even in gameplay it's better. Skyrim's core combat mechanics are just complete fucking trash unless you're playing sword and board. Magic manages to be both OP and boring as shit, archery is as boring as it's always been, and the hand system fucks any attempt to play a hybrid character in the ass. Oblivion had a dedicated cast button for magic which let you use spells even with your hands full. This was one of its genuine improvements over Morrowind, and Bethesda dropped it. This happened in several other ways too–NPC behavior is a lot less complex in Skyrim (people give Oblivion shit for its AI but it was a clear improvement over Morrowind where NPCs just stayed in the same place all the time), traveling NPCs are simulated with a random encounter system rather than actually moving across the map which occasionally results in NPCs that are going the opposite direction from the place they're supposedly traveling to.

Around GoodSprings there is the road with a warning sign that lead to red rock canyon. The road to quarry junction where a dude tells you you will get sodomized if you continues. Go to the Nexus, download Oblivion Character Overhaul V2, DarNified UI and the Unoffical patch. These are basic requirements for playing the game on PC. Youll still get a very vanilla experience in terms of gameplay, but without the glaring flaws of monster mash NPCS, a retarded UI and literally hundreds of bugs bethesda never bothered their lazy arses fixing.
Now, if you dont give a shit about the vanilla experience(and you shouldnt btw, vanilla oblivion is shit), you can spice things up with pretty minimum effort with the following mods.
Martigens Monster Mod -Adds some odd 500+ new enemy types, new enemy factions that interact in different ways, new ingredients and pelts, a rudimentary arrow and armor crafting system and loads of other shit.
Francescos Mod - More new monsters plus new armors, weapons and other loot
Cobl - Adds loads of new ingredients, lore books and other stuff, all based on stuff that was in prior TES games.
Supreme Magica - Makes magic not shit.
Unique Landscapes - Makes the environments not shit
Better Cities - Does what it says on the tin
Immersive Weapons - Adds a few hundred new weapons, distributes them randomly throughout the world on NPCs and traders like weapons appear in the vanilla game.

Assuming you don't have buyer's remorse or at least learn how to refund then torrent, install Nehrim. It's a complete overhaul mod that makes Oblivion into an almost good game. I played the base game around release. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. Just okay.
