I remember playing giant melee with mushrooms only and play "Super Giant Melee". I played with the modes and item options in melee to make my own little games. Melee may have been overrated and has much less characters than its successors, but it had enough content and modes to keep me amused for a long while. If anything, SSBU might get rid of modes to make room for all the characters and stages they add.

I think this perfectly describes both Smash 4 and what will become of Ultimate. It's so weird that they did it so well the second game and then progressively forgot more and more what made it special.
Also there's an over reliance on nostalgia, I applaud the decision of making Piranha Plant playable, not because of the character, but because they had to become inventive with the moveset (so they serve a purpose) as opposed to just copy and pasting the moves from their original games. Remember, Cpt. Falcon and Fox were made from scratch and served a purpose as two different playstyles, characters like Olimar are crutched by the fact that they need to keep the Pikmin from his franchise but they don't know how to balance them without having RNG or monolithic choices.
Clones from different games would be a welcome return as well, not the Mario->Dr. Mario kind but the Cpt Falcon->Ganondorf type. I realize it's like only two character that do this, but I would be so much happier if they added reps like Captain Rainbow as another Cpt Falcon clone with some different moves, or Dr Eggman as a souped up version of Bowser Jr.

There's nothing weird about it. Sakurai is just an insufferable prick who cares more about his pride than actually making a good game. Look at how his earlier interviews in regards to Brawl were him going on about how Smash is a serious attempt at an alternative fighting series, and then shift tones to where he keeps shitting on Melee, going on and on about "Muh accessibility", and even now trying to say that Smash was always developed as a "party game".

Sakurai's problem is that people didn't praise to high heavens how good Brawl is, and now he's set out to spite anyone that ever liked the series. Hell, it's been rumored that he made Brawl "easier" because he got his ass handed to him by an NoA employee while playing Melee. There's another rumor floating about that he made the game "easier" to accommodate the Wiimote, which is an even bigger joke since Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is considered to be the best Capcom Vs. gamer made to date. Also, that's leaving out how Sakurai has been saying that he's done with the Smash series ever since he had to sell his soul to develop Melee in under a year.
