Instead of calling them "open world" games or sandbox games, why not call them blandboxes instead? This is a simple, easy to understand term that sums up many of the gripes most of us have with sandbox games. With enough usage, it may also spill into other forums to help normalfags realize that the type of games addressed does not have any good gameplay or world design.

With that out of the way, can you think of any open world/sandbox games that do not fit the description? I'm quite fond of the Gothic series, which has dense maps and meaningful interactions. With these features, it is almost antithetical to the industry standard of copypasted maps with repeatable chores.

Embed related sums up many of my feelings about open worlds in general and the Gothic series, although I'd dispute the argument that Gothic is a synthesis of the ideas in Oblivion and FFXV and the rambling about "muh interesting game idea" at the end is shit and unrealistic to realize.

Of what genre? Non-sandbox games with all the other features of the given game? That's just pure conjecture, I could give you examples where it's not true and you could give examples where it is true, it's a stupid point to make.

>level design nonexistent

Not necessarily true, it's just that it's not linearly designed. Do you really think that Hitman games have no level design?

<you can't dick around in non-sandbox games

Now that is factually true since it's basically the definition of a non-sandbox game.

Do you really think the Hitman games qualify as sandbox games? By that logic Thief would be a sandbox game.

So because you can exploit the game mechanics to skip parts of the game and have fun, the Metroid series consists of sandbox games?

You're both extremely retarded niggers with no hope for acceptable taste. Sandboxes are defined by the number of systems you can interact with and how deep they are. Ubisoft Asscreed-esque games are the bottom of the barrel because they are glorified collectathons with drawn out levels and no good platforming mechanics like classic collectathons had. On the other hand, you have games like Dwarf Fortress (despite the UI) and Gothic, as mentioned in the OP. Hell, Gothic isn't even particularly deep with its systems; it rides its way to goodness on good quests, characters and dialog alone, kind of like Witcher 3 did.

bce508  No.15729464

You always have a multitude of options, any method of completing the objectives is perfectly valid, and while scoring (which is already outside the game) does largely promote the relatively few methods of doing Silent Assassin, there are special perks that you can get by mass murdering everyone, ie. Sushi Chef. If you want to specifically go for the definition that sandboxes must be pure open world, there's still obvious level design in a large portion of these games, some open worlds are completely handmade.

>So because you can exploit the game mechanics

You yourself say that you are exploiting the game mechanics and it's not a game feature, the game is designed to be played linearly, completing objectives in few, very specific pre-defined ways.

I agree that actual sandboxes like df are a lot of fun to play and not bad games by any means. However, the term "sandbox game" has been corrupted to describe bland, static GTA like games consisting of subpar missions and side activites.

Sadly, Red Dead games would be good sandboxes if Rockstar wasn't so adamant about penalizing the fuck out of you for trying to have fun outside of the prescribed boundaries. The new one is a little better from what I've seen because there's way more opportunities for stealing shit, but still leaves a little something to be desired for overarching gameplay systems.

Make your own fun, its easier when you're a kid with an imagination I guess. The amount of fun I could have with an action figure alone or a couple of green army men was ridiculous. I remember dressing CJ up as a biker and going on road trips around los santos, stopping into towns and gas stations. You best stick to linear games if you can't make your own fun stories.

You can get away with a lot of shit if wear a bandana and leave the area quickly enough. The only problem is that train robberies are bugged and that saint denis is too strict with the law. Robbery is pretty pointless though from a monetary perspective since there is nothing to spend your money on and you get a shit tonne of money from just doing missions.

000000  No.15729522

>>15729464

In Hitman, you usually have a singular objective to complete in each level and transition between levels upon completion. I would call that open/open ended level design, not an open world/sandbox. Again, do you consider Thief a sandbox game?

>You yourself say that you are exploiting the game mechanics and it's not a game feature,

exploiting the game mechanics != exploiting the game. Most of the mechanics of Metroid were intentionally carried over between titles, knowing they existed.

>the game is designed to be played linearly, completing objectives in few, very specific pre-defined ways.

Again, I would call that open level design.

>and you get a shit tonne of money from just doing missions.

Indeed. That's the other issue, the story missions totally undermine the sandbox aspects of the game. That's why everyone who buys them always looks forward to the online part, because Rockstar actually tries to design them as sandboxes. But muh high production value story is just too important. I guess I'm not one to argue, looking at their sales figures; they're definitely going to keep doing it now.

Hitman has managed to redeem itself from the dumpster fire that was absolution. The "story" missions in each map act like a tutorial/tour of the map, but some are misled to think that's what you're "supposed to do". The only bad thing about the new hitman games is the built in wallhack "instinct mechanic". At least master difficult you get raped by any NPC that looks in your general direction so you gotta stealth properly.

There is sometimes intelligent discourse on /v/ when the usual riffraff leaves the thread. Of course, Mark and his hotpocket team may come in to ruin the fun because of le rule 8 but the point is that intelligent discourse certainly isn't impossible here.

Hell, I've even seen it on /tv/. I think the reason being there are a lot of displaced /pol/acks ever since /pol/ went downhill due to the roach and then subsequently due to the porchmonkey raping /pol/ even more. These posters flee to /tv/ and God knows where else because it's one of the few places that allows true freedom of speech, just as long as the thread isn't a blatant shitpost. I've never been on our version of /b/ but I hear it's even less free than /tv/.

Anyway, all I've got to say is that you shouldn't shy away from discourse here on /v/ that simply goes on a bit of a tangent and becomes less strictly video games related. That's how the flow of discussion works in real life, too. Obviously, the thread should start on-topic, but who cares if the discussion naturally digresses into something somewhat tertiary? What's the alternative? Nuking 3 quarters of the posts in a thread and telling those banned to >>>/(relevant board/? That's just boring and nonsensical. Even 4chan towards the end of its lifespan had more freedom than that.

Every open world game always felt very lacking to me compared to titles with dedicated level design and clear gameplay mechanics.

Take Skyrim and Oblivion which had these massive budgets to them and put them next to something like Dark Messiah which had a fraction of that amount.

The core, which will take up most of your time is the same – you fight monsters in both and the game is in first person, but they are so far apart in environment and combat quality it is stunning.

I see no point in walking around an empty open world and interacting with irrelevant NPCs while having to deal with subpar combat and dull levels.

It's useless to give the player the freedom to roam around wherever he wants while not making it meaningful to do so.

Open world games desperately need actual mechanics instead of the "you can do anything" mantra which rings hollow.

>>15730243
