I'm a grown man anon, I don't get things for Christmas, but I love Christmas all the same, I love Yuletide, I love the whole season. I love the music, the lights, the fire in the fireplace, seeing family, talking about Christmases of old. Christmas to me represents more than presents, it represents more than even a Christian holiday, to me Christmas, and Yuletide, and all the related traditions, are just one big celebration of western culture. I hope someday Christmas can bring more and more people together. Happy whatever winter holiday you lads have

I think about this kind of stuff a lot, actually.

I've always wanted my parents to play games with me, but they never really did. My Dad would just play my SNES when I wasn't home or around.

If my Dad were still alive, I'd probably gift him Starfox. Since that's the game he really seemed to like playing most, was one of the few games he had any interest in playing.

My Mom used to really be into Rollercoaster Tycoon about 15 years ago; but her body, sight and overall condition have deteriorated to the point that she can't really much of anything in the way that she used to. I gifted it to her last year, it made her happy, even if we both knew that the packaging would never be opened.

My grandfather is still alive and in good health, but he's swiftly approaching 80 years old. He grew up on westerns and stuff, and I think gifting him either of the RDR games would be nice, but can't really justify purchasing a console just for one game.

Mom has zero interest in playing any sort of game, and dad's a literal boomer whose only interest in vidya are old Atari games and GTAV/The Last of Us (he got a PS4 explicitly and only for the latter). That's it, and there's honestly no way I'll be able to instill any sort of good taste in him at this point. Honestly, best thing vidya related I could do for them, if I felt like it, would be to import an OST for a series I love for my mom, as she's at least able to appreciate music from vidya (and even anime) in my experiences in the past, and her surprise at finding that such composers for soundtracks she like are Japanese is amusing (she seems shocked they'd put that much effort into it). But no, the only vidya I drop money on are predominantly cheap older games for myself or a friend. I don't think anyone else in my extended family even plays vidya.

My mom would be okay with most Nintendo stuff, as she's always liked them. She beat SMB and SMB2 (the American version) for my sister because the latter was a little kid at the time. My dad played OoT and MM to completion when I was a kid. I was too impatient and always did the main quest while occasionally finding side shit and he always ragged on me for it. He also owned tons of shitters in Quake and later Halo PC. But he replaced vidya with bicycling when he got diabetes. I'm in my late 20s.

For my mom, she doesn't play too many games if shitty mobile games don't count. Last year I gave her my modded 2DS, and she's enjoyed that a lot by playing Pokemon and such with us.

My step dad is an odd case. I can never tell what he will like. He generally sways towards jrpgs though, which is strange because it would never seem to be something he would like. I kinda want to get him Nier: Automata or maybe branch out with something like Disgaea. He also likes Metroidvanias and was liking The Mummy I got for my switch some time ago. What he really wants is a laptop to play some games on and so he can play on his RC sim, as well as actually have a computer to do things on.

I'm honestly curious as to how far down the hole he is that you'd consider getting him into Disgaea at whatever age he's at.

He turned forty this year. What generally happens is I get a game on something, and I give him access to all those games whenever he wants. I use to be careful with some of the weeb games, but when he beat all the Shantae games and some of the random jrpgs, I just started to experiment with what he likes.

Interesting. I assume by give access, you mean what's available digitally, or do you let him borrow actual copies of stuff? Kind of wondering just how limited the library he effectively has to pick from is, considering not everything worthwhile gets given a rerelease.

It's mostly digital because of the ease of sharing, but I have given him disks and cartridges, as well as set up things like Raspberry Pis with plenty of ROMs. He does get games for himself too, mostly for his Switch because of the portability, and he used to get games for his laptop before it shit itself, but because he knows I get games we generally both like, he takes full advantage of it, which is fine by me because it's something we like to talk about.

I take it you've taught him to pirate, or do you have to be the one to bring him stuff to emulate/use with loaders? Just thinking that would probably be easier, quicker, and cheaper on both of you in the long run.

If you think he's fine with something weird, since he likes JRPGs, look into getting him into Shadow Hearts if he hasn't already, assuming sixth gen isn't somehow "too old" by his standards. Probably worth noting though that the series chronology goes back to Koudelka on the PS1, and as a whole four game series, it is kind of getting up there in price.

Good to hear. My dad certainly is a "muh grafix" sort, with the exception for atari games he grew up with, and from when I used to show mom what I'd play, she never really liked what she'd see. Either it was too "adult", "too kiddy", or "too outdated." All within the same series, no less.

>I'll look into those games. I haven't heard of them somehow, but I'm interested.

Historical fiction JRPG series with varying ratios of dark to quirk (more in favor of the latter as it went on), with a neat take on turn based combat due to the Judgment Ring system (in the PS2 entries anyhow), and a rather out there, at times morbid sense of humor. Started as a gothic horror game with RPG and lite-tactical elements on the PS1, before settling into a JPRG series with horror designs. I found them all quite enjoyable, but I suppose they're not for everyone, and even fans are divided on which are good or not.

Loved sitting next to his computer watching him play BG and BG2 for hours on end, asking him what a Medusa was every half-hour or so. That fight looked like a bitch in hindsight.

Too bad he's a drug addled deadbeat dating another drug addict with three kids now.

I know that for some of you what happened to me it's nothing and thinking back on it, it seems rather trivial but I've rarely gotten caught in so much shit in so little time but I guess you either win or you learn.

Enjoy christmas with us Anon, the only one keeping you from enjoying it with your friends here is yourself.

Get some hot cocoa and snacks stocked up, get a new game and hold off to play it, and check in here to get some multiplayer games going.

Hell if y'all want I know a fuckload of christmas cookie recipes since it's a family tradition to make like 30 different kinds to hand out to neighbors. Since my shitbag neighbors threw the ones I baked last year out I'd be happy to spread the knowledge just to keep the spirit of that going. Also know some relatively easy proper recipes for a christmas dinner, even alone worst case scenario you'll have some leftovers or hand it out to neighbors and be that guy who cooks all the good shit.

Also go get some tree analog. Like a shitty desktop mini tree or wall sticker thing, hell even a background would do.

I'd gift my dad a good Quake game or a remaster. We used to play those a lot when I was younger.

Too bad they don't exist and he's wisely decided to stop playing video games

I used to get my dad handheld games all the time so he could play them at work or the hospital simple ones like mario cart were best

him being a union crane operator he had a lot of time waiting for other people to get ready for him

I tried to get him into PC games once or twice, but it never took. when he tried portal 2 it was just like that ijustine webm, he even got stuck in the same place as in the webm

Unfortunately working in a union all your life will do that to you. There's no room for thought, just follow all the rules like everyone else.
