The PS1 had an assload of worthwhile games in general. Really depends on how deep you want to go into it and what all you like genre/playstylewise, and of course, if you're just talking pirating or actually buying copies. Because I could easily recommend playing something like Tales of Eternia ("Tales of Destiny II" in NA) if one likes JRPGs because it holds up pretty damn well on most fronts, but I wouldn't do the same for actually buying it when it averages $120.

Considering you seem to know a bit about moon games, was the original Japanese version of Gunner's Heaven better received than the PAL western one ("Rapid Reload," which NA never saw)? Or was it considered kind of middling there too? Asking since I remember hearing something that the reduction from 60 mHz to 50 mHz wasn't accounted for in the porting process, which makes me wonder if, removing that facet, it was considered good in Japan.

Players and publications felt it was a lesser run & gun style game in comparison to more popular ones like Contra. I think time has done it some favors as at the time publications had the opportunity to recommend alternatives to it. Today there is a drought of games that fill that niche and if you've played the more popular titles in the genre like Gunstar Heroes, Metal Slug and Contra, you'll definitely find something to enjoy here. I don't think it hits the high marks of those and it does come off as a bit of an imitation of Gunstar, but Gunners Heaven is a fun game with plenty of unique qualities to it like the grappling hook swing which does add a unique flow to the combat.

The Japanese original is of course better and thankfully you don't need to speak a word of it.

As in it doesn't have a plot anyhow, or that as a run and gun you don't need to understand what's going on to enjoy it? Kind of makes me wonder if a script rip would be possible (assuming the PAL script is even good), but perhaps that's just plain unnecessary.

Wait, the Japanese dub is deadpan, or are you talking the English one? Because I'd think it's possible to rip the script without English dubbing. Though I can't really say if the script would be accurate to what's being said in Japanese.
