It's a retelling of Final, recut into 12 TV-length episodes. In order to fill in extra time, they added in footage from the GGG TV series, and also animated a few new scenes that are mostly about Betterman Lamia hanging around in the background and watching things go down. It doesn't add much to the story, but is probably worth watching if you're going to move on from there to the Genesic GaoGaiGar vs Betterman web novel or manga.
But like I said, you will also want to watch Betterman if you haven't seen it already.

I haven't read more than a couple of chapters of the web novel, but what I did read was at least decent. It's all about Mamoru and Kaidou stepping up to protect Earth as dual pilots of the King of Braves GaoGaiGou after the end of Final. And the big villain is Genesic.
It was also popular enough to get a manga adaptation that's currently only two chapters in. Pics related.

The way I see it, Woo and the kids were just terrible and got what they deserved. Mihail and Fasalina are basically Jonestown cultists who were so desperate to believe that they let themselves get drunk on the Kool-Aid to the point of no return. Gadved seemed to be the only one to join not for any personal gain, and while he clearly was believing enough to follow along, he also was awake enough to be doubtful and conscious about what was going on around him.

Which is a shame. I love the old Toei Getter and Mazinger. Besides, never thought they are too old. I mean, sure Akira Kamiya (the voice of Classic Ryoma) is retired….save for probably that City Hunter movie but classic Kouji's VA is still around (he was in Infinity…but not as Kouji, which is a damn shame) but hell, SRW used stock voices for certain characters in a while. From what I remember, (((Hollywood))) has long been interested in a live action film. Just because the actual fans aren't vocal for it, it unfortunately doesn't keep producers from wanting to take it to take it to a new medium. Alpha 1 has a fan translation that's Never Ever tier at this point. It is being worked on but i would not expect it to ever really finish unless some one else steps up to the plate to get the editing done. Alpha 2 is actually coming along well, the translation and editing there is being done by the girl who did Alpha Gaiden and the official translation for SRW X. No one is working on Alpha 3 as far as im aware yet.

That was from V, it gets some what better in X, is a sort of odd process. MD was quite bad in that it was basically a google translate, V was better as some care was taken to properly translate it and edit it but it does have the very occasional oddity like the 'weeaboo' line, X is mostly all on point except again for a few oddities like Masaki saying "get wrecked" as one of his battle quotes.

Series calls Endless Illusion a place "at the bottom of the universe" if memory serves, so I'd say that even if that's metaphor, it's likely a substantial distance from Earth, as as canon goes, can't be part of the same solar system. At the same time though, it would have to be within distance of having been able to be reached to begin with, given it's usage as an Australia-tier dumping ground for Earth convicts in what backstory we do get.

Don't know about the WZ predates the 78-2 (and as a guy who loved the Alpha series for weaving everything together, that's kinda dumb) but it feels like it tied everything together like how in Alpha 1, GilGilGan (a monster from the Toei Super Robot crossover movies) is actually a modified Space Creature (from Gunbuster) made by the Aerogaters or how the Zanscare and the Crossbone Vanguard (F91 version) form the Jupiter Empire and since the Muge Empire hasn't appeared yet, Shapiro from Dancouga joined the Jupiter Empire instead.
Only hiccup of the Alpha series? Ramrodding SEED in. So for the past 3 games, the Federation guys wear the UC brown uniform…suddenly, surprise surprise, the CE white uniform pops up (even worse if you played Touma's story and he encountered a soldier in the UC uniform earlier on or how suddenly ZAFT is there, no explanation)
